SVKM The Parentage

hri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal is a Public Charitable Trust registered under (i) the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1960 No. 773 of 1934-35 and (ii) the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950 (Bombay XXIX of 1950) No. F 30 (BOM) 1953. The Mandal was formed in 1934 and commenced its activities by taking over the Rashtriya Shala, a school established in 1921 in the wake of the national movement. The school was later renamed "Shrimati Gokalibai Punamchand Pitamber High School". The school has now grown into a first class institute, imparting secondary education to about 2300 pupils. To mark the 25th year of its valuable service in the field of Primary and Secondary Education, the Mandal decided to extend its activities to the sphere of University Education. The long felt need for a Science and Arts college in the growing western suburbs of Mumbai was fulfilled by the Mandal by establishing "Mithibai College of Arts and Chauhan Institute of Science" in 1961. The Trustees of Matushri Mithibai Balashram and sons of late Shri Mohanlal Dayal Chauhan made this possible because of handsome donations. The spirit of transcending horizons has its genesis in the values that the Mandal has conscientiously practiced since the days of India's struggle for freedom. The values of patriotic fervor, selfless service and the spirit of indigenous enterprise serve as the guiding principles to all the institutions set up by the Mandal. During the last four decades or so the Mandal has established the following institutions including Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS).

SVKMs NMIMS
MIMS completed 30 years of its existence in the year 2011-12. The institution, established in the year 1981 as Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, began its journey offering Master's Degree Programme in Management Studies a course under University of Mumbai, with an intake of only 40 students and 4 full time faculty members. NMIMS has undergone a tremendous transformation since it commenced its journey in 1981. Today it stands as a large, imposing Institution (Deemed-to-be University) with eight specialized schools and off campus centers, with an intake of about 4000+ students and 300+ full time faculty members. From Bhaidas Auditorium, NMIMS has also moved to a large complex where it stands today as a landmark in Vile Parle - an affluent suburb of Mumbai. The journey traversed by NMIMS from 1981 to 2010 has been a long and fruitful one, with many a milestones along the way.

From an Institute to a University

1. In December 2006, the UGC granted the Deemed-to-be University status under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, vide notification No. F-9-37/2001-U-3 dated 13th January 2003 of the Government of India. NMIMS since then has taken major initiatives in terms of the programmes, curriculum development, international linkages, placements and students' development. Today the University is a truly globalized center of learning, providing its students a balanced exposure to practical and academic aspects of the industry.

Under Graduate & Post Graduate Programmes

The Vision of NMIMS is to be a world-class center of excellence in management learning and innovation, driven by social sensitivity and state-of-the-art technology. To better understand the industry requirements, we had conducted an in-depth study and had interactions with a cross section of industry leaders. These indicated that managers in the industries would be more effective with a strong foundation in the concerned engineering discipline. By integrating engineering and management in one single capsule to address a major industry requirement, MBA (Tech.) programme was launched by NMIMS in the year 2004, which was the first of its kind in the country.

13

The curriculum covers engineering courses in selected disciplines and the management courses relevant to that technology area. It is an integration of technology and management with the higher proportions of technological inputs in the initial stages and moving towards Technology Management in the later stages of the course. With the phenomenal growth of IT and Telecom Sectors all over the world, there are excellent opportunities in IT, Electronics, Computer and Telecom Industries, especially for those who undergo relevant education and training through well designed engineering programmes. NMIMS, a professionally managed, reputed university having the support of SVKM and its well known D. J. Sanghvi College of Engineering has launched relevant need based programmes in engineering at MPSTME for B. Tech., M. Tech. and Ph. D. levels. The aim of these programmes is to develop engineers with sound knowledge and skills, with ability to solve problems with creativity and innovations, who can work in a team and provide leadership to meet challenges in the area of design, development, operations and applications of products and services.

Dr. D. J. Shah, Ex-Principal of D. J. Sanghvi College of Engineering, having vast experience of Institutional Management, is appointed as Dean, Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering and looking after the task of development of programmes, faculty and infrastructure with the support of teams of academicians, industry experts and management groups. Student Speak
The Placecom has been crucial to our success in getting placed in such reputed companies. From the beginning of the academic year itself the Placecom, under the guidance of Prof.Nikhil Gala, has ensured that we'd be completely prepared for anything and everything. We had a battery of mock aptitude tests and group discussion sessions conducted till we were quite seasoned to take on any challenge that could be thrown at us. All this paid off big time when we saw some of the big names that had lined up Infosys, Accenture, HCL, Tech Mahindra.all raving for a piece of us thanks to the Placecom. They came, they saw..we conquered. By Vishakha Jain IT It was with trepidation that we fourth year students entered the final year, thinking about our future prospects. Our worries were allayed, however, when the placement committee came into the scene. The team of dedicated members at the placement committee ensured that I got a job profile that suited my needs and gave me great career options. Being part of the placement committee, I had the privilege to work with senior faculty members and support staff who impressed all with their professionalism. No student left behind was our motto and the Institute's management more than lived up to the billing. By Siddhi Raj Singh Bisht CS B NMIMS, being in the lap of nature gives us the best possible environment to indulge our minds at its full potential in studies. Various cells and departments like Professional and Personality Development Cell, Social Activity Cell, Computer Society of India, IEEE, and many more provide us the best platform and exposure to use our skills in the most creative manner. Timely lectures by guest faculties from Mumbai help us in learning even the most difficult topics very easily. In one line NMIMS can be described as the GURUKUL of 21st century where trend and culture go hand in hand. By Mayank Pratap Singh IT My journey in this institution has been full of wonderful experiences which I will always cherish. The quiet and ample atmosphere nurtures the growth of a person both as an individual and a professional. The trimester pattern ensures efficient utilization of time. Being in a residential campus, one learns to manage time and resources optimally. The infrastructure and facilities are excellent. The faculty is very supporting and always prepared to guide. The Dean is very open to suggestions and accessible to the students. In the end, I would just like to say that I owe a lot to NMIMS it's worth the name. By Janak A. Jain IT It has been a wonderful experience to be a part of this renowned institution which follows a unique system of education. The trimester system keeps us focused throughout the year and the faculty members provide us great guidance. Being a 24*7 Campus, recourses are all time available. The Labs are well equipped and the infrastructure is flawless. The place provides us calm and peaceful environment to study and to grow. I am thankful to this institution to make me realize my potentials and utilize my creativity to the best. By Radhika Sharde CS
