ICOLPH Contract Classes

When: Wednesdays after school, 1:30 2:30 p.m., beginning Wednesday, September 7th. Classes will run 11 weeks, ending on November 16th, 2011. Where: Contract classes will be held at the Immaculate Conception campus. Why: To offer enrichment opportunities to students at ICOLPH through extended learning classes immediately following early dismissal on Wednesdays. All instructors will fulfill and clear the Seattle Archdioceses background check process, and the Called to Protect/Safe Environment class. Cost: varies per class, range $50-55 per student, plus supply fee for some classes. ICOLPH School Contract Class Descriptions Minuit to Winuit Grades 2,3,and 4 Class cost $50 6 student minium,15 student maximum Instructor: Dan Murphy Class Description: Loosely based on the TV show, Minute to Win It, each weeks program will feature teams of two or three students competing in various skill-based activities designed to promote movement, exercise, and hand-to-eye coordination, as well as concentration and teamwork. The activities will be drawn from various sports, including soccer, basketball, ping pong, baseball (using plastic whiffle balls), volleyball, floor hockey and racquetball. Although many of the challenges utilize skills related to those sports, there will be other challenges, relay races and just goofy events (like juggling) where kids who arent as athletically inclined can still participate and be competitive.

Latin Grades 3-8 Class cost $50 5 students minimum, 15 students maximum Instructor: Rodman Reynolds Materials needed: Latin for Children, Primer A, Classical Academic Press, 2009, consumable paperback, $22.95; notebook, pencil. Class Description: Beginning Latin language class. Suitable for new and continuing students.

French Grades 4-8 Class cost $50, plus $10 book fee 15 student minimum, 20 student maximum Instructor: Hilda Merrick, retired French teacher (St. Mary Magdalen) and ICOLPH School contract instructor. Materials needed: notebook and pencil Class Description: Beginning French language class. Suitable for new and continuing students.

Basic Finance Grades 3-6 Class cost $50 4 student minimum, 10 student maximum Instructor: Grace Martinez Class Description: Through instruction, games and discussion, students will be educated on the following topics: Money History (Where does money come from?, value of money, taxes, etc.); Spending Money (checkbook, debit & credit cards, bills, budgeting, credit, etc.); Earning Money (allowance, small business, etc.); Saving Money (goals, banks, compounding interest, etc.); Investing Money (stocks & bonds); Loans (interest, loan fees, etc.); and Donating to Charity.

The Art of Etiquette Grades 1 5 10 students minimum, 15 students maximum Finishing School

Class Description: Etiquette and manners are the key to building positive friendships and strong selfesteem. This fun, hands on workshop teaches introductions, handshakes and communication skills, telephone etiquette, basic table manners, personal care and posture. And since one of the first social settings that children encounter is being a guest, learning how to be a gracious guest, guest of honor or host, are skills they will use lifelong. Boys and girls will learn about creating a party, invitations, being a great guest and host, practice meeting and greeting others, giving and receiving gifts and how to create their own thank you notes. Art Creative Ceramics Grades K-4 Class cost $50 per student, plus $10 supply fee 12 student maximum Instructor: Tori Bean Class Description: Students will create fun and functional art pieces using the medium of clay. Projects will include, but are not limited to: coil pots, pinch pots, plaques, picture frames and mobiles. Students will also have an opportunity to paint pre-made pieces such as vases, figurines, and special gift items.
