STEADY PROGRESS AT THE CCC The Salem Courthouse Community Center received a devastating blow from Irene, but dedicated volunteers have been working daily to assist with the extensive cleaning process. Between 8-12 workers have been present each day to contribute to the effort, and those close to the organization are grateful. One of the youngest, Pascia Offield, a second grade student at Washington Academy, re-lettered the CCC activity sign to offer encouragement to Salem residents. The sign reads life is still good in Salem, and is prominently displayed. While substantial progress has been made, some of the new fall classes which were to commence in the coming days have been re-scheduled. Due to flooding of the Hop Gaah Kung Fu Academy in the CCC basement, Sifu Steven Nacua has requested that students of Tai Chi and Kung Fu keep in touch with the CCC to learn when and where the fall session will commence. Pottery studio manager, Jordan Becker is very encouraged by the work completed in the studio, and feels the children and adult pottery classes will only be delayed by 1-2 weeks. The new schedule is as follows: Childrens Pottery Classes (Ages 9 and up) After School Unwind ~ Tuesdays, 2:30 4 September 27 Instructor: Eva Fitzgerald $75 member/$85 nonmember Beginning Pottery Wheel for Kids ~ Mondays, 2:30 4 September 26 Instructor: Eva Fitzgerald $75 member/$85 nonmember Clay Creations ~ Thursdays, 2:30 4 September 29 Instructor: Tara Hughes $75 member/$85 nonmember New Classes for Fall Sunday Clay ~ Sundays, 3 6 September 25 Instructor: Jordan Becker $150 member/$160 nonmember An Introduction to Pottery ~ Mondays, 6:30 9:30 September 26 Instructor: Jordan Becker $150 member/$160 nonmember Intermediate Pottery ~ Tuesdays, 6:30 9:30 September 27 Instructor: Jordan Becker $150 members/$160 nonmembers Open Studio ~ Wednesdays, 6:30 9:30 September 28 Instructor: Jordan Becker $150 members/$160 nonmembers. The First Baptist Church, Hoosick Falls is hosting a noon luncheon that addresses this question Thursday, September 22nd with missionary Daniel Chetti as guest speaker. Daniel and his wife Sarah live and work in Beirut, Lebanon. Daniel teaches at the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary, which has students from Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Sudan. He also serves in the International Church in Beirut , as well as a Sudanese Congregation there. Sarah ministers in the seminary library and to women in a local prison. When war broke out in July 2006, the Chettis decided to remain despite bombs dropping nearby and offer help with food and supplies to civilians in the turmoil. They have been able to identify with the people of this resilient and diverse region, and share the love and peace of God through Jesus Christ. Students they have worked with have a vital role among their people. The First Baptist Church, located at 80 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY invites all interested in hearing of the power of the Gospel in this strategic area of the Near East. There is no charge for the noon luncheon, but there will be a plate for an offering. Please call the church office 518-686-5779 by Monday, September 19th indicating name and number planning to attend, so that we may have adequate provision. RAPTOR AWARENESS DAY Live Birds of Prey descend on Glens Falls City Park on September 17 to highlight the Friends of the IBA Juried Art Show! Informational tables offer your chance to see the raptors up close between programs during this free Friends of the IBA event co-sponsored by the City of Glens Falls and Washington County Tourism Association; GlensFallsRegion.com is the presenting business sponsor. Exhibits and activities by Friends of the IBA, Audubon Society of the Capital Region (test your grassland bird identification skills on their electronic bird board!), Agricultural Stewardship Association, ClearLight Permaculture Design, Lake George Land Conservancy, Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park and Washington County Tourism Association highlight natural and agricultural resources of the region...

IRENE DEALS A DEVASTATING BLOW TO THE CCC The Historic Salem Courthouse complex including the Courthouse Community Center, sustained serious flood damage due to the White Creek surge caused by Irene. There was 4-5 feet of water raging through the Courthouse basement destroying the pottery studio, damaging newly restored activity rooms, and the extent of the damage to the heating system is still being ascertained. The Youth Activity Barn used for Lunch, Learn & Play was covered in thick mud. The Shoppe Off Broadway thrift shop basement flooded as well. The swiftly moving waters totally destroyed the impressive Courthouse Community Garden which was on the verge of being harvested. The Hudson Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call for help early Monday morning and spent over 8 hours pumping out the buildings. The Town of Salem does not have flood insurance for the complex, and other means are being sought to fund the necessary restoration. Consequently, the pottery studio will be temporarily closed until the funds are raised to replace the ruined equipment. The teamwork of the volunteers who have been at the Courthouse daily to assist with the cleaning has been inspiring. Donations, both monetary and additional volunteer hours to assist with the cleaning process have been solicited. The Shoppe remains open as does the CCC. Executive Director, Donna Farringer, has said we may be a bit battered and bruised, but we are definitely not defeated. Anyone interested in assisting may visit the website at www.salemcourthouse.org to obtain details.

The Schaghticoke Fair Fundraising Committee is currently converting a section of the Freihofers Building into a Veterans Hall. We are seeking donations to purchase 3 additional flagpoles to place in front of the current Friehofers Building at the Fair for a total of 6 1 for each branch of the service and one for the American flag. We have funds for three. We are looking at purchasing binders, page protectors, frames, etc. to display information on our Rensselaer County Veterans. This project has just gotten under way and with interest from the community will hopefully go forward. Jody Luskin (518) 663-8156 Kim Micklas (518) 663-9970 Schaghticoke Fair Fundraising Committee

Family Owned Business for 40 Years. M-F 7-5:30; Sat. 8-5; Sun. 9-4

Two Chicago Stories BOTH TRUE: STORY ONE Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago. Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder. Capone had a lawyer nicknamed "Easy Eddie." He was Capone's lawyer for a good reason. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie's skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time. To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends, as well. For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day. The estate was so large that it filled an entire Chicago City block. Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocity that went on around him. Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly.. Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars, and a good education. Nothing was withheld. Price was no object. And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to teach him right from wrong. Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was. Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn't give his son; he couldn't pass on a good name or a good example. One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Easy Eddie wanted to rectify wrongs he had done. He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al "Scarface" Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some semblance of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great. So, he testified. Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago Street. But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay. Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion, and a poem clipped from a magazine. The poem read: "The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. Now is the only time you own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still."

Blinkys Random Thoughts

STORY TWO World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Commander Butch O'Hare. He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific. One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet. As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward the American fleet. The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenseless. He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger. There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the fleet. Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent. Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible, rendering them unfit to fly. Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction. Deeply relieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier. Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return. The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his fleet. He had, in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft. This took place on February 20, 1942, and for that action Butch became the Navy's first Ace of W.W.II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Medal of Honor. A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His home town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today, O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man. BUTCH WAS EASY EDDIES SON.
