WHS Sport
Welcome
WHS CROSS COUNTRY
Captain: Nick La Roche Welcome to the very 1st edition of the Wanganui High School Sports E- Newsletter. Over the last month or so I have been working with the Sports Prefects to get this concept up and running so it becomes a regular part of the Sport Prefect role with in the school. We have also started up a Wanganui High School Sport page on Facebook. This has sports photos, recent videos of school events and sports news and event notices via any links that relate to the school or students. Take a look and LIKE the page. It is updated by the Heads of Sport. It would be good to get 1000+ people linked up to this and using it on a regular basis. A big thanks goes out to all our sports coaches and managers that took away teams to Tournament week competitions. Each year we like to have a Thanks Coach/ Manager function and this years event is on the evening September 24th. The same evening the All Blacks play France, so invites are currently being distributed. Please keep this evening free and come along. Not long after this we will be having our annual WHS Sports Awards function. This year the evening is scheduled for 27th of October Week 1 Term 4. At this event we recognise all our outstanding sporting achievements of the year and award sporting colours and trophies. The summer sporting codes start very soon and Summer Sport registration forms are available from the Student Centre. These are for Cricket, Tennis, Touch, Softball, Waka ama and Athletics. Thanks to the students who have contributed to the 1st edition. They have done a great job! Please enjoy reading and if you would like to contribute to the next edition please see the Sports Prefects.

On June the 17th, the Wanganui High School team travelled down to Ashburton to compete in the NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. We flew out of Palmerston North into Christchurch and from there, drove to Ashburton to check out the course we were to run the next day. We stayed in a little town called Methven about 20 minutes out of Ashburton. Our team consisted of about 15 runners (both senior and junior), Mr Cornaga, Mrs Calman and two parents. Saturday was race day. We all ran as hard as we could and placed to the best of our ability. Not one runner felt as though they could have gone harder; it was a very successful day. Personally, this was the first year I had ever run in the national event, or even local interschool race. I was overwhelmed at how many students really do compete in this event. The thundering sound of feet pounding the ground as the starter gun goes off is something I will never forget. It was also a very cool experience seeing all the different schools and their tents; some of the schools there I havent seen at other secondary school tournaments. I had an amazing weekend bonding with team mates and loved the challenge of the race. I now have a better understanding of the love people have for this sport.

Wanganui Collegiate School did a tremendous job in organising the event, providing the great attraction of the USA Eagles rugby team to officially start the meet and get photos taken. Wanganui High School had seven teams enter the relays with some marvellous results. The senior boys team placed 3rd in the senior boys 2.2km race. Nick La Roche proved his experience and ran an exceptional first leg to put the team in a comfortable 5th place after a 6.58 effort, La Roche then tagged Sam Hopper for the second leg who ran a solid effort in placing the team in 4th position after running 7.16, Hopper went on to tag Joel Martin who ran a 7.38 and impressively placed the boys into 3rd place, after a hard anchor leg Jack Stewart finished in fourth in a time of 7.31. The senior boys came 3 rd in their age group and 4th overall; a truly extraordinary effort. The Senior A girls team placed a pleasing 4th over the 2km course with the fastest time going to Georgia Black in 7.36, Georgia also picked up the fastest time for the Senior B girls team. The year 9 boys ran hard in their age group and claimed 5th place, with the fastest time going to Joshua Parker in 7.48. The year 9 girls proved strong with a solid effort from Sophie Couper who ran 7.41 to claim the teams fastest time and they too finished in a respectable 5th place. In the under 16 age group, the girls placed 5th with the fastest time going to Rosie Smith in 8.31. The Under 16 boys placed 6th in their 2.2km race with a satisfying time from James Wright in 7.37. The results are a true indication that Wanganui High School has a solid group of athletes ready to compete in the December New Zealand Secondary School Athletics championships in Wellington. We wish the team luck for their future events.

Members of the WHS Cross Country team went to this years event at Linton Army Camp.

WHS AEROBICS 2011
What is Aerobics?
In this sport you get to dance to music and do exercises while judges award you marks for how well you do them. But you can't just do any old dance. Your routine must be made up of at least 10 different exercises. Sport Aerobics is the ability to perform continuous complex and high intensity movement patterns to music, which originate from traditional aerobic dance. The routine must demonstrate continuous movement, flexibility, strength and utilization of the seven basic steps, with a high degree of perfectly executed elements of difficulty. Aerobic Movement Patterns are combinations of aerobic dance steps together with arm movement patterns, performed to music to create dynamic, rhythmic and continuous sequences of high and low impact movements. he competition performance area is 7m x 7m for all events. The floor area is wooden with a slight cushion and springy feel to it to help provide lift to the a thletes.

AEROBICS TESTS YOUR STRENGTH, FLEXIBILITY, ENDURANCE AND CONFIDENCE AND YOU CAN ALSO SHOW OFF YOUR PERSONALITY.
The 2011 Aerobics Team
Donna Caird (Coach) Chloe Caird (Captain) Sarah Butters Olivia Huijs Brooke Caird Emma Thomas Georgia Carroll. For years now, Wanganui High School has been fortunate enough to take away a young group of talented and dedicated aerobics girls to the New Zealand Secondary Schools Gymsports Championships. This is an event where secondary schools from all over New Zealand come together and bring what they are made of to the event and give it their best shot for themselves, their team and for their schools. This year we had a smaller team of dedicated girls. In previous years we have been unable to compete in any team performance competition and bring back the New Zealand Team titles like usual, due to lack of numbers. Fortunately again this year, thanks to Mark Cornaga and Donna Caird, we were able to make this trip happen and to return with pleasing results.

Competitors Profile
Chloe Caird (Captain) Age: 17 Level: Junior A How long have you participated in this sport? This is my 3rd year competing as a competitive Aerobics Gymnast. I was previously a competitive Gymnast representing Wanganui for 8 years.

In 2011 WHS had 2 Volleyball teams, Senior Boys and Senior Girls. We played on a Wednesday night down at the Jubilee Stadium in the local Wanganui League. We started in March and finished in June. The competition was very tough and both teams did well. The Senior Boys came 3rd in Pool A, Division 2 and the Senior Girls came 3rd in Pool B, Division 2. Although many seniors are leaving both teams there is a strong line-up of juniors to fill the large shoes left by the seniors. Volleyball is a great sport to play at high school, either competitively or socially. The team atmosphere is great to play in and I will definitely miss playing for WHS.

WHS VOLLEYBALL 2011

By Eleanor Hogan

The 2011 season for the Senior A girls, had been summed up as a roller. The team currently plays in the Womens League on a Thursday night. The first round robin saw the girls place 1st out of 6, again with the 2nd and 3rd round robin. Zone 3 Regional Basketball In the first week of the holidays, from Wednesday 20th of July to through to Saturday 23rd of July, the girls team participated in the Zone 3 Regional Basketball competition. Unfortunately they did not do as well as they had expected, even though they placed one place higher than the previous year. The 11 teams participating saw them split in to 2 pools, one consisting of 5, the other consisting of 6. The WHS girls, was in a pool with Scared Heart (New Plymouth), Upper Hutt, New Plymouth Girls High School, St Marys College Wellington and Mana College. The first game for the tournament saw the girls have an unfortunate loss against Scared Heart, going down 59-52. However this loss certainly brought out the best in the girls, and they played their absolute heart and souls out in their next game against last years regionals 2nd place getters, Mana College. They won their second game 62-51.

WHS GIRLS BASKETBALL

The girls 3rd game was against a very highly ranked New Plymouth Girls, of which they were not expecting to win. They went down in this game 64 -41. The 4th game for the girls was do or die. With this game, the girls had to win it by approximately 6, in order to get into top four of the region. If the girls were to lose this game it would put them at 9th in this competition which meant they were bottom 3 of the competition. Only 2 points were in this game. 2 points resulted in a complete and utter upset bunch of Wanganui High School girls, after they lost the one crucial game 56-54 to St Marys College. The competition was now out of the girls league, and national title was well out of the girls hands. They were extremely upset by this result. However, the following morning, the girls managed to be back to themselves with a massive blow out, winning against Upper Hutt College 75-35. From this round robin, the girls had to play Fielding High School in order for places to see whether they ended up 9thor 10th. The girls won this game 48-36.

VOLLEYBALL PROFILECOACH
Name Miss A. Fairhurst How long have you played Volleyball for? Played/playing 14 years so far. Coached 5 years. Achievements Represented Waitara High School at NZSS 8th place (good effort considering we had to qualify back in those days). Represented Massey University 2003 University games. Why did you start playing/coaching? I started playing because it was a very sociable sport and got to spend more time with friends. Learnt the skills pretty quickly and enjoyed developing my skills and knowledge for the game. I first started coaching in my first year at High School, I wanted to promote the sport and start developing young players. Best thing about Volleyball Watching skilled players

VOLLEY BALL PROFILE CAPTAIN

Senior A Girls Name Georgia Purcell How long have you played Volleyball for? Played 7 years so far. Why did you start playing? I thought I would try it and see if I liked it. I ended up loving it and have carried on ever since. Best thing about Volleyball? Being part of a play. Best feeling having made dig, set, spike and then the opposing team not being able to receive it.

Wanganui League Returning back to the Wanganui league, on Thursday 25th August, the girls were playing for 1st and 2nd place against Ole Skool, after an easy win by approximately 30 points in their semi-final. The girls knew that this final would be challenging considering they had 4 valuable team members away for netball down in Wellington, due to it being Tournament Week. During the second quarter the girls pulled away from Ole Skool by 14 points. However this lead was short, taken away from them in the 3rd quarter, when a strong 3 point shooter was making the girls pay the price. Once again the girls were unsuccessful with the game that mattered the most, unbeaten all season in this league, the girls went down 54-57. The girls played well considering the circumstances.

Small-Bore Shooting
Small-bore shooting runs from beginning of Term 2 to the end of Term 3 and is nearly over for 2011. A few changes are proposed for next year. In 2012 we want to go back to a dedicated WHS shooting night. While we enjoyed the competition with City College, we would like to promote a "have a go" theme amongst WHS. People who might not normally shoot a rifle could come to the range and for just $5 they could try target shooting with a 22 calibre rifle. It is very safe with fully trained instructors. We would like to encourage more international students, girls and a wider cross section of the school have a go at the sport. Students could try it just the once, attend regularly or come along when they can. No club fees apply.

This year four players will be leaving the team after 4-5 years worth of Basketball for WHS. A big thank-you to coach Marie Joseph from these girls Brierley Smith, Siobhan Wooding, Aly Allison and Ngakuira Osbourne, and from the remaining 7 players in the team.
Captain: Name: Brierley Smith What made you want to start playing? I wanted to get involved in a sports team and basketball sounded pretty appealing because it was pretty straight forward to learn the basics and looked really enjoyable. What do you enjoy most about the sport? The thing I enjoyed most about playing was the team atmosphere, the satisfaction of improving and winning as a team, and winning as a team, and the opportunity to go to tournament week. Also its indoor, and its a fast game, and its really high scoring so games get exciting and close!

WHS DUATHLON 2011

On the 14th of August 2011, The New Zealand Duathlon Championships collaborated with the National Secondary School Duathlon Champs. The course indicated was fast around the Motorsport Park in the Taupo outskirts. Wanganui High School had a total number of 13 participants including teacher in charge Gareth Wright. High School hopeful James Wright, in the boys14 struggled in the tough conditions, over the 2.5km runs and 10km cycle stages finishing 8th overall, a few places shy of what the aspiring athlete had set out to do. Sophie Couper was the first High School girl home in the girls14 finishing 11th respectively, after only being told late Friday she would be participating individually not in a team. High School struck luck in the team events collecting a total of 4 medals. In the girls16 and boy16 James Dorgan, Hugh Pawson, Ilish Graves and Mikaela Sullenburger all collected bronze medals.

COMING UP..
Now 24 September
In the under 19 titles Sam Hopper had a good run leg over the first 5km to hand over to Jack Stewart who stayed strong throughout the cycle, to overall together collect silver medals. However the best moment of the day was when the girls19 team consisting of Georgia Black and Katie ONeil collected Gold. Georgia had a good run in strong winds to change to Katie who had a superb bike leg to hand back to Georgia for a 2.5km run lap. The team is modest about their national placing and are hoping to defend again next year, along with High School having strong numbers returning for more pleasing results. Other results include Rhys Thomas 19th in Boys16, Gareth Wright in Mens Sprint 6th overall and 1st in age group category 25-29 and Nick La Roche 9th in boys19.
