I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. Philippians 1:3-5
In the opening lines of the Book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul is overwhelmed with thankfulness and joy towards the Church in Philippi. This 1st century Church throughout Pauls missionary journeys had been faithful in giving financially and actively participating in the spreading of the good news of Jesus Christ. Much like the apostle Paul, Liz Gold and I are overwhelmed with thankfulness and joy for you, the body of believers who call Calvary Church home. Your faithfulness over the last 80 years as a church which consistently gives financially and actively participates in the spreading of the good news of Jesus Christ both here in Orange County and throughout the world has been absolutely incredible! The kingdom of God has been eternally impacted by the people of Calvary Church. From translating the Bible into the language of the Cajamarca Quechua in northern Peru, to spreading the Gospel in Mali, Africa, to mentoring elementary school students on Townsend St. in Santa Ana, California. Through your giving and participation, you have truly lived out this years Global Missions Week theme to Build His Church. The exciting news is that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is still as powerful and still as relevant as it was 80 years ago when God first birthed Calvary Church. We believe God is preparing us as a Church for some amazing opportunities in the future. In this latest issue of our Reach magazine, you will read about many of these opportunities. You will meet one of our newest missionaries who runs a ministry for HIV children in Kenya and share in the passion and excitement of our college students and young adults who recently served in Haiti; you will learn how you can be part of Calvarys plan this Fall to return to our roots in Downtown Santa Ana as part of our 80th anniversary celebration. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, settle into a comfortable spot and enjoy reading through this issue of Reach. Our prayer is that you will feel our thankfulness and joy coming through the pages and that you will be encouraged and challenged to continue financially giving and actively participating in Building His Church. Guest Speaker: Missionary Carole Sherman
Join us Saturday, October 8 at 6:30 pm as we hear from Carole Sherman, a Calvary Church Creative Access Missionary. This is a rare opportunity as Carole is not often on furlough in California. This evening will also include interviews with other missionaries visiting as well as a delicious meal. The seating will be limited to the first 250 people. There is no charge for tickets, but a love offering will be taken that evening. Tickets will be available in the Worship Center lobby starting Sunday, September 11.

Adrian is traveling all the way from Sri Lanka to share with us on Sunday, October 9, during our Celebration and Elevation services on what he means by this expression. The Founder and Senior Pastor of Kithu Sevana Ministries based in Sri Lanka, Adrian entered Christian Ministry in 1979 as the first local-language ministry worker for Youth for Christ in that country. His work took him to remote and marginalized communities, giving Adrian a deep conviction and passion for reaching them for Christ. Kithu Sevana Ministries is a missions-oriented church planting organization with a burden for reaching those unreached by the gospel. Following the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004, Adrian began many different projects to help those affected in Sri Lanka, including starting orphanages for young boys and girls, building over 250 replacement homes for those who lost theirs and providing food, bedding and basic necessities to thousands. All these actions are done first in order to share Christs message. Adrian is the Vice President of Partnership Development for Asian Access and a Member of the Governing Board of the Colombo Theological Seminary, Sri Lanka. He was awarded the title of Deshabandu by the Government of Sri Lanka in 2007, one of Sri Lankas highest civilian honors, for his work amongst the poor. Sri Lanka is a small island off the southwest coast of India and home to 20 million people who have endured unparalleled hardship. Once known as Indias Pearl for its natural beauty, it is now called Indias Teardrop.

This was the statement that Calvary Church made as it was officially incorporated as a church on October 25, 1931. 80 years later, we as a church are still focusing on living this statement out. We invite you to join us for Calvary Churchs 80th anniversary celebration over the last weekend in October. Go online to calvarylife.org/rooted for a full list of these events. A Reach highlight of this weekend will be on Saturday, October 29, from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, as we will return to our roots and be a service to the people of our community. We will organize a team of volunteers that morning to help refurbish the original Ebell Club where our church first met in 1931 to 1942. We will also have several teams helping clean-up and care for the immediate neighborhoods on 6th and French St. where Calvary met from 1942 to 1962. Volunteers will have the opportunity to sign-up for a specific assignment on the first three Sundays of October before and after services. Mama Sweetie and the Discover to Recover Center

Most of us are familiar with stories about HIV/AIDS orphans in Africa. Its not uncommon to find children less than twelve years old becoming the head of the household and caring for their younger siblings because they have lost both parents to AIDS. Unfortunately, becoming the head of the household is somewhat misleading, as there is usually no house. Most of these kids end up living on the streets. Relatives of these children are likely to turn them away because of financial hardship, the AIDS stigma or because they simply dont care. It is a sad, dark and hopeless picture that HIV/AIDS paints for countless children in Africa. However, there is a small shining ray of hope called The Discover to Recover Centre (DTRC). Located in Kitale, Kenya, the DTRC was founded in 2005 by Patricia, and her late husband, Francis Sawo. The DTRC is a sanctuary that offers food, shelter and schooling to HIV/AIDS orphans. But theres more to caring for the children victimized by HIV/AIDS than just providing for their basic needs. The DTRC provides a unique combination of unconditional love and guidance with a spirit of hope rooted in basic Christian fundamentals that lift the burden of hopelessness associated with HIV/AIDS. Patricia draws her strength and resilience from an unwavering faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and then combines that strength with the familys personal experience of living with HIV/AIDS. That knowledge has turned into a mission of love and compassion for those without hope. Although some of the children living at the DTRC are themselves HIV positive, Patricia knows from her own experience that this is a disease that can be managed. An HIV/AIDS diagnosis isnt an automatic death sentence.

It isnt the AIDS virus that kills people. The killer is the stigma, despair and absence of community support that accompanies this disease.

After contracting AIDS from her husband, she decided to be a survivor instead of a victim. Patricia Mama Sweetie is best described as a real parent to these children. It is not unusual to find the DTRC kids just down the road at her humble residence enjoying a meal, doing school lessons or playing games with the family. When needed funds turn up short, it is not uncommon for Patricia to do without so that the DRTC children can get what they need. In short, the DTRC is more than just a place to exist. Its a real loving and caring family. Patricia Sawo says that it isnt the AIDS virus that kills people. The killer is the stigma, despair and absence of community support that accompanies this disease. She is spreading the message of hope through an outstretched hand of love to those in her community. Patricia is just one person, reaching out where most would be overwhelmed by the scale of the problem. Yet, this one woman has provided hope, love and practical help to 150 children that would otherwise have been neglected by the world. Patricia has the right vision. From us she needs encouragement and support. As of June, Patricia Sawo is Calvarys newest National missionary. We plan to take a Short Term Team to Kitale, Kenya in early 2012 to deliver school supplies and other needs for the children at the Discover to Recover Centre.

LEON, MEXICO Arts on a Mission - Mid February Don and Janie have requested that artists use there gifts and talents to uniquely touch the House of Refuge through landscaping and mural painting. Artists, gardeners, landscapers and those with a heart to lend their talents are needed for this team. TIJUANA, MEXICO January Family friendly YWAM house building trip. In the past 5 years close to 500 people have participated in building homes over one weekend.

BORACAY, PHILIPPINES The Beavers and the Atienzas would love to have a team help with the childrens feeding sites and English tutors at the new Boracay Academy for adults. Some construction work is still available to finish the Center, which is already in use. Both the island and the hearts of the people who live there are beautiful. COUNTY MAYO, IRELAND Calvary Missionaries, Larry and Kathy Dunne, are excited to have you join them as they evangelize door-to-door during the day and do sports ministry with youth in the evening. This is a great opportunity to use your evangelism skills. Limited to a team of 8, Age: 20 and older. Must be able to walk long distances and stand at length. INDONESIA Not your typical missions trip. Prayers, building relationships, breaking down negative stereotypes, tieing into a long-term ministry plan, while having fun. Activities include surfing, hiking, spelunking, and sports for 6-10 people on each two week team. Adult, fairly fit applicants will be considered by application only. MOMBASSA, KENYA Serve Missionary Martha Pontier by helping to build a security wall at her resort/respite for missionaries. This time may also include opportunities for village work with youth in this beautiful location by the white sand and ocean. GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR Serve with Missionaries Pablo and Rebecca Pazmio as they work with the local church in this coastal tropical setting. Depending on the size of the team, this trip could include some building projects as well as an English club and/or VBS. College age or older on this trip of 8-12 people.

GLIMPSE of

HAITI

Our team arrived early in the morning of Tuesday, June 28, to

Port au Prince Airport in Haiti. It was quite an eclectic group; college students, young adults, and a handful of us over 40 folks, all led by Calvarys College Pastor, Jon Eshleman, and Paul Gates of Kids Around the World. There were 23 of us in all, and no one from Calvary had ever been to Haiti, so we werent quite sure what would be waiting for us there. After clearing customs, we were escorted out to the parking lot where Aaron from Nehemiah Vision Ministries (NVM) was waiting for us with our ride. Half asleep from the overnight flight, we piled into the large tap tap and made our way through the hot, bumpy roads of Port au Prince, passing buildings that had been reduced to rubble and tent cities full of people displaced from the 2010 earthquake.

For the next three days, the guys on our team dug holes, poured cement and, thanks to a bit of ingenuity on their part, constructed the playground despite missing a few of the necessary tool bits. Mike, whose comfort zone is building, felt God pulling him to join the girls during the day as we led the kids who lived in a nearby village in a VBS each morning. We made the bumpy drive to a little village filled with small children who waved and called to us as we drove in. By the time we grabbed our supplies and got out of the bus, there were already 50 or 60 kids anxiously waiting for us to get set up, and over 100 when we actually began! We sang songs, told Bible stories while team members acted out the various roles, did crafts and played games with the kids. By the time the VBS group returned back to NVM, we were tired from the work and thirsty from the heat, but many of us joined the guys and worked on the playground. We finished each day with a devotional and singing worship songs together. On Saturday morning Pastor Pierre of NVM was the emcee for the playground dedication. Hundreds of kids and their families waited patiently as a full message of salvation was given. Most of them had never even seen a playground, and Pastor Pierre was excited about how they would not just have a chance to play, but to learn how to share with one another. Our team handed out white plastic bags filled with the food packets to the kids who were at the playground dedication. These packages of food were created and donated by Calvary Church during our Food for Haiti Project back in March, and shipped with the playground. We were fortunate enough to spend some time worshiping with the Haitian congregation on Sunday morning before we headed to the airport. Even though we couldnt speak the same language, we were all able to worship the Lord together in our hearts. It was an amazing week. God had touched all of our lives as well as the lives of the kids in Haiti in powerful ways!

CLEAN WATER
Millions of people around the world, children and adults alike, dont have clean water to drink, let alone for bathing or cooking. In many areas, its impossible for Bible translators to work because water is so unavailable.
No one can live without fresh, clean water. Where translators are able to work at all, their work is slowed down by the ceaseless quest, the desperate need, for clean water. This is far more than just a problem for translation teams, however. Accessing clean water is a life-ordeath struggle for multitudes of the people we are trying to reach with Gods Wordand many are losing this battle. Its hard to share the hope of the gospel when theyre dying of physical thirst. said one of Wycliffes volunteers. In 2008, Wycliffe Associates launched Operation Clean Water to provide a solution to the problem that plagues many Bible translation projects and prevents new ones from starting. Wycliffe Associates mobilizes skilled volunteers with a passion for Bible translation and brings them into the missionaries communities. The teams provide innovative solutions to water problems, fixing existing water systems, providing the expertise to build new ones, and training the communities to maintain them. They seek to develop water supplies at existing translation centers and bring clean water to isolated communities as a first step in starting a new translation. As our missionaries work among people who have so little that life

can easily become overwhelming and nearly impossible without a strong dependence on God. Its hard to grasp a concept of poverty until you meet a real person who doesnt have food to eat or clean water to drink. As translators demonstrate Gods love by meeting physical needs of the people, their hearts become more open to Gods message of hope through His written Word. That was our task on Sunday, August 14th as a bright shiny yellow school bus showed up at Calvary during our Sunday morning services.
In just a few weeks this bus would be filled with kids heading off to their first day of school. On this special Sunday however, volunteers from Calvary filled every seat on the bus with over 200 backpacks and enough school supplies to fill an entire 84 passenger school bus, generously donated by the congregation. All of the school supplies will be distributed locally this fall to two low-income Santa Ana Elementary Schools; Lowell Elementary and Garfield Elementary. The backpacks will be shipped and distributed globally to orphan children in Africa thru Discover to Recover (page 7) and Acres of Love. It is our prayer that as kids receive these donated supplies, it will serve as a reminder to them about just how much God loves and values each one of them as a precious child of His. There are lots of ways that you can show Christs love to kids in Santa Ana beyond donating school supplies. Check out some of the ways you can serve Santa Ana in REACH on page 23, including tutoring, mentoring and even creating a temporary safe home for a foster child.

Preschoolers
give up their Snacks
Little kids with big hearts bless their local community.

If you spend any time with preschool aged children, youll understand how much they love snack time. Youll also come to realize that small kids are capable of having huge hearts for people in need. This past spring, Mary Jane Edwards, Calvarys preschool-kindergarten coordinator, was brainstorming ways to teach kids about sharing and giving to others. Using 1 Timothy 6:18 as their theme verse, Mary Jane and her team in Calvarys Bounce Blvd. began to Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share. Pre-school and kindergarten Sunday morning classes were asked to give up a portion of their snacks, donating their food to the Orange County nonprofit, Giving Children Hope. The donated snacks would be used for Giving Children Hopes Weve Got Your Back program which provides weekly nutritional snacks to homeless children in Orange County. Our kids were so excited to give up their snack for other children who could really be blessed by it. These will be part of the conversation in applying the Culture meets Scripture process to the Christmas season.

VOLUNTEERING I I I I I PRISON
TO GO TO Chances are, you have never had Go to prison on the top of any to-do list on a Saturday! Yet a group of men from Calvary Church recently did just this very thing, traveling from Orange County to Chino State Prison (CIM). What would possess someone to voluntarily go to prison? These men were part of our Angel Tree Ministry under the umbrella of Prison Fellowship, a ministry founded by Chuck Colson and staffed by our very own Calvary member, Steve Cummings. Prison Fellowship (www.pfi.org) exists to, To be a reconciling community of restoration for all those involved in and affected by crime, thereby proclaiming and demonstrating the redemptive power and transforming love of Jesus Christ for all people. Over the past 3 years, we have had the privilege as a Church to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ to incarcerated men and women in prison through buying Christmas presents for their children living in Orange County. Many of these children havent seen their mom or dad for quite some time and the Christmas gift we purchase for them is the only gift they will receive from their incarcerated parent for the entire year. The men from Calvary spent an entire Saturday at the state prison, meeting inmates and processing their Christmas requests for their children. Many of these children will be among the 200 children we serve this Christmas as part of our Angel Tree project.

The Bible has a lot to say about how we should interact with our neighbors. The scriptures call us to love our neighbor (Luke 10:27) and promises God will be with us when we share the gospel with our neighbor (Acts 1:8).

Ground Rules:
Your prayer walk can be done alone or with a group, a one time thing or a daily/weekly occurrence this fall.

The Bible also tells us to seek the good of our neighbors (1 Corinthians 10:24) and to speak honestly with our neighbors (Ephesians 4:25). All of these commands point to the fact that God really cares about who we live near and next to.

Exceptions:
If you live in an unsafe neighborhood and do not have a way to get to a safe area to walk, perhaps you can go on a prayer drive instead! Be safe!

This fall at Calvary Church we want you to develop a deeper love and heart for your neighborhood by going on a prayer walk through your own neighborhood, apartment complex, dorm building or other immediate area of residence. On your prayer walk, each time you pass a residence or business, pray for those who occupy that space. If there is anything about the residences outside appearance that could help make your prayers more specific, feel free to use that. But in general, pray for the relationships among occupants, relationships between occupants and their communities (especially with Christians), and for the Gospel to spread rapidly in your neighborhood. The time or distance you spend walking and praying is up to your discretion.

Take C:
Our prayers do not fall on deaf ears. As Moses said to the Israelites, What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? (Deuteronomy 4:7). We serve the same God, and He hears every prayer offered in faith.

Equipping you to share your faith

The world is at our door step literally. Look around you. Here in Orange County you will find people from every country of the world. And with the world coming into our neighborhood, they are bringing with them their religions. We see this as well in new buildings going up Buddhist and Hindu temples, Muslim mosques What we know about these people can many times be summed up in what we know about their religious beliefs and customs. At Calvary Church we want all of our members to be well versed in understanding what other religions believe so we will be better equipped to share the true message of Christs salvation with them. Join us as we begin our new series of classes starting Sunday, September 11 at 8:45 am in the Library (enter from south side of Samsvick Chapel). Throughout the year we will study Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, and Animism as well as how to share our own faith and testimony.

They work alongside a Thai pastor and his church to assist and mobilize the church to plant new churches in the surrounding area. Karl has extensively studied the Thai language and culture. DONATING PURPOSE WITH A

As Christians we are called to be generous givers of our time, resources and finances. In the Fall of 2011, there will be a new convenient way at Calvary Church for you to practice generosity through donating new or gently used clothes, shoes and non-perishable items to our local non-profit partners. We will welcome a brand new 50.6 cubic feet donation bin to our Church campus. The donation bin will be located behind the worship center in the rear parking lot and will be available 7 days a week to receive donated items. These secured items will be sent to the donation facility of the Orange County Rescue Mission in Tustin on a biweekly basis and distributed to individuals and families in Orange County with extreme needs. We will also use the donation bin throughout the year for supply drives for Birth Choice, The Sheepfold, Olive Crest and other local nonprofit outreach events.

new maRRIEDS lifegroup hit a hole in one!

This past August, KidWorks and the City of Santa Ana hosted the 4th Annual Townsend Street Fair. Calvarys New Marrieds LifeGroup used this opportunity to reach out to those around them by hosting a golf putt-putt booth at the fair. They served over 1,000 adults and kids and passed out Calvary Church gospel booklets to each participant who stopped by the booth. It was an awesome day of serving our community!
