5.- TIME EXPRESSIONS


The time expressions used with the Present Perfect include: since, for, how long, ever, never, yet, already,
just,

Since: it is used to state a starting point.


e.g.: I have known him since 1990.
For: it is used to express duration.
e. g.: I have lived here for eight years.
How long: it is used in questions to ask about duration.
e.g.: How long have you worked here?
Ever: it is used in questions and it goes between the subject and the verb in past participle.
e.g.: Have you ever travelled abroad?

Never: it is used to make a negative statement and it goes between the auxiliary verb have/has and the
verb in past participle.
e.g.: I have never travelled abroad.

Yet: it is used in questions and negations and it usually goes at the end of the sentence. Yet shows that the
speaker is expecting something to happen.
e.g.: Have you posted the letter yet?
e.g.: I have written the letter, but I have not sent it yet.
Already/Just: they are used in affirmative sentences, and they go between the auxiliary verb have and the
past participle.
Already is used to say that something has been done recently, it does not matter if the issue has not been
done very recently.
e.g.: Lunch? No thanks. I have already eaten. When did I eat? It does not matter.
Just is used when something has been done very recently
e.g.: Have you packed your suitcase? Yes, I have. I just have packet it.
