Starting out successfully with SOA

SOA Pilot Proof of Concept

Objectives
The implementation of a serviceoriented architecture (SOA) as a single project is not realistic; instead, it must follow an evolutionary approach. In a gradual, step-by-step process, business processes and IT architecture are aligned with services to be executed within several thoroughly planned projects. Entering the world of SOA with a pilot project offers a solid foundation for learning about the required methods and technologies and for verifying the expected results of SOA higher business and agile IT. Choosing the optimal business process is required for the implementation of a successful SOA pilot. It should enable the measurement of the advantages of an SOA, such as reusing implemented services. In turn, the business and IT departments are aware of the positive aspects of the pilot.
Implementation of an SOA showcase with a clearly defined scope and timeframe Selection and modeling of an appropriate real or future business process Demonstration of basic SOA characteristics, such as the reuse and orchestration of services Examination of the integration platforms necessary for an SOA pilot Integration of already existing services Service-enabling of existing business functionality

Approach
The individual steps for implementing an SOA, along with the ideal procedure for future SOA implementation, can be evaluated via a reference process. Mapping the reference process in consideration of service orientation via common modeling tools Service analysis and design: Modeling the requirements of a service, the data cut, the granularity and the data ownership Modeling all relevant services from a business and a technical perspective and alignment with the applicable IT landscape Implementation of new services Transformation of the business process to BPEL (Business Process Execution Language) and installation on an appropriate runtime platform

SOA Pilot Proof of Concept

Benefits
With the implementation of an SOA pilot, a company can explore SOA concepts and methods within a clearly defined scope, using its existing IT landscape and specific process requirements. Consequently, companies are able to verify their intended SOA initiative regarding technical feasibility and functional effectiveness. The pilot project builds confidence in service orientation, offering a well-founded basis for SOA strategy decision-making and safeguarding the investment in future SOA projects.
