PRAYER LINES NEVER GO DOWN

Area residents recall 9/11 attacks on America
Manistee
Sept. 11, 2001, began like any normal day in our lives. My son, Eric, a teacher at Madison Elementary School, left the house early, leaving me to sit down to a cup of coffee and the morning news on TV. By nine oclock, what I was seeing and hearing terrified me beyond all of what I have lived through these past 80-some years. Ive endured the Great Depression, and I remember where I was when I heard about Pearl Harbor and Kennedy being shot. But this attack hit close to home. My son, Steve, was manager of the Embassy Suites Hotel located right across the street from the World Trade Center. That morning, as usual, he had taken the subway from Trump Place to the WTC station. Because Steve might be involved in danger somehow, I began to call his wife, Cris, and although I tried all day I could not get thru to her, as phone lines were out. At times like this you want to help, but there is very little you can do. However, prayer lines never go down, and I sure did a lot of that! Finally, late in the afternoon, Steve had reached home, white from head-to-toe from the dusty powder that had rained down on him as he helped evacuate guests fleeing the hotel. As it turned out, the hotel had been extensively damaged and would not reopen until two years later. Cris eventually called when she was able to with the wonderful news that Steve was OK, but she warned me that he did not want to talk about any of the events of that day. Several people he knew had been killed. For his actions that day, Embassy Suites honored Steve with a beautiful green marble plaque with inscription.

While I am sure he appreciated the thoughtfulness, Steve did not want anything on his desk or wall to remind him of that terrible day, so he gave the plaque to me. I have it proudly on display in my home. I am so thankful that all went well for Steve, and I continue to pray for the thousands of families not so fortunate to have had the favorable outcome as did our family.

On Sept. 11, 2001 Clyde and I were on our last leg of our three-month trip through Canada and Alaska. We decided to go to Jackson, Mich., to visit family before coming home. We had spent three days there and got up on the morning of Sept. 11 to head home. We wanted to see a wedding that was taking place on the Today Show

REMEMBERING: Residents
much to say, had the radio on and just listened in unbelief. When we arrived home we parked the rig and truck and came right in and turned on the TV. Still cant believe what happened, so many killed, and WHY???? We finally got a phone call from Bob, he had been flying that day but was then sitting in an airport. They were all told to get out of the air until further notice. He was going to rent a car and drive home. It was a day we will never forget. I can still see it all in my mind, how very sad a day it was.

OHare and drove for five hours to my mothers funeral. We could certainly feel with our own loss the pain and mourning of those lost on 9/11 and the impact it had on our country and Ireland.

that morning, so we fixed breakfast and sat back to watch. Matt and Katie were talking about the wedding when suddenly they said a plane has flown into one of the towers of the Trade Center. Pictures showed the tower and flames and everyone was stunned and wondering how that could have happened. It was hard to see and harder to believe. As we watched and listened we saw another plane coming toward the towers and then just flew right into it. We just couldnt believe what was happening. We had all thought the first plane must have had some problems and couldnt control where they were going but when the second one hit, it was like how could that have happened? Complete shock, fear and unbelief set in. The cameras then went to the ground, showed people running in fear, so much dust and debris, just still hard to picture and understand. We couldnt leave the TV, we were supposed to check out at 11 a.m. but never moved from the TV until finally around 3 p.m. Everyone in the campground stayed. Then we heard there was another plane that hit the Pentagon in D.C. and one crashed in Pennsylvania. The plane that went down in Pennsylvania was a United Airline plane. Clydes youngest brother Bob flies for United and we didnt know if he was flying that day or not. All phone calls to him and his family went unanswered. That evening we found out he was flying, but that it wasnt him. We were so thankful for that and still so sad for everyone who died. Clydes daughter lives in D.C. We were finally able to get her on the phone and they were all in shock but safe at home. It was good hearing her voice and knowing they were OK. We finally decided we should head home so we left and it was such an eerie ride. It was a beautiful day, but the stillness in the air was deafening. Silence everywhere. Traffic on the highways was next to nothing and what was out there wasnt driving fast at all. There were no birds or planes in the sky, no clouds nothing but a beautiful sun and brilliant blue sky. We also didnt have

WE WAITED AND WATCHED IN DISBELIEF By PHIL AND BONNIE KARASH

Wellston
My husband and I had a flight out of Grand Rapids at 10:30 a.m. for California. For some reason we decided to leave early in the morning instead of going the night before and staying in a motel closer to airport so we wouldnt have to worry about getting there on time. Anyway, we left home (we live in Wellston) probably around 6 a.m. and did not encounter any difficulties on the way, so we arrived at the airport shortly after 8 a.m. We got into the line for the registration desk, as this was before you could print your boarding pass at home, and it moved slowly forward. When we were about fourth in line things slowed down, but we still inched to the front of the line. We heard people coming into the line murmuring about something that they had seen on TV before they left home but we didnt really pay that much attention as everyone was very calm, even the people behind the registration desk didnt show any need for concern other than that they kept leaving the desk and going into a room and reappearing every few minutes, still saying nothing to people in line. Finally the couple in front of us were checked in and after a brief wait for the OK to board, the lady behind the desk said there may be a delay in the flight but sent them on to the gate. We were now waiting to be checked in and things were really beginning to seem a little strange when she said there would be no flight leaving for California. I dont know what we thought as they gave no information. I guess we thought they were having plane problems or something. We were told we could come back the next morning and reschedule our flight, so we left. As we were leaving the airport I suggested we get a room on 28th Street close by so we could return early the next morning. So we did, and commenced to bring our bags to the room and

SHOULDNT WE LOWER THE FLAG TO HALF STAFF By WILLIAM ZAMROWSKI

Manistee
Sept. 11, 2001, began as a beautifully clear, early autumn day. The students at Manistee Catholic were getting into the swing of a new school year and beginning to think about Homecoming. I was just finishing up my math lesson with my sixth grade students when we got word that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center Buildings. First reports said that it might have been a small private plane. By the time recess rolled around the second plane had hit the second tower and the Pentagon and it was now clear that the United States was under attack. TVs began to be turned on and some staff and students watched the developments. We all had a feeling of helplessness and wondered what would happen next. Fortunately, the schools chaplain, Fr. James Bearrs, was in the building. It was decided to gather the students in the stadium to tell them what was known, to reassure them, and most importantly to pray for the victims and our country. As we were returning to the school I was struck by how quiet the students were. Hardly anyone said a word. It was that somber quietness that made me aware that all the students understood what was happening. When we returned to class one of my students said, Shouldnt we lower the flag to half staff for those who just died? It took a young person to

decided to get breakfast at a restaurant nearby and maybe do some shopping since we had a day to just browse around. We went to the restaurant and were seated and waiting for our waitress when on the TV up above the second plane hit the twin towers. We waited and watched in disbelief for a few minutes and then looked at each other and said lets go home, we are going nowhere. We were in shock as was everyone else at the restaurant. All I wanted was to get home and let everyone know we were still on the ground and OK. We went back to the motel and gathered up our belongings and headed out. We did not have a cell phone, so no one at home knew if we were in the air or not. I noticed on the drive home all of the gas stations had long lines forming, which I didnt understand why. It was a very emotional time. When we got home and realized that all of the flights in the air at the time were ordered to land wherever the nearest airport was and there were no flights for a few days. We watched, as everyone did, the horrible events unfolding and thanked God that we were safe and not stranded in some strange city. We waited for about a month before booking another flight to California and it was eerie arriving at LAX and seeing all of the security people with their guns ready for anything that looked out of the ordinary. We will never forget where we were on 9/11/2001.

THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND WERE IN DEEP MOURNING By ELMIRA SMITHE

Manistee
We were traveling in Ireland. Our travel plans were changed when we were told by a telephone call that my 97-year-old mother was failing rapidly. We decided not to go to other areas of Ireland but return to the Shannon Airport area. We were in a lovely hotel with a restaurant and a pub. It had a beautiful natural creek running through it. After a pleasant day of

touring, we returned to the hotel. We went to the restaurant area, but strangely, we noticed no one was in the restaurant. Looking further, we noticed that everyone was in the pub watching TV. As we approached the pub someone met us and said: Are you from the United States? We will get you a chair. We sat down only to be shocked at what we saw on the TV. My husband said Is this for real or is this something from Hollywood? As we watched, and the details were revealed to us, deep concern started to sit in as our son at the time was shuttling between Boston and California. The flight number and airline was the one he used. It was impossible to make any phone calls because of the 9/11 situation. Later, we learned that he couldnt get on the flight because all of the seats were filled. After we received word that my mother had died, we went to the airport to check on flights. We were told that they didnt know when there would be any flights. The planes were on the way to Newfoundland with food, water and blankets for the people who had been diverted there because of the 9-11 attack. We checked another day, only to be told that the Irish airlines didnt meet the new U.S. standards to land in the USA. The people of Ireland were in deep mourning because so many of the policemen and firemen were of Irish descent. Wherever we went there were sprays of flowers with condolence signature books. Many churches had memorial services. Cars were lined up along the narrow roads for miles. It was five days before we could get a flight. We finally landed at Chicago

NEWLY WED RECALLS SOMBER FLIGHT HOME By BETH GARBER

Manistee
I remember exactly where I was on Sept. 11, 2001. How could I forget? After all, I was ready to start enjoying the second day of my honeymoon in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I never dreamed I would be hearing news that our country was under attack I was married on Sept. 8, 2001. While shopping for a wedding dress, I signed up for a honeymoon package and actually won a three-day stay at a location of our choice. We chose Myrtle Beach. Neither of us had been there before. We flew out of Flint airport the morning of Sept. 9. Spent half the day traveling, picked up our rental car (a convertible!) and off we went to the hotel. We enjoyed a relaxing evening, walking on the beach, watching the sunset. Woke up Tuesday, Sept. 11, discussing what attractions we were going to visit that day. As my husband showered, I received a phone call from our friend/babysitter. She said, Beth, are you watching the news? Of course I wasnt watching the news -- I was on my honeymoon! Kris said, we are under attack, Todds unit has already called the house looking for him. You see, my husband was in the Air National Guard at the time.

MEMORY: Residents
He had already put in nearly 20 years of active and guard duty for our country. His unit, stationed out of Battle Creek, was called up. I turned on the news and couldnt believe what I saw. Needless to say, the rest of the week was spent trying to enjoy our honeymoon, but 9/11 and what awaited our family was always in the back of my mind. I couldnt stop watching the news. Our kids were 7 (Marina), 5 (Kyle) and 5 (Brandon). Todd contacted the base, explained that we couldnt get back to Michigan yet. We were scheduled to fly home on Sept. 14. The afternoon of Sept. 13 was when we were told planes would be running again and we could take our scheduled flight home It was a somber flight home. Eerily quiet on the plane. On Sept. 30, Todd left for his two-year duty of protecting our country. His unit was slated to go

Walking down the hall at Jefferson Elementary where at the time, I was a teachers aide, I saw my friend and colleague, Nancy Wrzesinski, walking towards me. That infamous day, Sept. 11, 2001, has been forever etched in my mind. My son and I were sitting at the kitchen table that very morning having coffee. I glanced at the TV when this plane comes out of no where and crashed into the tower. What do you think theyre doing, making a movie? was my remark. Exactly 8:46 a.m. American flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. At 9:03 a.m., United flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. We were horrified. Who would do such a thing? How could this be happening simultaneously in the United States of America? All hell broke loose. People running, trying to get away. Rescue units running toward the towers, having the same goal, trying to save lives. Nevertheless, it was a

I was 15 when my America was changed. I should have been at school that day, but I had stayed home sick. I had slept most of the day away, finally waking up some time after 11 a.m. Hoping to catch The Price is Right, I turned on the television. What I saw instead was a burst of smoke and dust, covering the rubble from the remains of the towers, with images of people crying, down on bended knees, looking to the Heavens asking, God why? With tears starting to form in my own eyes, I headed down stairs, calling to my mother. I found her and one of my brothers sitting in the living room, faces glued to the television set. I called to my mother once more; she looked at me with a puffy red face, she too had been crying. I went to her, we hugged. I looked to my brother still starring intently at the television screen, his brows furrowed, lips pulled tight, a mix of anger, rage, and hate

my cool and not reveal anything to my students. The next day was created to be as normal as possible. I feel to this day the building staff did an excellent job of that. I cannot recall if we met before school to discuss our approach or not. What I did was to just state that our country had had a serious happening and please just raise your hand if your family told you. I have to admit, I was very surprised to see very few hands raised. Since I have never been a daytime TV person, I still recall how much I was glued to the set as the hours and days went forward. God bless America and all those who suffered losses. It felt like someone had hit me in the stomach and it was difficult to breathe for a moment. I remember hearing sirens going off outside (which, fortunately, turned out to be totally unrelated) and that sound brought all of us back to reality. As we left, I remember hugging that Mom as we tried to reassure one another. After making sure my family was okay, my assistant and I made the decision to go through with the rest of our scheduled home visits rather than cancel them. I think it was the right decision. The children were eager to meet their teacher and excited about the prospect of starting school; each parent needed the comfort from another adult. The sweetness and enthusiasm of the children helped to counterbalance the horrible uncertainty we, as adults, were feeling. The very last home visit of Sept. 11, 2001, day was planned for the evening. Arriving a few moments early I sought sanctuary in the church next to the home as I thought about the events of the day and tried to put them into some sort of perspective. It was a peaceful place to reflect and collect my thoughts. As I pulled into the yard, a small figure in a bright yellow rain slicker was splashing in a puddle. I got out of my car and the little child said, Mrs. Rowley, I have been waiting for you all day! Little did he know that as he took my hand and led me into the house, he was offering me a life line that reassured me and my faith in the resilience of human nature.

The ghastly images of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, made an indelible impression on our hearts and souls that will stay with us forever. As with tragedies of this magnitude, memories of where we were or what we were doing are still crystal clear in our minds. I had several visits to my preschoolers and their families scheduled for that day, a way to meet my students and parents in the comfortable environment of home before class started later in the month. Minutes into the first appointment, the frantic newscasts began as the Twin Towers were struck.

The morning of Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, dawned as clear and bright in Minneapolis, MN, as it did in New York. By 8 a.m. Central Daylight Savings time, my mother and I were standing in line at the ticket counter for Northwest Airlines at the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport, heading to the Quad-cities in Iowa. As we were dealing with the ticket agent, a young man standing next in line wearing headphones suddenly said Theyre saying a plane just hit the World Trade Center in New York! The ticket agent frowned as she typed away for a few seconds, finally saying, Well, everything at JFK is still on time, and went on working with our tickets. I looked at my mom and said, Wowthat must have been one heck of an error for air traffic control. Just as the Northwest agent was handing us our boarding passes, the young man with the headphones spoke again: Now theyre saying a second plane hit the World Trade Center! My mother and I walked away towards the boarding gate area, still thinking that it was a terrible air traffic mishap involving smaller planes. We discussed the possibility of a computer failure of some sort as we rode the escalator down to the commuter concourse of the airport. It seemed like an almost incredible event that hadnt really happened something the young man with the headphones had imagined. Walking towards our gate we noticed a large
