SYSTEM
The term system is derived from the Greek word systema, which means an organized relationship among functioning units or component. A system exists because it is designed to achieve one or more objectives. We come into daily contact with the transportation system, the telephone system, the accounting system, the production system the computer system, etc. similarly, we talk of business system and of the organization as a system consisting of interrelated departments such as marketing, finance, production, sales, accounts, etc.

INFORMATION SYSTEM
An Information system is an organized combination of people, hardware, software, communications networks, and data resources that collects, transforms, and disseminates information in an organization. People have relied on information system to communicate with each other using a variety of physical devices, information processing instructions, communications channels, and stored data since the dawn of civilization.

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

MIS is one of the five major computer based information systems. Its purpose is to meet the general information needs of all the managers in the firm or in some organizational subunit of the firm. Subunits can be based on functional areas or management levels. MIS provides information to the users in the form of reports and output form of reports and output from simulation by mathematical models. The report and model output can be provided in a tubular or graphic form.

PRODUCTION INFORMATION SYSTEM

Production information system provides information on production activities of an organization and thus facilitates the decision making process of production managers of an organization. Production is another important functional area of an organization that is engaged in producing goods from raw materials. It is clear that production is not an activity for every organization selling goods. Production is the process of transforming the raw material into finished goods.

SOURCES OF DATA FOR PRODUCTION INFORMATION SYSTEM I. II. III. IV. V. Production data:
scrap, etc. it includes production orders, assembly orders, finished items,

Inventory data: it includes data on inventories of raw materials, goods in process

and finished goods.

Supplier data: provides information about the sources of raw materials. Now days,
maintaining this type of data is the responsibility of materials manager.

Work force data: includes data about the labour market, performance of workers,
etc. This type of data is essential for production scheduling and plant utilization.

Environmental data: it includes data on technology trends, raw material, prices,

labour force economics and dynamics. This helps the production manager in better planning and control of activities of production processes.

MAIN DECISIONS TO BE TAKEN IN PRODUCTION SYSTEM I. Product design: product design is also known as product engineering,
includes the entire development of the product through all initial stages until actual production starts. Preparation of drawings, specifications, experimental and development efforts are the activities involved in the product design. Now a days computer aided design and computer aided engineering approached are used in product design.

II.

Plant location and layout:

plant location determines the establishment of an organization at a particular place. It is an important decision because location of plant partially determines operating and capital cost, each prospective location implies a new allocation of capacity to respective market area. Plant layout is the method of arranging machines, equipment, and other services within a pre-designed building, enduring steady, smooth and economical flow of material. Just like plant location is also a continuous process as there is always scope for making improvements over the existing design. Plant layout designs are prepared by using mathematical and simulation models, for which computer play an important role. The layout software may be used to prepare altogether a new plant or to improve upon a specified one.

III.

Production planning and control:

this function is responsible for planning, directing and controlling of the material supply and other production processing activities. Production planning prepares procurement plans for materials and personnel, establishes inventory control procedures, and prepares work authorization.

The task of production planning is accomplished through: a. Routing: this is determination of path over which each piece is to travel
in the process of transformation of raw materials into the finished product. b. Scheduling: it is about deciding when each operation in production process is to be carried out. c. Loading: it is known when a particular machine will be available for work on each order or item.

Production control is a procedure to regulate an orderly flow of material and

co-ordinate various production operations so as to ensure that the desired items are produced in the right quantity, of desired quality, at the required time, and at the optimum cost.

IV.

Quality control: it relates to activities that finished products conforms to the

standard (pre-set) specifications laid down either by the manufacturer or the customer. Various techniques which are used in controlling the quality of a product includes inspection, statistical quality control, control charts, etc.
