Obama: Poland A Model for New Democracies

, @_[_@Q__[[[]
TOPIC1
Reporter:
President Obama, at a Warsaw news conference
with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, said
Poland has overcome extraordinary challenges and
built a successful democracy. And he said Poland
can use its experience to serve as an example for
new democracies in Europe, the Middle East and
North Africa.
President Obama:
Poland can play an extraordinary role, precisely
because they have traveled so far so rapidly over
the last 25 years.
Reporter:
Earlier in the day, Mr. Obama and Polish President
Bronislaw Komorowski met with some of the
activists who brought democracy to Poland. They
discussed their recent efforts assisting Tunisia in
starting a democratic government.
President Obama reaffirmed that the United States
remains committed to Polands security, and that
the so-called reset in ties with Russia will help
calm tensions in the region.
President Obama:
What we want to do is to create an environment in
this region in which peace and security are a given.
Thats not just good for this region, it is good for
the United States of America. And we will always
be there for Poland.

LESSON POINTS
1. Why did President Obama say that Poland can serve as an example?
2. What kind of action will help calm tensions in Poland?
3. What does President Obama think of missile defense?
4. What did President Obama affirm during his trip to Europe?
Reporter:
The president reassured his Polish hosts that
despite Russias objections, the U.S. will base
fighter jets in Poland, and will go ahead with its
planned missile defense system.
President Obama:
We believe that missile defense is something where
we should be cooperating with the Russians
because we share external threats, and this would
not be a threat to the strategic balance that Russia
is concerned with.
Reporter:
Warsaw was the final stop in Mr. Obamas six-day
trip to Europe. In Poland, as in Ireland, Britain and
France, the president emphasized the importance of
U.S.-European relations.
President Obama:
Its fitting that I conclude my trip here in Poland.
At each stop Ive affirmed the fact that Americas
transatlantic alliance is the cornerstone of our
engagement in the world.
Reporter:
Mr. Obama concluded his European tour by paying
respects at a memorial to the late Polish President
Lech Kaczynski and 95 others, many of them top
government officials, who died in a plane crash in
April 2010. Kent Klein, VOA News, with
President Obama in Warsaw.

Middle East Analysts Praise,
Express Concern about Obama Speech
_g(, _g@\\]
Reporter:
As Arab protests continue to sweep across the
Middle East, analysts say the primary goals of
President Obamas speech were to call for political
and economic changes, while standing behind the
peaceful protestors and against violence.
Referring to the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia,
Mr. Obama noted that so far this year two leaders
have stepped down in the region, and said more
may follow as demonstrators demand their basic
rights. Graeme Bannerman is a scholar at the
Middle East Institute.
Graeme Bannerman:
The Arab Spring, as we call it, is changing the
region and he wants to make sure that people in the
region know and that the American people know,
that the United States supports the changes that are
occurring in the region.
Reporter:
Mr. Obama announced financial incentives to
support modernization and stability in Egypt and
Tunisia. That brought a positive reaction from
Dalya in Cairo.
Dalya:
He understands what we are going through. He is
trying to do his best.
Reporter:
President Obama says the people of Syria have

shown their courage in peacefully demanding a

transition to democracy, while the government in
Damascus is brutally cracking down on the
protestors.
Mr. Obama bluntly said Syrian President Bashar al-
Assad now faces a choice to either lead that
transition or get out of the way.
Robert Satloff is executive director of the
Washington Institute.
Robert Satloff:
But if they can continue to protest, then I think the
clock is inexorably ticking to the point where U.S.
policy will be - its time for you to go, Mr. Assad.
Reporter:
Perhaps drawing the most attention were Mr.
Obamas remarks on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,
as Arab protests have come to the borders of the
Jewish state. For the first time a U.S. president said
publicly the borders of Israel and a future state of
Palestine should be based on lines that existed
before the 1967 Middle East War, with mutually
agreed land swaps with the Palestinians. Such a
move could leave Jewish settlements in the West
Bank outside of Israel. Israelis and Palestinians
reacted to the speech Friday in Jerusalem.
Chaim:
Ignore Mr. Obama. Simple, we are an independent,
sovereign state.
Hajir:
What happened to us before Obama and what has
happened to us since Obama, nothing has changed.
Actually, things are going backward.

President Obama also called for the full withdrawal
of Israeli military forces from the West Bank.
Analysts say being so specific about sensitive
issues in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process could
draw attention away from his overall message of
supporting peaceful change. Analyst Robert
Satloff.
Robert Satloff:
I do think that the president injected the seeds of a
major distraction from that by delving in as
detailed and provocative way as he did in the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

As the Arab uprisings continue to transform the
region, analysts say President Obamas strategy
will likely evolve over time. They say the U.S. and
other countries will have to adapt their policies to
reflect the changes continuing to roil the Middle

Farming Tips Reach Developing World Via Cell Phone
g\, Qgg@@[_Q_
Reporter:
This mobile phone video shows farmers how to
make a natural insecticide out of seeds from the
neem tree. It is one of several videos produced by a
group at the University of Illinois demonstrating
simple, low-cost ways to improve the lives of
people in the developing world. Getting this kind of
information to those who could benefit from it the
most is a challenge, but new technology is helping,
says the University of Illinois Barry Pittendrigh.
Barry Pittendrigh:
Theres been a dramatic revolution in the way that
we can share information, and thats come about
both through the Internet and through the dramatic
increase in use of cell phones, especially in
developing nations.
Reporter:
Cell or mobile phones are everywhere in the
developing world and they are becoming
increasingly sophisticated, says Purdue University
crop scientist Jess Lowenberg-DeBoer.
Jess Lowenberg-DeBoer:
We discovered that many farmers had cell phones
that would play video clips, we thought, OK, can
we use those cell phones as a way to communicate
this visual information?

Jess Lowenberg-DeBoer:
Closing the bags is something that, if you see it,
you will understand it very quickly, and most
people do. But explaining it in words is quite
difficult.
Reporter:
So Lowenberg-DeBoer says a video like this one is
the perfect medium. One of the most remarkable
things about mobile phone videos is how fast they
can spread he adds. His team did an experiment
where they loaded the video on seven phones and
watched what happened.
Jess Lowenberg-DeBoer:
In one month, the video had spread to 118 people
in 50 different villages, and we think that this is
just incredible impact from a very modest
investment.
Reporter:
Farmers pass videos from phone to phone using
Bluetooth wireless technology. And those videos
can be a real advantage when trying to reach
farmers with little formal education, says Tolulope

with the animations, its easy to get the information

We film them locally, and when people see the

Dr. Phil Shauer:
For they leave the hospital, theyll never use

International medical researchers are racing to find

strain of E. coli bacteria that has killed dozens and
sickened thousands. At least four people in
America who visited Germany became sick. Dr.

Georgetown Hospital in Washington expects more
cases in the U.S. soon.
Robynne Chutkan:
There is so much international travel between the
U.S. and Europe I think its completely conceivable
that then the next few weeks we could be seeing
some outbreaks of this potentially new and more
4)
virulent strain of E. coli here in the United States.
Reporter:
The E. coli outbreak in Germany has left hundreds
of people hospitalized with life threatening kidney
complications. It comes as U.S. health officials
released data showing an increasing number of
people were sickened by rare forms of E. coli
bacteria in America last year. Pat Buck is executive
director of the Center for
5)
Foodborne Illness

organization in 2006 after her grandson Kevin died
from eating food tainted with E. coli bacteria. Buck
says more can be done to improve U.S. food safety

Reporter:
Dr. Chutkan says the nasty form of E. coli hitting
Europe illustrates the need for testing more foods
in the United States for rare strains of the bacteria.
Robynne Chutkan:
One of the frightening and rather challenging
aspects that this outbreak has illustrated is that
foodborne illnesses can affect many different types
of food. We thought of E. coli in the past as
something that has been more strongly associated
with meat, but here were seeing
6)
produce:
tomatoes, cucumbers, potentially sprouts and
lettuce being affected.
Reporter:
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention has alerted state health departments of
the ongoing outbreak, and requested information
about any people who test
7)
positive for the E. coli
strain. The Food and Drug Administration has also
stepped up testing of foods imported from affected
countries. There are also new laws in place
requiring the FDA to set standards to guard against
all kinds of
8)
contamination in fresh produce. Dr.
Thomas Tallman, with the Cleveland Clinic, says
the E. coli outbreak in Europe should be a wake-up

Award-Winning Film Explores Meaning of Life
_g, _[[_[
Reporter:
The Tree of Life is about the quest to find balance
between ones spiritual self and human nature.
Filmmaker Terrence Malick, a former professor of
philosophy, presents this innate struggle through
characters in a suburban American household of
the 1950s. The father is proud and oppressive. He
struggles inwardly because he has not succeeded in
the world. Because of his feelings of inadequacy,
he tries to mold his sons to his ideal.
Father: Thats a good right. Lets see your left.
Its the most important thing, Okay? You
come in this way, you come in this way, put
the guard up. Hit me. Come on, hit me. Come
on! Come on, Jack. Hit me. Hit me. Hit me.
Come on. Come on. Hit. Here it is. Here it is.
Hit it. Come on son, come on! Son, left.
Reporter:
Jack is still a boy, but he carries the world on his
shoulders. He admires his father, but also resents
him. For Terrence Malick, the struggle between
father and son reflects both the cruelty and beauty
of nature. In a twenty minute sequence, the
director offers shots of the universe at work, an
awesome struggle among natural forces. But there
is also grace, kindness and altruism. The mother in
the story, played by Jessica Chastain, embodies
them.

way then told well, its Gods will.
Reporter:
Religion aside, the film is a treatise on the meaning
of life. Its extraordinary visuals, minimal dialogue
and meditative music have a subliminal impact on
the viewer and allow the audience to search and to
come to its own conclusion. Some critics have
spoken against the films drawn-out sequences on
the evolution of the universe. But Tree of Life won
the Palme DOr at Cannes for good reason. It offers
daring cinematography and an excellent cast. And
although it carries Terrence Malicks signature, its
unlike anything weve seen before. Penelope
