eekes & Thomas’s foundingpartners bring many ingredi-ents to the table includinginvestment banking, qualityassurance, marketing, business man-agement, and yes, catering too, andthat interesting mix has resulted incontinental food that, uncharacteris-tically, doesn’t cost much. For abouta couple of years, their outlets wererestricted to the Jayanagar/JP Nagararea, but now they have expanded toseven locations across Bangalore, theKoramangala outlet having beenadded just a couple of months back. What adds to the uniqueness of thisventure is a set of philosophies thatseem intrinsic to it – usingbiodegradable or reusable packaging, striving to include the community aswell as traditional/village economyin the business, and building part-nerships with NGOs.
Appetiser:
There’s no dearth of op-tions; you have crostinis, bruschet-tas, and croquettes, among others. The Sautéed Mushroom soup with itscreamy consistency worked wellwith a dash of pepper. The Basil &Tomato wasn’t bad either, a thintangy version. At Rs 35 each, andserved piping hot in glasses, thiscould help you depart from the by-two norm. The Jalapeno Poppers wasthe best of the veg starters, crispy onthe outside with a gooey spicy cheesefilling. But the Mushroom Crostiniwith finely chopped, pan smearedmushrooms on a toasted baguettehad enough of olive oil and cheddarflavour to make it a preferred itemtoo. The Tomato and Black Olive Br-uschetta turned out to be a bland of-fering. We didn’t find any flavour init and it didn’t find any favour withus. Among the non-veg starters, theStuffed Rice Balls was most appreciat-ed for its texture and the mildly spicychicken and cheese filling. The Sala-mi and Bell Pepper Mousse justabout passed muster as the tapenadehad the flavour right, but missed theconsistency. The Chicken Crouquetswas the most disappointing dish inthis section, and though the crumbfried texture worked, the filling, that was supposed to be made of amix of Indian and Italian herbs reallydidn’t deliver.
Entree:
The Pepperand Garlic Risot-to got the burntgarlic flavourjust right, andwasn’t stingy onthe cheese, givingit a smooth, butthick and creamy fin-ish that was complemented well bythe sesame garnishing. The GrilledBasa Fish with Lemon Butter Saucewas the pick of the non-veg maincourse dishes and the juicy bonelessfish with its mildly sour sauce wentvery well with the herb rice. TheGreen Chilli Spinach Pasta was areasonably good dish with a creamysauce and blanched spinach, but itsspicy billing wasn’t really justifiedas it was the olives which provedthe dominant flavour. The CajunGrilled Basa Fish in itself was an ex-cellent dish, with the fillet and thepaprika and Cajun rub working welltogether, but it was let down by theherb rice which should’ve been afiner version. The Spaghetti MeatBall Pasta had meat balls made of chicken mince that was too hardand spaghetti that was a bit toocrispy. The Portuguese Chicken wassupposed to be a spicy and tangyrendition of the original recipe,so we did make allowances forthat, but it turned out to beover-spiced and the mush-rooms were conspicuous bytheir limited presence. TheStuffed Chicken crossed the roadfrom tender to hard and spoiledthe spinach and mushroom filling. There were quite a few items un-available, including the HoneyGlazed Lamb that I wanted to try.None of the drinks were available, but since it was a Friday night, wewere able to make do with waterand high spirits.
Afters:
The menu does have a collec-tion of desserts listed includingchocolate brownies, tiramisu, mangocheese cake and so on. But we werefirst told that only the MangoCheese Cake was available and evenbefore we could digest that, we weretold that we had lost that option too.
In all:
Value for money fare in quitean awesome ambience, especially if you are fond of music, that wouldsum up the experience. The pricingof the dishes and the portion sizesensure that you can try many dishesand feel that you’ve had a heartymeal. However, the non-availabilityof dishes weakens the Veekes &Thomas offering a tad.

FLAXSEEDS CAN HELP CUT BREAST CANCER RISK BY 40 PER CENT
EATING A DIET rich in flaxseeds can help cut the risk of dying from breast cancer later in life by 40 per cent, anew study has claimed. Researchers at the GermanCancer Research Centre in Heidelberg found that foodsincluding seeds, vegetables and wheat contain specialplant compounds, called phytoestrogens, which kill off cancer cells and prevent secondary tumours by stop-ping the growth of new blood vessels. Among the mostimportant phytoestrogens are the lignans which arefound abundantly in flaxseeds, the researchers said.Once in the body, they said, these phytoestrogens at- tach to female sex hormone oestrogen and are thought to help protect against cancer. For their study, the re-searchers analysed blood samples of over 1,000 womendiagnosed with premenopausal breast cancer over a three year period. They found that women with higherlevels of enterolactone in their blood had their mortalityrate dramatically reduced by two fifths compared towomen with the lowest levels of the same substance. The results also showed that high levels of enterolactonealso protected against the spread of cancer and second-ary tumours. The researchers claimed phytoestrogenshelped curtail cancer both because of its hormonal prop-erties, as well as by killing off cancer cells and prevent-ing the growth of new blood vessels. According to the re-searchers, the study also gave a clue as to why Asianwomen are less frequently affected by breast cancer.Their soy-rich diet contains large amounts of another type of phytoestrogens called isoflavones.
THE FIGHT TO STAY AFLOAT
It would have been easy to just get frustratedor take pity on myself but I had made up mymind that come what may, I would not let thedisease bring me down. What was worse forme was that I was away from my sister anddear grandparents and my close friends. Thismade me feel quite lonely. Unfortunately, I hardly received any kind of psychological counselling, which I feel is soimportant in the treatment of cancer patients. In the US, counselling is so much part of therecovery process but sadly here, it is rarelyoffered. I also recommend that hospitals shouldprovide patients the opportunity to interactwith others like them, so that it gives themhope that they are not alone in their struggle. In my case, my biggest motivating factor wasthat I wanted to be independent and get backto normal life. My biggest priority was my stud-ies and future. To stay away from frustration, Iwould keep browsing on my laptop and readbooks, I even did some online courses duringmy treatment. I would keep surfing the net andinteract with my friends through social net-working sites. This also helped me talk aboutthe disease and spread awareness about it. Later, I connected with people on Facebookwho, like me, had been diagnosed with Ewing’ssyndrome. This helped in the recovery process.I vowed to take better care of my health andjoined a gym to strengthen my muscles. I alsostarted doing yoga. Positive attitude is the onlyway you can beat a disease like cancer and it isessential to keep your mind occupied with con-structive things. What helped me was a single-minded focus on getting better and moving on. Now my treatment is done but I keepgoing for follow-ups and meanwhile, I havestarted doing a computer programmingcourse in Bangalore.
