September/October 2011

Presidents Message
September is here. School is back in session. The days are getting shorter. August was quite a month with the earthquake and hurricane all in one week. We had a very hot summer with too many days in the 100s but fall is around the corner. In a few weeks, the leaves will change and we will all be out there raking leaves and getting ready for another long cold winter. Its that time again. September is the start of our annual membership drive. See article from Pat Stout, Membership Chair and Kathleen Lynn, our new block coordinator. Our next Membership Meeting will be on Tuesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m at Thoreau Middle School. At the meeting, we will announce the winner of the 2011 Edward P. Day Award, and approve the 20112012 budget. Our guest speaker at the meeting will be Mark L. Keam, our new delegate for the 35th District, which includes residents living in parts of Oakton, Vienna, Dunn Loring and Tysons Corner. Ken Quincy

DLWCA MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The Annual Dunn Loring Woods Civic Association Membership Drive will officially begin September 15th. Kathleen Lynn, the new Block Coordinator for Membership, has been or will be calling all former Block Captains to ask them to serve again this year. For those blocks without a Captain, she will be calling those of you who live on that block to see if you would volunteer to canvass your block. What better way to meet the neighbors. The 2012 Membership Drive is a very important one as this is the year we publish the DLWCA Directory. Membership in the Association is open to all residents, owners and renters in the development. Block Captains are asked to verify that all information is correct and readable so that we do not have any mistakes when we publish this directory. Any mistakes we do have we will have to live with for two years and the incorrect phone number is the worst mistake we can make. Please take the time to fill out the registration form and return it with your $15.00 check. Thank you in advance for joining the Association. Pat Stout, Membership and Kathleen Lynn, Block Coordinator

September 22 is Car Free Day

Car Free Day, Thursday, September 22nd, is a worldwide event that encourages all of us to rely less on cars and instead use alternatives such as transit, bicycling, walking, teleworking and rides-haring. By using these methods, residents, employees, students, homemakers and seniors throughout the Washington metropolitan region will help reduce their carbon footprint and de-crease traffic congestion. Take the pledge and go Car Free or Car-Lite and be entered into a raffle for a chance to win great prizes such as an Apple iPad, a bicycle, Washington Nationals Tickets, Capital Bikeshare Memberships, SmarTrip Cards and more. Sign up to take the pledge at http://www.carfreemetrodc.com/pledge-to-carfree.php

Mark L. Keam Delegate Mark L. Keam represents the 35th District in the Virginia House of Delegates, which is considered the oldest continuous legislative body in the modern world, with roots dating back to Jamestown in 1619. The 35th House District is entirely within Fairfax County, and includes over 80,000 residents living in parts of Oakton, Vienna (including the Town of Vienna), Dunn Loring and Tysons Corner. In his first campaign for public office, in June 2009, Mark won a competitive fourway primary election for the Democratic Partys nomination. He went on to win the general election in November of that year, thereby becoming the first Korean American and the first Asian-born immigrant to serve in the Virginia General Assembly. As a freshman Delegate, Mark serves on the House Finance and on the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committees. Additionally, he was appointed by Speaker of the House Bill Howell to serve as a member of the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission, which the General Assembly created to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Mark was also appointed by Governor Bob McDonnell to serve on the Leadership and Policy Team of the Virginia Prisoner and Juvenile Re-Entry Council, which was established to improve the correctional system in Virginia. Bring your neighbor and come to Thoreau Middle School to meet Mark Keam on September 20.
