"If the Church's agenda is not The Kingdom agenda, it's the wrong agenda, no matter how good it looks or how successful it appears. Christ said He would build His Church, but He told us to seek and advance His Kingdom. We focus on the Kingdom, and He'll take care of His Church." T. Allen Robburts +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Shoulder To Shoulder #589 ---- 3/23/09 Title: "Biblical Revival -- Part Four (Revive What?)

My Dear Friend and Kingdom Builder: Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ from a Spring-like southwestern Missouri where the "revival" of nature is raising its head. Jonquils and Daffodil's are blooming in abundance, Pear trees are laden with blankets of blooms, Forsythia is ablaze in splendor, Tulips and Iris' are poking through the ground, and the Redbud trees are beginning to show hints of deep pink. I've successfully traversed another birthday ("syemdesat adeen"), and rejoicing in the goodness and blessings of the Lord. I trust that today you are keenly aware of at least a few of the multitudinous ways in which God is pouring out His favor and blessings upon you. He is just simply, "way cool!".

This 'N That: + A friend recently shared some very helpful information concerning how to deal with anti-Spam filters. You may find that legitimate letters you send may get blocked by someone's filtering system and end up in their junk file, making you wonder why they never replied. If you happen to send out newsletters and find some of your recipients never receive them, it may be because of something you're doing that makes your newsletter look like Spam to the filters. My Canadian friend, Greg Slade, sent the following link, http://www.wilsonweb.com/wmt8/spamfilter_avoidance.htm, which I found to be most helpful. As a result, I've made some changes in my own newsletters. Feel free to share this link with others, and may I suggest that you read through it carefully so you can possibly reduce unwanted blocking. + I've recently added three outstanding websites to my long list below. You might like to take a look at them. They are . . . www.biblos.com -- EXCELLENT Bible study tools and resources. www.bibletraining.com -- EXCELLENT pastoral training global opportunity source. www.dota.net -- AMAZING Bible training materials via PDF downloads and radio programs in several languages.

Revive What? I didn't get started writing this letter to you until Saturday, and Sunday afternoon was so incredibly beautiful . . . sunny, breezy, and in the mid 70's, . . . that I came very close to resenting having to write. I'd have much rather settled down in a comfortable chair on our deck and simply enjoyed the beauty. Believe it or not, there's something beautiful about the raw appearance of woodpiles against the backdrop of naked trees, lush green cedars, and a blue sky accented by wisps of clouds on their way to another horizon. The Sap Suckers and squirrels scamper up and down the awakening trees while the

chatter of Finches, Chickadees, and the Tufted Titmouse are interrupted by the occasional distant bark of a dog. It's a lot easier to sit and listen and contemplate than it is to write under such circumstances. So, my mind and my concentration need to be revived. Sunday afternoon as we drove home from church services and lunch with friends, a totally unexpected question came to mind ---- "Bob, if you're going to write again about revival, just what is it that you think needs to be revived?" Normally we assume that the church needs to be revived, or we individually needs to be revived. However, that deals with the "who", but not with the "what". I've already written about who needs to be revived, and the circumstances indicating why such a deep move of God among His people needs to take place. Is it possible that we may be longing for the wrong things to be revived? In order for there to be a true revival and reconstruction in life, there are certain "things" that need to be revived . . . and for all practical purposes, this is "reviving" for which we are responsible. These are not God's responsibility alone, but most of them instead require our initiative. Before we can be revived, before the Church can be revived, before nations can be awakened, other things need to be revived and brought back to life and prominence. For example, . . . + Revive the Ways of God: One of the factors that give rise to our wanderings away from the Lord in the first place is that of forgetting His ways. God Himself made it clear that, ". . . My thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways My ways," declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isa 55:8-9). Seldom does any Christian, much less any church, choose to walk in the ways of God. While professing to believe the Word of God totally, doing things our own way which is generally the ways of the world, we expose the lie that we claim to do it according to His ways. For example ---- we live on credit rather than cash because we trust the credit card companies and the banks more than we trust God. We try to coerce and manipulate people to our services using slick gimmicks because we trust them more than we trust the drawing power of the Holy Spirit and the attracting power of the character of Christ shining through us. While the Bible tells us that the ways of God are the ways of lovingkindness, holiness, longsuffering, patience, sacrifice, a servant spirit, humility, and unconditional love, we choose to revel in shallowness, selfishness, self-serving and self-promoting energy of the flesh. Such a pathway always leads downward and away from the God of our salvation. It never brings us closer to Him. And He will never accept our justification of such conduct simply because it reaches a few souls. While He may graciously accept the souls that come to Him, He will never reward us for the ways we used if they are contrary to His. When we think of Revival, we immediately think of God's instruction to Solomon, usually concentrating on II Chron 7:14. However, we sometimes forget what God told him in I Kings 11:38. Solomon had turned away from the Lord and was in need of repentance, return, and revival. God rebuked Solomon, and told him the way back ---- '"Then it will be, that if you listen to all that I command you and walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight by observing My statutes and My commandments, as My servant David did, then I will be with you and build you an enduring house as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you." In this case, God is dealing both with personal and national revival. If we are to experience the refreshing wave of the presence and activity of the Lord, there must be a revival of His Ways. "Turn away my eyes from looking at vanity, And revive me in Thy ways" (Ps 119:37). "Revive me according to Thy lovingkindness, So that I may keep the testimony of Thy mouth" (Ps 119:88). "Consider how I love Thy precepts; Revive me, O Lord, according to Thy lovingkindness" (Ps 119:159). "For thus says the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, "I dwell on a high and holy place, And also with the contrite and lowly of spirit In order to revive the spirit of the lowly And to revive the heart of the contrite" (Isa 57:15). May God grant us the willingness to revive His ways . . . and then obediently walk in them. + Revive the Works of God: There is something about seeing the evidence that convinces people. Jesus told His disciples that you can tell the real from the false by the fruit . . . by the results. He told them, ". . . My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work" (Jn 4:34). He went on to say, "I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me" (Jn 5:30). Still more emphatically, He declared, "For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me" (Jn 6:38). Remembering the works of God quickly reminds man of the sovereignty, power, justice, and compassion of God as opposed to the selfish and inadequate works of his own strength. The Psalmist wrote, ". . . That they should put their

confidence in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments . . ." (Ps 78:7). The prophet Habakkuk had a divine encounter with God that led him to confess, "Lord, I have heard the report about Thee and I fear. O Lord, revive Thy work in the midst of the years, In the midst of the years make it known; In wrath remember mercy" (Hab 3:2). Because He knew something of God's track record of how He operated, the prophet was able to plead for national revival in behalf of Israel. He knew that the works of God needed to be restored, and that only then would Israel turn back to Him in restoration and renewing. This poses the question, then, of just how the works of God are restored. Throughout the three years Jesus trained His disciples by example, instruction, and demonstration, it seems they had the same struggle you and I often have ---- how to see in our lives the works and activity that we see in the life of our Savior. After all, we're supposed to see evidence in our lives that we are truly His. On one occasion, they approached Him on the matter ---- "They said therefore to Him, 'What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?'" (Jn 6:28), to which He replied, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent" (Jn 6:29). Herein is our first hint of what I believe is necessary for the works of God to be manifested . . . confident trust in Him. On more than one occasion Jesus rebuked His disciples for being unable to do what He had commanded them to do, simply because of their unbelief. It wasn't intellectual unbelief which rose out of skepticism over whether or not "it would work", but rather skepticism as to whether or not He was really Who He claimed to be and could do through them what He had done before their very presence. In other words, could He be trusted to actually use them as He had promised. Companion to the necessity of confidence in Him, is the matter of believing prayer. Look at what He said ---- "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to the Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it" (Jn 14:12-14). This statement about prayer came out of Jesus' declaration that His followers would equal and even exceed His works. Contrast that to the famous II Chron 7:14, and it is clear that prayer is essential both for revival, and also for the work of God to be released. In fact, as we noted in an earlier letter, revival is simply God at work in a fresh and anointed way. Dr. A. T. Pierson once said, "There has never been a spiritual awakening in any country or locality that did not begin in united prayer." In studying the history of revival from the Old Testament to modern day movements of God, prayer is directly linked to revival. Perhaps you've seen the film or read the transcript of J. Edwin Orr's presentation on "The Role Of Prayer In Spiritual Awakening" put out in the early 1970's by Campus Crusade for Christ. One great revivalist whose name slips my mind said, "Before we can pray for revival, there must be a revival of prayer." The works of God come not only through confident faith, but through prevailing prayer. Make no mistake about it ---- the works of God are released through a life of prevailing prayer. The promises of the Bible are too many to deny this truth. Finally, I believe the works of God are released when there is the presence of undeniable, unconditional, abandoned obedience to Him. He told His disciples, "If you really love me, it will be evidenced by obedience. If God has chosen to work through us, then what more logical way for His works to be manifested than through obedience? Even when He sent out the twelve, and later the seventy, they came back astounded that His supernatural power had been displayed as they obeyed Him. Whatever else may be the works of God, surely they include confident trust in Him, faith-driven prayer, and surrendered obedience. + Revive the Word of God: Again, we see the significance of returning to and reviving the Word of God in the earlier passage, I Kings 11:38, but in addition, we also see its importance in passages pleading for God's response in relationship to His Word, such as "My soul cleaves to the dust; Revive me according to Thy word" (Ps 119:25), "Hear my voice according to Thy lovingkindness; Revive me, O Lord, according to Thine ordinances" (Ps 119:149), "Plead my cause and redeem me; Revive me according to Thy word" (Ps 119:154), and "Great are Thy mercies, O Lord; Revive me according to Thine ordinances" (Ps 119:156). There is a fundamental truth we must always remember ---- God always operates within the framework of His Word, never deviating from it, never defiling it, never denying it, and never distorting it. Just as it is impossible to experience revival apart from prevailing prayer on someone's part, so it is with the plumb line of God's Word. His Word is both a plumb line, our protection, and our promise. It is first, the discerning and separating instrument ---- "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart" (Heb 4:12). It is also our primary weapon for battle against everything that stands against revival ---- " . . . And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Eph 6:17). The Word of God is our assurance ---- "For as many as may be the promises of God, in Him they are yes; wherefore also

by Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us" (II Cor 1:20). It is through these promises that we know we have His touch of refreshing and restoration day by day ---- "Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust" (II Pet 1:2-4). Finally, God's Word, personally breathed into reality by His Spirit, is of great benefit ". . . for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness" (II Tim 3:16). It is obvious that, if you want to experience the reviving and renewing presence of God through a mighty visitation of power, it must be according to His Word; therefore, returning His Word to a place of primacy is imperative. Immersing yourself in the Word of God is a guarantee that your soul will be renewed and strengthened . . . and perhaps much more. + Revive the Wisdom of God: Yesterday, one of the elders at our home church, John Wheeler, contrasted the wisdom of man, the wisdom of the world, and the wisdom of God as he preached from I Cor 3:18-23. We can assume with assurance that the world system and unregenerate man will engage in the foolishness of depending on human wisdom, but to often see believers conduct themselves in such a way is both shocking and unacceptable. Yet, how often do we find ourselves depending upon our own logic, reason, and wisdom to deal with spiritual matters. Far too often the Church relies on the wisdom of this world to deal with issues of the soul. How quickly we kowtow to the pressures of academia, the mumbo jumbo of the politically correct media, and the calloused vocabulary of the entertainment industry. It is through God's wisdom (not just godly wisdom) that we serve notice on a world system totally hostile toward God. In order for revival to come, and in order for the things of this world to be properly set in their place, we must allow God's wisdom to permeate us, saturate us, and motivate us " . . . in order that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places" (Eph 3:10). + Revive the Will of the Believer: Sometimes we forget that there is a driving desire . . . a craving, if you please . . . within the heart of every follower of Christ. David expressed it by declaring, "As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul cries out to You, O God!" (Ps In another of his songs, he expressed out a time of great distress and attack from both within and without, this ray of hope ---- "The humble have seen it and are glad; You who seek God, let your heart revive." (Ps 69:32). He seemed to understand that before he would experience liberation and restoration from the circumstances of his despair, he would have to be liberated from the spirit of despair that had overwhelmed him. Thus, in his own way, he reminded himself and now us that the heart of desperate desire must be rekindled. Not only must one acknowledge that there is indeed a light at the end of the tunnel, but he must also have a re-energized to begin moving toward the tunnel's end. Far too many believers have become so wearied and exhausted, disillusioned and deceived, that they have lost hope. When you lose hope, you lose heart; your incentive is gone, despair invades, and complacency settles down to simply endure and "do business as usual". As we look at what's going on in our world today, and especially in our own country, the will to pray for, seek, and pursue a fresh wave of God's presence and glory often die out . . . the Will is weak . . . or bruised . . . or overwhelmed . . . or even gone. Such wounded warriors must have the will to go on revived. I'm a newcomer to Facebook, and sometimes already wish I hadn't signed on. However, last week, I got a note from a longtime friend in Seattle, Phillip. A skilled pianist, Phillip played piano as part of a family worship team in a series of Bible conferences we held in the area. During a conference in Ballard, WA, the worship team introduced a song that was new to Jo Ann and me, "I Am A Wounded Soldier" written by Danny Daniels and popularized by the Vineyard ministries in the early 1980's. Daniels is an internationally known song writer, guitarist, and worship leader who has been ministering for more than thirty years. Here is what he penned those long years ago: I am a wounded soldier but I will not leave the fight, Because the Great Physician is healing me. So I'm standing in the battle, in the armour of His light, Because His mighty power is real in me. I am loved, I am accepted By the Saviour of my soul. I am loved, I am accepted And my wounds will be made whole. More than once I've sung those words, tears streaming down my face, as I have felt a renewed will to go on when I thought I could go no further. Perhaps you, too, . . . a wounded, weary, and worn soldier, . . . have had the need for your own personal revival of your will to continue following the Savior.

+ Revive the Walk of Holiness: If a believer is to ever experience a true renovation and renewing, it will begin with a change of heart that causes a renewing of mind that results in a change of direction. "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect" (Rom 12:2). You cannot have a change of action without first having a change of attitude. If you want a lifestyle of holiness, your attitude must change regarding sin, separation to the Lord, and the righteousness that has been counted to us, just as it was counted to Abraham. Holiness of life flows from an awareness of our identity in righteousness. "Behold, I long for Thy precepts; Revive me through Thy righteousness" (Ps 119:40). Perhaps no passage of scripture more succinctly confronts us regarding holiness before the Lord than does David's 24th Psalm ---- "Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood, And has not sworn deceitfully. He shall receive a blessing from the Lord And righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of those who seek Him, Who seek Thy face-- even Jacob" (Psalm 24:3-6). + Revive the Weapons of Victorious Warfare: We know that we are in a spiritual battle, but sometimes we fail to see the connection between warfare and revival. As Ezra recounted the bondage of their past, he reminded the people ---- "But now for a brief moment grace has been shown from the Lord our God, to leave us an escaped remnant and to give us a peg in His holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our bondage" (Ezra 9:8). And yet, how easy it is for us to forget that " . . . the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses" (II Cor 10:4) and that revival is almost always connected to warfare . . . either preceding, during, or following. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Eph 6:12). But, what encouragement it is to realize that warfare itself can become the incubator that births revival, both individually and corporately. "Though I walk in the midst of trouble, Thou wilt revive me; Thou wilt stretch forth Thy hand against the wrath of my enemies, And Thy right hand will save me" (Ps 138:7). It behooves us, then, because of the inevitability of warfare in proximity to revival, that we revive and put on the weapons designed for such an occasion ---- "Therefore, take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm" (Eph 6:13).

Finally: Sometimes we forget that revival comes when God's sovereignty, man's hunger, proper timing, and proper preparation intersect. While we can neither dictate when nor determine how and even IF revival will come, it remains our responsibility to revive what needs to be in place. We must . . . Understand the Ways of God, Cooperate with the Works of God, Align ourselves with the Word of God, Submit ourselves to the Wisdom of God, Renew our Will and hunger for God, Return to our Walk of holiness, and Take up the Weapons of Warfare. Just think about it, my friend ---- what would life be like if we accepted the ways of God, participated in His works, lived by His Word in every possible way, chose His wisdom over all others, chose to hunger and thirst for Him, willfully chose the paths of holiness, and did battle against everything that came against His nature and purposes. A mind-boggling thought! If we want to see true revival, then these things we must revive within our hearts. Imagine what could happen if we did. In His Bond, By His Grace, and For His Kingdom.
