1. Two framing angles ISA150x150x10mm are used to make a beam to column connection. The angles are connected on either side of the web of the beam in such a way that one of the legs of the angles are connected to beam and the other is connected to the column using 3 bolts of 16mm diameter and grade 4.6. If the column section is ISHB300@618N/m and the beam sections is ISMB350@514N/m, determine the reaction that can be transferred through the joint. Fig 1 2. An ISA100x100x10mm carries a factored tensile load of 100kN. It is to be joined with a gusset plate 12mm thick. Design a high strength bolted joint when (a) no slip is permitted, (b) when slip is permitted. Assume steel grade of Fe410. 3. The connection shown in Fig.1 uses 20mm diameter 10.9 grade bolts with threads in shear plane to connect an ISF150x12mm with gusset plate 16mm thick. Determine the strength of the joint if (a) slip is permitted, (b) if slip is permitted. 4. A double angle section ISA150x150x15mm is connected to 16mm thick gusset plate as shown in Fig. 2. Determine the service load the connection can carry based on the shear and bearing strength of bolts assuming the bolts are of 4.6 grade and 24mm in diameter. 5. Determine the number of 24mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6 Fig 2 required for the double bolted double cover butt joint shown in fig 3 assuming the thread of bolts are not to fall in shear planes. 6. Design a double cover butt joint to connect two plates to connect two plates each 12mm thick and 300mm wide to transfer a service load of 200kN. 7. Determine the maximum factored load that can be applied on the joint for the case shown in Fig. 4 assuming the weld of size 3mm is made on site. Fig. 3 8. A 150x115x12mm angle section is to be connected to a 12mm thick gusset plate at site. Design the fillet weld to carry a load equal to the capacity of the member. 9. Design a fillet weld to join tension member consisting of 2ISA100x75x8mm to a 12mm thick gusset plate. The factored tensile force that the connection has to transfer is 410kN. 10. A double angle tension member 2ISA75x50x8mm is subjected to a Fig. 4 service load of 300kN. It is connected to a gusset plate with one line of 16mm bolts through the longer leg. Does this member have enough strength? 11. An ISMC225 is connected with 16mm bolts as shown in Fig.5. What is the maximum tensile load that can be resisted? 12. A pair of unequal angles is chosen to resist a factored tensile load of 900kN. The connection requires the arrangement shown in Fig. 6 with

2 gauges in its long leg and one in short leg for 20mm bolts. Design the member. 13. Design a tension member to carry a factored tensile load 400kN. Two angles placed back to back with long legs Fig. 6 outstanding are desirable. The length of the member is 2.9m. 14. Design a suitable splice to connect two mild steel flats 240ISF10mm and 200ISF18mm. 15. A single angle section ISA60x60x3mm, 3m long is used as strut. The ends are welded to gusset plates. Determine the design compressive strength and the service load that can be applied. 16. Design a column of length 4.8m to carry a factored load of 2500kN if the ends of the columns are restrained in direction and position at both ends. 17. Design a continuous strut to carry a service load of 175kN if the effective length is 5.8m.

1. Determine the effective length of a built up column as a whole under axial load of 1000kN. Consider 2ISMC350 placed face to face forming a column of dimension 350x350mm. Assume the effective length of the column is 6.6m. Assume grade of steel to be 410MPa. 2. Design a suitable cross section for a compression member, having a length of 11m, to carry a dead load of 1200kN and a live load of 5000kN. Assume the ends to be restrained in position but not in direction at both ends. The member is laterally supported in its weak axis at a distance of 3m from both ends. 3. Design a built up column with 4 angles laced together to support a factored load of 1800kN. The effective length of the column is 7.20m. 4. Design a column, having an effective length of 5.2m, with two channel sections placed toe to toe spaced apart and battened together to support a factored axial load of 3300kN. 5. A column section ISHB150@265N/m is to be spliced together with another column section ISHB150@339N/m. the factored compressive load is 400kN. Design the splice. 6. A column ISHB225@459N/m is to be spliced at floor level. The member is subjected to factored axial load, transverse shear and bending moment of 500kN, 150kN and 50kNm respectively. Design suitable splices.
