Kx, Ky, Kz = reduction factors for slenderness ratios.
Lx = Web length in plane of joist from BC centroid to TC centroid.
Ly = Web length out of plane of joist from BC centroid to TC centroid.
Lz = Lx.
rx = radius of gyration of web in the plane of the joist.
ry = radius of gyration of web out of plane of the joist.
rz = least radius of gyration of web.
Q = reduction factor slender compression elements.
A = Cross sectional area of web.
Due to 45rotation of crimped web angles, rx, ry, and rz values are all taken with respect to the principal axes of the angle,
with rx and rz equalling the least radius of gyration and ry equalling the maximum radius of gyration.

Web Connection Details between Crimped Angle Webs, Double Angle Webs, and Rod Webs to
Joist or Joist Girder Chords
Additional Design Considerations
Joist webs are modeled with pinned ends. Therefore, end moments cannot develop, and so local second order (P-) effects
are not considered. Tensile fracture, or shear lag, is not required to be designed for by SJI based on extensive testing
commissioned by SJI and performed by Villanova University.
Single angle uncrimped webs placed in the chord gap (section D above) are modeled with eccentricity due to the web centroid
not being aligned with joist centerline. This is reflected by a moment on the Forces Report, and a corresponding bending
stress on the Stresses Report. Since the eccentricity is out of plane of the joist, it typically will not combine with the axial
stress in the web according to the standard interaction equations.
Stresses are calculated based on SJI criteria as shown here. Use of other criteria, such as AISC, may yield different results
where SJI and AISC formulas or factors differ.
