REFLECTING THROUGH THE WEEK

Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. At the call to deny self, take up the cross, and follow Jesus, I respond with mere human thinking (God forbid, Lord!) when I I respond according to Gods way of thinking when I Ive experienced life coming from death when In the midst of the challenges and difficulties of faithfully following Jesus, I have experienced Gods loving embrace when

Second Collection for the Horn of Africa

On August 12th Bishop John Noonan wrote to the parishes: More than 12 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia because of what many are calling the worst drought in decades. This severe lack of rainfall has resulted in failed crops, deaths of livestock and critical shortages in food and water. There are parents whose little children have died, and children who have been orphaned. They are suffering from hunger, thirst, disease, and drought. The Holy Father, on several occasions, has asked Catholics to respond generously to the desperate needs of our brothers and sisters in East Africa. I am asking you to take up a second collection to support emergency relief efforts in the Horn of Africa the weekend of August 27, 28. Our collection will support the relief efforts provided by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) on the ground in East Africa.

FROM OUR PASTOR

As the school year begins once again, our lives immediately become busier. The summer was quiet, but for me meetings at diocesan and parish level now start up; parents have to check homework and prepare uniforms and lunch boxes; and some of you may find yourselves distracted by a new season of T.V. shows. On top of that, iPhones and iPads keep people connected to an endless stream of information - often more than they need. In the midst of such busyness, how do we remember God? In confession and counseling people often admit that they have not prayed as much as they would have wanted; and its a problem I know myself: very often at the end of the day I regret that I did not give more time to prayer. However, we need to remind ourselves that quality of prayer is more important than quantity. One short prayer said sincerely is better than many said out of a sense of duty, without understanding or love. Father Francisco Suarez, the Jesuit scholar who was regarded as the greatest living philosopher and theologian of the early 1600s, declared when dying that he would willingly give all the many learned books he wrote, all his life's labors, for the merit of one Hail Mary prayerfully and devoutly said. The same idea is expressed in the devotion of The Golden Hail Mary - the commitment to say just one Hail Mary with love and care, especially at the beginning of days when we know our minds may well be forgetful of God. One fervent Hail Mary with love and thought said is better than volumes of prayers poorly read. If time and ones duties prevent a long prayer, just say one Hail Mary with fervor and care. The Golden Hail Mary which from the heart springs the greatest of blessings from Mary it brings; and we never will know till before Marys throne how that daily Hail Mary brought us to her home. If we dwell on the words, Mary, Mother of God, do we not honor Jesus, her Son and her Lord? And pray for us now and at the hour of our death - that moment when spiritual foes will be met. Ah! that is the moment well surely need aid; and to Mary well turn, that sweet, lowly hand-maid. Be sure she will help you if truly you say one single Hail Mary- just one every day.

Hail Mary,
full of grace. Our Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

When you find that your day is too full, try the Golden Hail Mary. We can all spare thirty seconds, the time it takes to say the prayer through simply and sincerely. Pause to place your day in Gods hands and ask for the intercession of the Blessed Mother who is our friend and fellow Christian. She will keep us steadily on the path that leads to her Son.

HOW DO I BECOME A CATHOLIC?

Are you interested in learning more

about the Catholic faith? Would you like to become a Catholic? Do you know someone who may be interested?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a process of conversion and initiation in the Catholic Church as adults (anyone seven years of age or older) journey together in faith and share experiences while discerning Gods call. If interested in participating, please call the office. We will be happy to assist you on your journey.

OFFICE HOURS: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm MARRIAGE PREPARATION: Please contact the Church Office to schedule a meeting with Father Augustine. You need to allow six months for the preparation process and it would help us if you could obtain new baptism certificates before the meeting. We can also help with the convalidation (blessing) of a civil marriage and sometimes with the annulment of a previous marriage as long as the civil divorce is complete.

DO YOU HAVE A CHILD, SEVEN YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER, WHO HAS NOT YET BEEN BAPTIZED CATHOLIC?
Once a child reaches the age of reason (seven), the child is brought into the Church just as an adult isthrough the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Following this process of preparation which lasts about a year, the child is fully initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. In order to have a child baptized Catholic, at least one parent must be Catholic. If you are considering having your childage 7 or olderbecome Catholic, or if you have any questions, please contact Sister Marie at the parish office, 407.293.9556 ext. 121.

BAPTISM PREPARATION is offered to parents and

godparents and is required prior to scheduling a baptism. Please register for the class by calling Deacon Paul Volkerson at the Parish Office (407.293.9556 extension 110). Classes take place on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm.

ADULT CONFIRMATION
You may not realize that to be a godparent or a sponsor, you must first be a fully initiated member of the Church yourselfthat is, you must be baptized, confirmed and be free to receive Communion. If you are a Catholic who has never been confirmed and wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Noonan on November 4th this year, we will be running a course of preparation for adults in the weeks leading up to the ceremony - just four hour-long sessions. Contact Debby at the parish office ASAP to register. You will need to provide a baptism certificate and a marriage certificate if married.
