THE EFFECT OF STRESS ON STUDENTS IN HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE

Through personal experience, we each found that students who were in college are likely to report feeling stress. College stress is one of the reasons that a low percentage of students actually go on to graduate because stress can have an impact on a students academic performance What could be the reasons behind these alarming stress levels?

One of the main reason is that the new surrounding environment that the new student have to face when entering the college. They will experience a new feeling as they will start their new life with sort of new thing at their new study place. College students, especially freshmen, are a group particularly prone to stress due to the transitional nature of college life. They have to get into a new routine of going to school, and change can be very difficult. They have to navigate through classes in a new format while living away from all the comforts of parents. A college students life usually consists of attending classes, long hours of studying, working as a part time job and having a social life. It is a constant struggle for everyone who is trying desperately to make him or herself into a success. The amount of stress experienced may be influenced by the individual's ability to effectively cope with stressful events and situations. However for those who cannot withstand the high pressure will surely feel worried or uncomfortable about something. Besides that, the transition from a family setting to a college environment is a major step for the student to deal with. Students can feel isolated compared to the family setting or familiar surroundings. Many students believe that the college life is filled with less rules and more carefree days. The reality is that there is much more responsibility and may feel inadequate about solving real life problems and issues which they have never been faced with before. At this stages, the students need to be an independent person where they need to solve the problem on their own. This where the student can feel stress as they are apart from their family and does not have the support from them. College life may also lead to failure and rejection, which can make the student feeling vulnerable. This can lead them to take the drug which can totally ruin their lives. This happen due to the excessive amount of stress that the students need to face.

Another reason is the academic problem that the college students have to deal with. Pressure to earn good grades and to earn a degree is very high. The pressure expecially come from their family hoping their child can be success at the college. The hard work that studies demand at college is more significant than in regular schools and high schools. In the area of academic problems more than 90% of college students were stressed by such factors as tests and examination. Fail to perform well in the examination will affect the student mentally in order to perform well in the next examination. If the grade is not good enough, it can lead to disappointment. Many students experience setbacks and failures. Apart from that, the student must decide what they are going to study later on. A course of study is a deciding factor of what they will be doing for the future. One of the greatest influences of academic pressure is what grade a student receives in any given class.

The third reason is that the pressure from peer group especially among new students. The new students does not know each other well, so they do not know what are their friend behave. This may lead to the stress in finding a suitable friend for them. Besides, the sudden lack of parental support and neighborhood friends would create a huge vacuum in students life. student will feel that they are alone especially when they cannot adopt well with new environment. In a study of Canadian high school students, two of the three categories of stressors mentioned by students from all types of academic tracks involved stress asscociated with family and friends.

In conclusion, student should know how to manage their stress to avoid the stress from becoming a major problem to them. Stress that are well managed will give an excellent advantage to them. College campuses should offer a stress management program for those student so that they can handle their stress more effectively.
