    AccordingtoaTidalTribuneanaly
    sisofthemostrecentdatataken
    fromthemorethan200public
    fouryearUniversitycampusesin
    thestatebetween2002and2009,
    the15weaponsreferralsrecorded
    inthe201011academicyearis
    upfrom0ayearearlier,andwas
    thehighestamountintheschools
    historyandthethirdhighestofany
    publicUniversitycampussince
    USCBbecameafouryearinstitu
    tionnineyearsago.
    ThemainsitesatClemsonUniver
    sityandtheUniversityofSouth
    Carolinaaretheonlytwowhohave
    surpassedthatnumber,recording42
    and17weaponsinfractionsin2005
    and2007respectively.
    Figuresfromotherschoolsforthe
    201011academicyearareex
    pectedtobereleasedbyOctober,an
    oIfcial Irom the U.S. Department
    ofEducationsaid.
    The oIfcial added that the DOE in
    the state is not anticipating a signif
    cantincreaseinoncampuscrime
    forSouthCarolinastwolargest
    publicinstitutions.
    HenryGarbade,USCBschiefof
    police,saidthatwhilethespikein
    thedataisdisappointing,thestatis
    ticsdonottellthewholestory.
    'We`re a rural University, which
    meansalotofourstudentsliketo
    go hunting, said OIfcer Garbade.
    'The problem with that is some
    timeskidswillbringwiththemtheir
    equipment,andforgetthatsomeof
    itisactuallyclassedasaweapon.
    AccordingtotheDepartmentof
    PublicSafetyshandbook,BBguns,
    airguns,hatchets,kniveswith
    bladeslongerthat2inches,cross
    bows and freworks are all con
    sideredweaponsprohibitedfrom
    campus.
    Althoughexactnumbersremainun
    clear, OIfcer Garbade said that pos
    sessionsofthesethingsmakeupthe
    lionshareofthereferrals,andthat
    onlytwicehaveincidentsinvolving
    actual frearms occurred.
    Both oI those times, which OIfcer
    Garbade says occurred 'about 3 and
    5yearsago,involvedtwodiffer
    entstudentswholeftgunsintheir
    automobilesaccidentaly,andwere
    notconsideredtobelifethreatening
    situations.
    Despitethis,USCBsDepartmentof
    PublicSafetysaytheyplantoshift
    toastrategyinthecomingyearthat
    handles less oI the reIerrals 'in-
    house,whichtheysaycouldresult
    inmoreoncampusarrests.
    'Weapons, any kind oI weapons,
    always worry me, OIfcer Garbade
    said.
    DeonneWhaley,directorofhousing,
    residencelife,andstudentjudiciary
    affairsatUSCB,overseestheap
    proximately500studentswholive
    oncampusandhandlesthereferrals
    oncetheyarereportedbyDPS.
    'On the frst oIIense we enter the
    studentintoajudiciarydatabase,
    givethemaformalwarning,and
    usuallyassignsomeformofcommu
    nityservice,Whaleysaid.
    'II the student were to Iace a sec
    ondoffense,theycouldfacebeing
    removedfromUniversityhousingor
    suspendedfromtheUniversity.
    Whaley,addedthattheschoolgives
    residentstheabilitytocheckinand
    storetheirhuntingequipmentina
    safeoncampus,andwantsstudents
    toknowandusetheseservices.
    'That`s one thing we could prob
    ablybedoingalittlebetter,letting
    ourstudentsknowaboutsomeofthe
    thingsweoffer,Whaleysaid.
