Industry Profile
Because www.siliconindia.com is a web portal is a online service provider in various field. It comes under Social networking service.

A social networking service is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, who, for example, share interests and/or activities. A social network service essentially consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging. Online community services are sometimes considered as a social network service, though in a broader sense, social network service usually means an individual-centered service whereas online community services are group-centered. Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, activities, events, and interests within their individual networks.[citation needed] The main types of social networking services are those which contain category places (such as former school year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages) and a recommendation system linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with Facebook and Twitter widely used worldwide, Nexopia (mostly in Canada), Bebo, VKontakte, Hi5, Hyves (mostly in The Netherlands), Draugiem.lv (mostly in Latvia), StudiVZ (mostly in Germany), iWiW (mostly in Hungary), Tuenti (mostly in Spain), Nasza-Klasa (mostly in Poland), Decayenne, Tagged, XING, Badoo and Skyrock in parts of Europe; Orkut and Hi5 in South America and Central America and Mixi, Multiply, Orkut, Wretch, renren and Cyworld in Asia and the Pacific Islands and LinkedIn and Orkut are very popular in India. There have been attempts to standardize these services to avoid the need to duplicate entries of friends and interests (see the FOAF standard and the Open Source Initiative). A 2011 survey found that 47% of American adults used a social network.

Human Resource:
Siliconindia has its own HR department to dealt with Human Resource issue. People: Three HR people are there to handle recruitment and Internal Issue. Policies: They follow strict policies of punctuality and regularity. Different kind of penalties and rewards are given to policies offender and follower. Why Companies Need HR Policies & Job Descriptions ? Straight-forward, clear and consise HR policies and job descriptions are imporant for a number of reasons. Failing to implement policies and job descriptions leaves your company open to legal challenges, grievances and lawsuits, especially if you inconsistently apply your human resouces policies and your pay structure/system. Grievances and lawsuits lead to: Increased costs that affect your profits Increased turnover Negative morale Your company will avoid these problems if you implement hr policies, procedures and job descriptions and you can easily do this if you download our sample job descriptions and hr policies. Your company needs human resources policies and procedures and current job descriptions so that your staff are treated equally across a variety of employment issues. In addition, human resouce polices help if legal situations arise for: Small Business Owners Managers HR Professionals HR Consultants Lawyers

Purposes:HR policies allow an organization to be clear with employees on: The nature of the organization What they should expect from the organization What the organization expects of them How policies and procedures work What is acceptable and unacceptable behavior The consequences of unacceptable behavior
39 | P a g e

The establishment of policies can help an organization demonstrate, both internally and externally, that it meets requirements for diversity, ethics and training as well as its commitments in relation to regulation and corporate governance. For example, in order to dismiss an employee in accordance with employment law requirements, amongst other considerations, it will normally be necessary to meet provisions within employment contracts and collective bargaining agreements. The establishment of an HR Policy which sets out obligations, standards of behavior and document displinary procedures, is now the standard approach to meeting these obligations.

HR policies can also be very effective at supporting and building the desired organizational culture. For example recruitment and retention policies might outline the way the organization values a flexible workforce, compensation policies might support this by offering a 48/52 pay option where employees can take an extra four weeks holidays per year and receive less pay across the year.

Practice: They follow, International standard of HRM. 360 degree appraisal is a key way to give appraisal to employees.

Appraisal Method:Siliconindia practice following appraisal Method 360-Degree-Performance-Appraisal Method Management By Objectives(MBO) Method Human resources accounting method ( Human resources are valuable assets for every organization. Human resource accounting method tries to find the relative worth of these assets in the terms of money. In this method the Performance appraisal of the employees is judged in terms of cost and contribution of the employees. The cost of employees include all the expenses incurred on them like their compensation, recruitment and selection costs, induction and training costs etc whereas their contribution includes the total value added (in monetary terms). The difference between the cost and the contribution will be the performance of the employees. Ideally, the contribution of the employees should be greater than the cost incurred on them. ) Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scale ( Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales (BARS) is a relatively new technique which combines the graphic rating scale and critical incidents method. It consists of predetermined critical areas of job performance or sets of behavioral statements describing important job performance qualities as good or bad (for eg. the qualities like inter personal relationships, adaptability and reliability, job knowledge etc). These statements are developed from critical incidents. In this method, an employees actual job behaviour is judged against the desired behaviour by recording and comparing the behaviour with BARS. Developing and practicing BARS requires expert knowledge.) Assessment Centers ( An assessment centre typically involves the use of methods like social/informal events, tests and exercises, assignments being given to a group of employees to assess their competencies to take higher responsibilities in the future. Generally, employees are given an assignment similar to the job they would be expected to perform if promoted. The trained evaluators observe and evaluate employees as they perform the assigned jobs and are evaluated on job related characteristics.
42 | P a g e

The major competencies that are judged in assessment centers are interpersonal skills, intellectual capability, planning and organizing capabilities, motivation, career orientation etc. assessment centers are also an effective way to determine the training and development needs of the targeted employees. )

Summary of Findings: People face problems regarding UI. Currently one receives multiple email notifications regarding any posting, it is very annoying to them. UI page can be modified - some examples are Linkedin, wiki answer etc. Other Q & A websites has lots more categories than SiliconIndia. There is a scope of improvement regarding font modification and color scheme in the Q & A display page. Some people get notification even without registration or after unsubscribing too. Answer posting method should be modified to some extent; it is hard to find newly posted answer from an old posted question. Many people post questions which are irrelevant to the category. People register in the site but the frequency of their visit is very low and avg. stay in a page is 9 sec. After registration many people dont come back It is a best site for future entrepreneurs they can be guided by leading professional through the site It could be more of a social site by adding online chat feature. Never the less it provides various categories of learning in one site

My recommendations: Include more and more categories in question and answer section and explicitly define them. For example- Linkedin defines sub-categories within its each category.

Make the database repository capable of generating instant answers. This will make the question and answer site more user friendly. The site is much complicated because it has everything in one place so it could be more user friendly Chat option for the user can be added there to interact with users directly which will bring more traffic to the site Job recommendation should be there to refer people by people which can make work more easier

Questions must be answered to the earliest as soon as possible.

Questions must be answered by the industry experts and professionals only having expertise and knowledge in specific area domain.

For example, if my question is - What does an IT company do in order to reduce attrition rate of its employees?

Now being a user I want this question to be answered by some industry expert , may be someone from HRD (human resource department) of an IT company like Infosys or Wipro or by a professional in the same sector. A professional in information technology sector could be one who is teaching as a professor in some institutes.

If my question is If in the coming years users can switch between and into various telecommunication service providers, then to save and gain market share what will telecomm companies do? For the above question I want the answers from an industry expert in telecomm companies like Tata, Reliance, Airtel, etc. which can give me some insights about the way telecomm companies strategize to survive the cut-throat competition in the market.

An IIT professor can help students by giving tips on how to crack IIT exam this year and can clear some of their doubts.

There must be an option on the page asking the user about the maximum possible time in which he wants to get an answer.

Keep answers short and precise, simple in language. If some short forms are used they must have a brief introduction. Answers can be detailed based on the knowledge of the expert responding to an answer.

If the subject which is being talked about is not known to the expert in detail a link must be provided beneath for the site which can give a clear idea about the concept involved in the subject.

It must be shown in the site somewhere near the answer that who has given the answer and where does his expertise lie. For an industry expert do not forget to mention his name, designation and the company he is currently working with. This will build trust in they answer seekers that the information is coming from a reliable source and is just not goofed up and is not a stub.

Being a professional website provide a platform to youth aspirants for the corporate world. It must help users in connecting to professionals and experts through Siliconindia.

Hire or tieup with professionals and experts which will solely work for siliconindia question and answer section and users will connect to them through siliconindia with no outside reach to them by users. In order to get answers from such experts users will never go to other sites and it will draw more and more traffic to the site.

A questionnaire must be made and filled by students in schools, colleges, coaching centres, etc. to know why they use question/answer blogs and sites and what do they expect from that.

Conclusion
Through studying the Organizational Structure and various aspect of Siliconindia. I came to an conclusion that Mr. Harvi Sachar (CEO founder of siliconindia) have done a great job by trying to bring all Indian professional under one roof. By the effort of him and his employee, Started from a scratch It reach to a level where almost everyone know its name and brand.

Even though it became huge it still has long way to go for begin truly global site. Comparison to counterpart web portal Silcionindia is way ahead. But still it lack the feeling of truly global like LinkedIn and other global sites. I think the way it grow from 14 employee to above 250 employee. In next 5year down the line it will be truly global. The dedication and integration of all the departments are very positive and friendly.

They have reach at the level where they will have tough competition form players like LinkedIn, minglebox.com , pagalguy.com etc.

I hope for the best that Silcionindia will be worlds first and biggest professional networking sites someday.
