Guidelines for Becoming a Remote Centre

For some time, CDEEP has been recording and transmitting engineering and science courses for its programmes in distance education. IIT Bombay courses are now being recorded for live transmission through EDUSAT and are also Webcast live.

Courses taken at IIT Bombay are transmitted live through EDUSAT, the satellite dedicated to the education sector. The Remote Centres of IIT Bombay receive the transmission and project the lectures of a course onto a screen in its classroom. One of your teachers can be the local Course Associate who guides the students making sure that they clearly understand the lectures. For more details about the importance of a Course Associate, visit the March issue of our Newsletter Reachout (http://www.cdeep.iitb.ac.in/Reachout/Previous-issue.html).
A course is a subject taught for one semester comprising about 40 hours of lectures. The courses transmitted through CDEEP, at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, are meant for IIT students and therefore meet the exacting educational standards of IIT Bombay. Moreover, the lectures are delivered as per the designated schedule.

Please visit http://www.iitb.ac.in/acadpublic/Course.html to see all the courses offered by IIT Bombay in various disciplines. If your institute is interested in any of these courses, please let us know the name of the course along with its course code and we will try to get this course taught through CDEEP.
Please note that courses in IIT Bombay are taught in two semesters. The Autumn semester rd starts in the 3 week of July and extends to the last week of November while the Spring semester starts in the 1st week of January and ends in the last week of April.

Advantages of being a Remote Centre Students can take an IIT Bombay course in your college and clear doubts immediately with IIT Bombay instructors. They can see the type of assignments that are given and the standard of quizzes and tests. In some modes, students can access Moodle, the Learning Management System used in IIT Bombay, and interact offline with IIT Bombay faculty and students. IIT Bombay often hosts prominent international scientists and Nobel Laureates and their talks are recorded and transmitted. Your students will get a chance to hear their invaluable ideas. For the schedule of live webcast of events, visit http://www.cdeep.iitb.ac.in/events.html Sometimes, a series of seminars are also transmitted. Your students will thus have access to additional instruction. Information about the schedules for such programmes is available on our website http://www.cdeep.iitb.ac.in under News and Announcements. If the Extended Live Classroom mode is taken, your institute can replace one of your courses with that of IIT Bombay. In fact, students can write the same quizzes and exams as IIT Bombay students.

Get a Student Interactive Terminal (SIT) of ISRO

In order to become IIT Bombays Remote Centre, it is necessary to first install a Student Interactive Terminal (SIT) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in a classroom so that EDUSAT-transmitted courses can be received in your institute. The total package of equipment, installation charges and service fees for three years is to be paid to ISRO. A typical set contains a personal computer with H/W and S/W, projector, camera, audio amplifier with speakers and cordless microphone, and UPS. A classroom with reasonably good acoustics is required at the receiving end.

The following information has to be sent to us to process your case for having an SIT at your institution.
1. Name and address of the person in whose name ISRO should make out the invoice.

2. Name and address of the person applying to the state government for obtaining permission to use satellite services. 3. Name, designation, address and contact (phone, email and fax) details of a person for day to day interaction with IIT Bombay. 4. Exact location where the SIT will be installed (building, street name, etc.). This information is to be sent to cdeep@iitb.ac.in and it will be forwarded by us to ISRO, Bangalore. Become a Remote Centre of IIT Bombay Once an SIT is installed at your institution, you can receive totally free of cost all the courses transmitted through EDUSAT from IIT Bombay. It is also possible to interact live with IIT Bombay instructors.
However, to receive these courses in different value-added modes, an MoU needs to be signed between IIT Bombay and your institution so as to become our Remote Centre (RC) (the form is available at http://www.cdeep.iitb.ac.in/Live_edu/RC_form.html). For this purpose, a centre registration fee of Rs. 1 lakh is payable to the Registrar, IIT Bombay. After becoming a Remote Centre, you can participate in all the available value-added modes.

Remote Centre Guidelines Once your institute becomes a Remote Centre of IIT Bombay, please see that the following guidelines are followed.
If a course is being viewed by your students, please enroll every participant, in the free and value-added modes, by giving them a unique enrollment number. Kindly send us this information, along with the details of the concerned Course Associate, at the beginning of the semester in the format specified here so that we can make Moodle available for registered students. The Course Associate is also requested to stay in constant touch with the course instructor at IIT Bombay.

The Remote Centre must connect 15 minutes before the actual lecture session to make sure that the video and audio connections are working fine. At all times during the lecture, please make sure that a person is available if we need to contact him from our control room. It is mandatory to switch on the camera during the lectures for better two-way interaction between your students and the concerned faculty member at IIT Bombay. Seeing the students attending the lectures will not only inspire the instructor but will allow him/her to better attend to students doubts. When the Remote Centre is providing certification in the Credit Mode, it will perform all the grading and evaluation of participants. Remote Centres may seek advisory support regarding question papers, etc, from the concerned IIT Bombay instructor. It may also be certified that the course delivery was fully/partially supplemented by Prof. (name) at IIT Bombay. In case you are experiencing any technical difficulty with the equipment, please call 1-800-4252888. This is a toll free number of the Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) Control Room in Bangalore.
It is up to the Remote Centre to see that more courses are taken and that more number of students participate per course. It is difficult to offer courses, taking the services of a local Course Associate, if there are less than 10 students per course.

Kindly go through our newsletter Reachout. This contains current happenings as well as description of courses transmitted through CDEEP. Please go to http://www.cdeep.iitb.ac.in/Reachout/ to read the newsletter online.
