Dwajasthamba in church compounds – Indian or

Hindu?
Catholic churches have begun erecting flagpoles such as this one at a Hindu temple in Kerala (below left):

The flag mast is variously called “dwajasthambam”, “kodi maram”, “kodi kambam”, etc.

In 2011, a 90-foot tall dwajasthamba was erected at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Thomas, the first one in the
Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore (above, right). It was followed by many others.

Like their Hindu temple counterparts, the ones in the church compounds are made of “panchalogam”.
Panchalogam or panchaloha in the superstitious Hindu tradition consists of five metals combined in
specifically laid down proportions and circumstances as laid down in the Hindu Sastras; "panch" means five
and "loha" means metal.
Why do the church flag posts also have to be made of the superstitious combination of five metals?

Newspaper stories described the St Thomas mast as an “Indian-styled”. But are they all “Indian” or “Hindu”?
Hindu readers of the newspapers are quite certain of the answer:

Three letters to the editor from incensed Hindus in the print edition of the Mylapore Times, July 16-22, 2011:
Another example of Christian appropriation of Hindu elements. There is now Christian Yoga, Christian
Carnatic music, Christian Bharatanatyam, and now Christian Dwajastambha! –Venkat
It was once rightly said by a Hindu leader: If Indianisation of Christianity is done for Christianisation of India,
then Hindus have a real cause for worry. –Siddharth
Funny the editor calls it Indian-style. Isn’t it Hindu? –Surya
As I have documented in dozens of reports, what is going on in the Indian Catholic Church is neither the
Indianisation of Christianity nor the Christianisation of India but the Hinduisation of Christianity.
Protestant denominations will not erect these superstitious Hindu objects on the premises of their churches.

WHY THESE FLAGPOLES ARE HINDU, NOT “INDIAN”

The dhvaja sthambam or dvaja stambha is the Hindu temple’s flag mast… and more; the Sanskrit word for
flag is “dhvaja” and “pole” is “sthambam”. Note that North Indian temples do not use them.

Panchaloha idols are mostly found in Hindu temples in India. The five metals are gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron. The
percentage of metals used is 1 portion of silver, 1 portion of gold, 5 portions of copper, 2 portions of zinc and a 1 portion of
iron. This percentage is only to give a general idea and might vary from region to region. Craftsmen from Padoli always
prefer customers to bring all the high cost metals like gold and silver when we melt panchaloha to pour it in to the mould of
god on an auspicious day. The dates for melting the panchaloha will be informed in advance to the customer. Panchaloha
idols are worshipped for thousands of years in Hindu temples in India.

Silpasastras prescribe the composition of the alloy to be chosen for casting sacred icons. Archaeologists have excavated
icons and idols proving that for the last 3,000 years, panchaloha (literally meaning an alloy of five metals) has been most
widely used for making icons and idols. This five-metal combination of Cu, Au, Ag, Pb, and Zn was considered to be a highly
auspicious composition and is still used for icons cast for worship.

Please let me know the importance of Dvaja Sthamba in Vaisnava Temples. Why do we have this and I have seen that
Brahmotsavam begins with a Puja to Dvaja Sthambam. Why?
Dhvaja Stambha, or Flag Staff, is an important feature of most South Indian Temples. In North Indian Temples, flags are
hoisted from a section of the main temple and rarely do we see a separate flag pole or Dhwaja Stambha. The flag staff is
located in front of the Sanctum. A Dhvaja Stambha usually represents the prosperity and pride of a temple but some texts
do suggest that the bottom of a flag post symbolizes Shiva, middle portion Brahma and the top portion Vishnu.
A permanent Dvaja Stambha is believed to be a later addition to the Hindu Temple. Initially, it was temporary and was
primarily used to indicate the beginning of a festival or other auspicious days and occasions.
Today, Dvaja Stambhas are a permanent feature in many south Indian temples and are gold or silver plated or covered with
copper or brass. The top portion of the flag staff in some temples in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has three
horizontal perches or three branches pointing towards the Sanctum. It symbolizes righteousness, reputation and propriety or
the Trimurtis – Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva. Usually, a Bali Pitha is located near to the Dvaja Stambha and the Sanctum.
But the three branches are not widely found in the temples in Kerala. Instead, in Kerala Temples it is a single straight pole.
There is a widespread belief that the Dvaja Stambha gives an idea to a devotee from a long distance about the idol installed
in the temple and about the vahana or vehicle used by the deity. It also announces about a festival in a temple. Flags are
usually hoisted when there is an auspicious ceremony or festival in the temple.

1. Copy Copy everything copy. Only one thing to say to every idiot in Christians. Copy Copy everything is copy and do
without any shame...Shameless creatures
2. It is not a national shrine for the so-called Thomas. It was the place where the original Sri Kapaleeswarar temple stood.
The Portuguese captured Mylapore after the fall of the Vijayanagar empire in 1565, demolished the temple, built this
cathedral, renamed the place Santhome, and imposed the Thomas myth on our history books. Perhaps, the putting up of the
dwaja stambham is an unwitting acceptance of this fact. The next logical thing would be to restore the temple where it
originally stood.

3. Very good: nilavilakku, chandanam, dwajastampa what more, coming back to roots, we just have to do balance work to
introduce the old root traditional gods only, but one thing should work to introduce. This is another wonder.
4. Inculturation is the new strategy of the Catholic and other churches. Hindus may think that by this they are showing
respect to our symbols. They are wrong. This strategy is put to work imitating Hindu symbols and even ways of aradhana
only to later make it as if Hindus have borrowed these from Christians. This is to erase separate Hindu identity which will
ease their aggressive propaganda and evangelisation and we need to realise the cunning ways Churches are adopting
5. We should be proud to see this being imitated. The only thing we could say is: Please don’t change the history after some
time, saying this was theirs and being imitated by Hindus with supporting sources that lacks specificity and justifying with
crooked stories.
6. Is there any sense in such meaningless imitations? Can a religion that is constantly imitating other religions be called a
religion at all? The Dhwajastambha represents THE AWAKENED KUNDALINI of the deity in the temple. Is there
any Kundalini for these … religions?
7. We Hindus must support these plagiarists and quickly move to install our deities - Brahma, Vishnu, Maheswara and the
Devis and Hanumanji, Kalabhairava, Dakshinamurthy etc. etc. in all these churches and appropriate these religious places.
We must also do upanayam of the priests of these temple churches and teach them the real scriptures so that they can
perform Hindu pujas, rituals etc. correctly.
Then we must also change their names back to the Hindu Bharatiya names and welcome them back from their foreign
experience to Bharatiya experience.
Any Hindus willing to join hands, form a group to assist these ex Hindus who had gone astray to return to the Hindu fold
and form a reunited Bharat once again.
8. Hindu's should refute back against this kind of mindless inculturation by Christians in a scientific manner. That's right.
There is a reason for putting a Dwajasthamba in front of every Garbhaguddi, where Hindu deities are placed and worshiped.
http://ssubbanna.sulekha.com/blog/post/2008/03/temple-architecture-devalaya-vastu-part-four-4.htm
9. Dwajastambham represents God's sukshma sarira, and Kundalini. Bottom side of the stambha is mooladhar and
top is sahararam. Bottom is brahma bhagam, middle is vishnu bhagam.
Astadikpalakar must be installed around the dwajastambham. Garuda should be installed in the top.
Hindu temples are considered as human body with all the chakras in it. Dwajastambham is installed in the mooladhar
chakra. It is connected with kadakash energy.
When you close your eyes by standing near the dwajastambha, your chidakash will get enhanced. If you are sensitive
enough you can see different unknown colours in your chidakash. Dwajastambha attracts positive akashic energy and reflect
it to the surrounding areas.
Hindus are erecting dwajastambhas by considering Agama sastra. It must be placed just in between the main entrance and
the girbhagriha.
But Christians are simply erecting their stambhas in wrong place without considering Agama sutras-the art and science of
temple construction. So it attracts negative energy and reflects it to the surrounding areas. If you stand a few minutes under
the Christian stambhas, your chidakash will get smaller in size!
10. Evidently clear, they are slowly but for sure trying to embrace Santana Dharma. They already have Nilavilakku, on the
top Kurishu (cross), Yoga they are teaching but reluctant to chant Omkara Mantra, Maha Shivarati is celebrated,
Vidhyrambha to invoke Goddess of Wisdom, names are mostly the Paryayas of God and Goddesses, church's name is
changed to Devalaya, Vasthu Shastra is adopted as biblical science, and many things are changing. Come back with purity O
the children of Nazareth, come back to the wisdom of Bharath Matha the divine land to reach the Parama padam, end of the
cycle of birth, death and Moksha. One suggestion, Kunhadukale include Hari Om, Ram Ram or Namo Narayanaya when you
meet fellow deserters who are preparing to come back for his sake, that greet will purify your soul for sure! Don't be shy
come back children, come back to mama.
11. Dwajastambham is the kundalini like a serpent which starts from the root chakra in our body and pictured
to the head crown as 'sahasradalapadma chakra' called as 1000 petals lotus flower similar to the seat of lord brahma as
lotus flower emanated from the naval of lord vishnu. So placing dwajasthabham before the dead person bleeding the blood
will cause much problems for the worshipper of dead person in cross since negative energy from kundalini dwajasthambham
will spread and cause trouble to the church goers. One day all churches will be deserted soon.
12. I don’t understand why the Christians in Kerala copy the Hindu culture they have to understand that Hindu culture
centers around the Hindu gods and goddess and every ritual has a relation to a particular deity, now we find churches with
Dwajastampa, they started lighting nilavilakku with a cross on top and now they have abandoned the cross and started
using nilavilakku with the peacock on top, started celebrating vidyarambham, the band sets are replaced by nadaswaram
and panchavadiyam, they have started decorating churches as seen in temples during festivals, ponkalas as in attukal
temple is practised in some churches, elephants have started to appear in church festivals, and christian devotional songs in
Sanskrit, hindu names like laxmi, arjun, and many more are in the pipeline.

A local Hindu reader writes to the editor, Mylapore Times, February 13-19, 2016:
Is Mylapore Times propaganda material for Christians?
While I appreciate the broadmindedness or the vasudeva kutumbakam attitude shown by the two people who replied to
Sridhar Chandrasekhar’s letter on churches celebrating the festival of Pongal, I am disappointed that they call him intolerant
and accuse him of dividing communities.

Tolerance has its limits. One can be tolerant so long as the other party concerned does not indulge in anything to hurt either
physically or emotionally.
There is no dispute that Pongal is a Hindu festival. I hope the Church is not celebrating Pongal with a view to satisfy the
converted and also to convert more people.
In its coverage, Mylapore Times also makes Pongal look like a festival of the Christians. Is it acting like a propaganda
material for Christians?
I recall an earlier letter in Mylapore Times about dwajasthambhams in churches.
Why do churches want to copy everything that is Hindu and give a Christian tag to it? –Savithri Kailasanath,

Dwajasthambam Significance Hinduism

https://ramanan50.wordpress.com/2014/08/29/dwajasthambam-significance-hinduism/ EXTRACT
A flagpole is erected in the Hindu temple before the Sanctum and after the room immediately, Thirukkadavur.
In some temples it is situated outside the main hall where the Deity is, Palani.
The Devatas are believed to follow us in the temples.
The Dwajasthamba is believed to carry the power of the God in the temple.
The Dwajasthamba is very holy and all festivals are conducted only after performing Pooja for the Dwajasthamba and a flag
is hoisted.
One has to prostrate before the Dwajasthamba and never in between the Dwajasthamba and the Idol.
The number of prostrations also varies and depends on the main deity or custom of the temple architecture. Before visiting
the main deity (moolavar) inside generally pradakshina is done with number varying from 1, 3 5, etc. The broad significance
of pradakshina in a clock wise direction is: By doing the pradakshina main deity is always in the center and we maintain
equidistant from the center. The energy and grace which enters inside the human soul is immeasurable. When you do
pradakshina you are faithfully and sincerely winding divinity around you. We are supposed to do the pradakshina of desired
numbers and then enter inside to be with main deity. Of course all this is not possible in a temple like Tirupathi or in other
crowded temples. In such case one has to be satisfied by doing atmapradakshina.
The top portion of the flag staff has three horizontal perches or three branches pointing towards the Sanctum. It symbolizes
righteousness, reputation and propriety or the Trimurtis – Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva.
Initially, it was temporary and was primarily used to indicate the beginning of a festival or other auspicious days and
occasions.
Dwajasthambam also symbolizes the spine or Back-Bone. Near the Dwajasthambam in case of South Indian temples is the
Bali Peetam. Rice and other anointments are offered here by the priests, who then progress to all other presiding deities
around the temple and subsequently to the main deity. The significance of Garuda in the Dwajastambham is, that he is
waiting eagerly to guide us to the lord. Garuda also removes any sarpadoshas in the body.
The Construction of Dwajasthamba… [Sastras]

The Ancient scriptures mention that the Temple is not only a home of God but stunningly the form of God Himself, by
comparing the structure of the Temple to God as perceived in human form. For this, the Girba-Griha (or womb chamber) is
considered to be the Head of God, Mahamandapa the stomach and Gopuram the feet. (Medhrasthaneshu Dwajasthambam –
Dwajasthambam is male organ)

Dwajasthambam parts and residing devatas:

Panjaratra Agama based:
From top to bottom
Yashti – Indra
Rajju – Anandan
Dwajam – Vihakesanan
Valayam – Vasuki.
Bhedika – Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra
Mani – Lakshmi
Mala – Saraswathi
Padma Madhyam – East (Garuda), South (Pakshirajan), West (Suparnan), North (Vinatasutan)
Pradamavaranam – Sankam, Chakram, Musalam, Katkam, Gadha, Sarngam, Padmam, Vajram
Dwitiyavaranam – Lokabalakas
Mekalai – Mandalatrayam
Dhandakre – Vinatasudam

A Rosary of Rudraksha* Beads

By G.C. Shekhar, Chennai, November 13, 2017
There exists a blur in the Tamil Christian identity. That is to smoothen proselytisation, argue critics.
Thousands of Christians in Tamil Nadu, particularly the Catholics, have no compunction in being associated with
Hindu religious practices. Many incorporate them into their own worship of Jesus or Mary. Take, for instance, Sunitha.
The young Chennaiite nervously tied the taali (yellow ‘mangalsutra’) around the white grill in front of the statue of Mother
Mary in her city’s Velankanni church in Besantnagar. Her fists clasped in a tight grip and eyes closed, she prayed intensely
for a couple of minutes before doing the cross sign even as her boyfriend looked on. “We have been wanting to marry for
two years, but there is opposition from both sides even though both of us are Catholics,” Sunitha says. It was then that a
close relative suggested tying the taali before Annai Maria could fulfil her wish. Just as she and her friend walked into the
church, another couple brought a small toy cradle, bought from the shop at the church entrance, and tied it to the same
white grill. Their prayer: to have a child.
The taali and the cradle have been integral to many Hindu temples across the state, but their spread to the
church represents a continuing ‘Tamilisation’ of Christianity.
The flag mast in front of churches is another example. The metal-clad pole is modelled on the dwaja-
sthambam—or ‘kodimaram’—in Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. However, it is the cross at their base in
churches, unlike in temples where it is either a bull (for Shiva temples) or garuda (Vishnu temples). “They may look out of
place in front of the tall spires, but even these masts have become a place of worship in the church,” says Chennai historian
Vincent D’Souza (liberal owner-editor of Mylapore Times). “With many donors keen to erect these masts, even
centuries-old churches (in Chennai) like Santhome or Luz have willingly given space for them.”
The kodimarams at temples have to adhere to the shastras: the masts with specified height and circumference have
to be placed between the main tower and the courtyard leading to the sanctum sanctorum. At the church, they are mostly
concrete pillars covered by brass or five-metal panchaloha alloy—and erected right in the front. Not all nationalist outfits
are amused. “It is a crass attempt to give a Hindu identity to a Christian place of worship,” argues Pa Senthil
of the Hindu Makkal Katchi. “It’s only during festival days when churches used to have a flag mast, that too
just temporary and wooden. Making it a permanent fixture is aimed at wooing gullible Hindus.”

Christian leaders disagree. For them, indigenisation is the word for such practices. The flag mast is only the “latest chapter”
in such a “conscious move by our Church,” says Fr. Jegath Gaspar, a Catholic priest who founded Tamil Maiyam, a cultural
outfit that promotes Tamil Nadu’s native folk arts. “Christianity in Tamil Nadu has deliberately incorporated local
practices associated with the Hindu tradition.”

Instances? Welcoming VIPs with the auspicious ‘poorna kumbam’ (a water-filled metal pot decorated with
mango leaves and a coconut on top), draping the idol (Velankanni) in sarees, pulling chariots during festivals and
carrying statues or pictures of saints in palanquins. “They are so evolved that even ‘anga pradakshinam’ (where a devotee
rolls on the ground as a form of prayer in Hindu temples) is now performed by Christians as ‘kumbidu saranam’ in some
churches,” points out Gaspar.
Other Christian rituals of worship also run closely parallel to Hindu formats. The annual Velankanni festival (near
Nagapattinam, 350 km south of Chennai) is marked by devotees following a strict diet for set days, wearing light-saffron
clothes and beads, making long walks to the church and even tonsuring the heads—all these resemble the temple pilgrimage
Hindus undertake to Sabarimala, Tirumala or the Samayapuram Amman temple.
“None of these has been prescribed by the church or any Christian leader,” says Fr. Joe Varghese of the Besantnagar Vela-
nkanni church. “This has emanated from the popular devotion of the faithful. True, they may resemble Hindu practices but
the Church cannot instruct the devout to eschew them. If they want to marry the local customs to the Christian faith, the
Church cannot be a hindrance.” It is the same intermarriage of faith that brings thousands of Hindus to the Velankanni’s
main shrine in the hope of a solution to their problems, he adds.
Christian missionaries have believed that such co-option of local practices, along with subaltern language in the Bible and
prayers, has helped the Church integrate the new arrivals into the laity who otherwise could be vulnerable to returning to
the mainstream. Veeramamunivar (Constanzo Besci), an 18th-century Jesuit priest from Italy who was also a Tamil scholar,
was the first who attempted this ‘inculturation’, says theologian S. Emmanuel. “That was when he called Our Lady of
Assumption at the Kamanayakkanpatti church (in south Tamil Nadu) ‘Periyanayaki’, a consort of Lord Shiva,”
he recalls. “Such cultural inclusiveness was further endorsed by the second Vatican council in 1962-65 that urged local
churches to encourage ‘inculturation’ in every possible way,” adds Dr. Emmanuel.
Even Hindu festivals like Deepavali, Pongal and Ayudha Pooja are celebrated by many Christians these days, observes Dr.
Emmanuel, who heads PILLAR, a training centre in Madurai. “During Ayudha Pooja when Hindus perform poojas to their
vehicles, Christians get their priests to bless their cars. A lot also has to do with children compelling their parents to adopt
these practices,” he says. “On Pongal** Day, Christian mothers can be seen making the festival sweet dish and even
chorusing ‘Pongallo, Pongal’. Such multiculturalism has helped democratise Christianity here.”
The cultural crosscurrent has also seen Christians readily adopting art forms normally associated with Hinduism: Carnatic
music and Bharatanatyam. Alexander Babu, a software engineer-turned-stand-up comedian is also an avid Carnatic
music singer and yoga teacher—the last two are rare traits for a Christian. “My Carnatic guru (late) Suguna Puroshothaman
had no hesitation in teaching me classical music once she recognised my singing talent,” he explains. “Resistance, if any, I
faced only from fellow Christians who were not very comfortable with my singing Carnatic kritis that are in praise of
Hindu gods. Left to me, I found my Carnatic singing only took me closer to divinity...even when I practised at home.”
Babu recalls fondly how his guru, days before her death in early 2015, had made him sing  Yesu Kaaviyam, a rendition on
Jesus, during a lecture-demonstration. (Hinduism is syncretic, Christianity is not)
A lot of Christian gospels are currently sung to Carnatic ragas and metres, points out Vincent D’Souza, who also edits
kutcheribuzz.com, a website on south Indian classical music. Christian TV channels like Nambikkai and Aaseervatham show
Christian singers clad in ostentatious Kanjeevaram silk lip-syncing to Carnatic-based gospels in praise of Jesus. Middle-aged
Sister Hema John, a Brahmin Carnatic singer who converted to Christianity when she was 24, is virtually a superstar among
Christians for her effortless and appealing rendition of Carnatic-based gospel in Tamil.
Fr Paul Poovathingal, a (thoroughly Hinduised liberal) Kerala priest who sings Carnatic-based prayers during the Holy
Mass, attests that Indian Christians on listening to them actually scaled new heights of devotion since their ears were more
attuned to Indian music. “I tell my devotees and the clergy in my state that Carnatic ragas and talas are soaked in devotion
compared to choir music. Slowly (yes, the poisoning is slow but sure) they have started accepting these raga-based
songs in the church.” Poovathingal, a trained classical musician with a PhD in ‘Carnatic music and Christianity’, recalls that
the Tamil language too had a rich tradition of Carnatic and folk-based Christian music that was replaced by Western choir
music during British rule. A 56-year-old vocologist from the state’s cultural capital Thrissur, he is confident that the Indian
music being heard in Kerala’s churches will soon spread to Tamil Nadu as well (it already has).
Compared to the similarity of religious practices, the cultural connection is slow but happening: festivals organised under
the aegis of churches are now incomplete without a Bharatanatyam performance. The communication explosion
also helps in opening up cultural bottlenecks, feels D’Souza. “The local language, metre and themes are easier ways of exp-
ression compared to an imported style of singing and dancing,” he says. “Ultimately,” adds Dr. Emmanuel, “what wins out is
the greater comfort level in being a Tamil or Indian Christian than mimicking a European Christian.”

What is the significance of “Dhwaja Sthambam” (pole having many bells) in temples?
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-significance-of-%E2%80%9CDhwaja-Sthambam%E2%80%9D-pole-having-many-bells-

Dhwaja Stambha, or Flag Pole, is an important feature of most South Indian Temples. Dhwaja Stambha is installed in front
of the temple. Today, Dhwaja Stambhas are a permanent feature in many south Indian temples and are gold or silver plated
or covered with copper or brass. The top portion of the Dhwaja Stambham has three horizontal perches or three branches
pointing towards the Sanctum. It symbolizes righteousness, reputation and propriety or the Trimurtis – Vishnu, Brahma and
Shiva. Usually, a Bali Peetam is located near to the Dhwaja Stambha and the Sanctum.
Dhwaja Stambha is a tall post-like structure, which is referred to as the flag-mast of the deity of the temple. During

event. The Dhwaja Stambha is present in a straight line from the deity, just before the Vahana of the deity, which is also in
the same axial line.
There is a widespread belief that the Dhwaja Stambha gives an idea to a devotee about the idol installed in the temple and
about the Vahana or Vehicle used by the deity. It also announces about a festival in a temple. Flags are usually hoisted
when there is an auspicious ceremony or festival in the temple.
Most Hindu Temples have a Dhwaja Stambham in front of the temple. Temple worship starts from this point. You may see
worshippers touching this pillar. Some may go around this one to three times. Devotees prostrate on the ground in front of
this pillar. This symbolizes complete surrender of ones ego in veneration of the Lord. These are traditional ways of offering
one’s respect to God.
The ceremony of flying the temple flag on Dhwaja Stambha marked the inauguration of a major Utsava at the temple. The
flag also served as signal to indicate to the people of the town and the visitors that an Utsava is on. The old customs
required that no major domestic auspicious functions be held in the village while the temple flag is hoisted. This was perhaps
to suggest that the celebrations at the temple took precedence over those at homes; and that everyone in the village should
participate in the temple celebrations.
During Brahmotsavam, in Tirumala Venkateswara temple, on the first day, the main activity is the "Dwajarohana," the
hoisting of the Garuda flag at the Dhwajastambha. This signifies the commencement of the Brahmotsava
Dhwaja Stambha is also referred to as being a medium for the Heavens to be connected to the earth, which would refer to it
being a spiritual connector between us earthlings and the Supreme Being, God, above.

What is the importance of placing a dhwaja sthambam (pillar) in front of some temples?
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-importance-of-placing-a-dhwaja-sthambam-pillar-in-front-of-some-temples:
To my knowledge, on reading authentic articles from Tamil astrologers (which are rarely made available in Internet or other
famous magazines), it is placed a few feet opposite the statue present in the sanctum sanctorum. In ancient temples (I am
unsure of new temples), there are copper plates placed beneath the statue which may not be visible. Let me give a general
explanation. The planets in the universe are affected by the alignment of the 27 important stars (natchathiram in Tamil).
The energy (bio-magnetic force: vital for human existence or human cells) emitted from these planets and stars was found
to be beneficial for human existence and health. Hence, our ancestors placed a flag post exactly in front of the statue in
such a way that the flag post (of desired material to observe bio-magnetic force from planets) observes the bio-magnetic
energy from the space and directs it on the statue. This energy is then reflected upon the humans. This is the fact that I
read recently. Though there are news that the flag is for denoting festivals, blah, blah… which is also true, but what I said
seems to be the primary reason. (This is New Age –Michael)

Why are churches in South India installing Dwajasthambams like Hindu Temples?
https://www.quora.com/Why-are-churches-in-South-India-installing-Dwajasthambams-like-Hindu-Temples EXTRACT
In Kerala, Dwajasthambhams was common for Hindu and Buddhist temples, associated with Tantric customs.
Almost all major Eastern (Native) Churches of Kerala have Dwajasthambam in their churches due to their shared worship
concepts as like any Hindu or Buddhist rituals of that era.
Catholic churches that followed eastern rites also had such concepts due to same reason. (Syro Malabar Catholic Churches).
They have historically adopted lot of Hindu elements for their festivities, which were reduced in 18th and 19th centuries due
to displeasure of Pope over such. However by 20th century, many churches revived the old customs as part of promoting its
traditional legacies.
For both these churches, flag staff are very common, almost same like Hindu ones (probably with a cross on top) and
hosting flags for festival days.
Roman Catholic Churches, and Latin Catholic churches as well as CSI Churches of Kerala do not have the concept of
Dwajasthambam as majority of their rites were influenced from European concepts. (Not true anymore for the Latin
Rite Catholic churches –Michael)

FEEDBACK
From: Alphonse Surendar To: Michael Prabhu Sent: Thursday, May 30, 2013 10:15 AM
Congratulations dear Mike, on the 10th successful and glorious year of your ministry. Hats off to you for your charism for
publishing sensitive issues prevailing in the Church. Sometimes I doze off reading some of your long articles and then wake
up and continue reading till I come to the end.
Regarding brass Hindu flag posts, I have noticed them in practically in every Catholic parish. It has become a trend here in
Tamilnadu. And I always wondered why our separated brethren do not sport them in their places of worship. The sight of
such flag posts psychologically and spiritually alienates me from entering those churches. Do you think it is some sort of an
"Indianisation" gimmick of the Catholic Church to mimic Hinduism? I am confused.
So also, the Bharatanatyam, arati, the anjali (deepa, dupa, pushpa anjali) at the Elevation during the Holy Mass is
abominable. I just hate all this tamasha which dilutes the sacredness of the Eucharistic celebrations. Even our new
Archbishop had witnessed all these during his inaugural Eucharistic Episcopal Mass. I do not think he minds all these
tamashas. I am totally uncomfortable when I participate in the Holy Mass with such innovations.
Well, yours seems to be the "voice of one crying in the wilderness"!
