WORLD AUTOMOTIVE & SPORTS SEPT. 21, 2011

Brian Hoar, of Williston, secured an unprecedented eighth ACT Late Model Tour championship by taking the win in the Can-Am 200 at Circuit Riverside in Ste-Croix, Que., on Sunday, September 11. The win came one night after a stellar performance and win in the Budweiser Showdown at Chaudiere 200 at Autodrome Chaudiere in Vallee-Jonction, Que. Hoar led every lap of the All-Star race at Chaudiere en route to the win in the RPM Motorsports No. 37 GossCars.com Dodge. At Riverside, he finished second on the track and inherited the victory when the race winner failed post-race technical inspection. We were on fire Saturday night, Hoar said. We had a really, really good race car. It was one of those nights that most people dont even get once in a season and we had that. It was awesome. Sundays Can-Am 200 was a very different race for Hoar and his team, but they were able to put themselves in a position to be out front. Today was not the same. We struggled, Hoar said. We werent even close to what we were last year. But we had a great pit strategy and came out first when two-thirds of the field came in (to make pit stops). Track position was key. Hoar was taking a nap in his hauler on his way back to the United States when he received word that hed been declared the Can-Am 200 winner, giving Hoar his seventh win of the season and eighth ACT championship. RPM Motorsports and owner Rick Paya also won a record eighth championship. Its just been an awesome year, Hoar said. We werent always the best car or the fastest car. I have an awesome team. They did a great job. Its been an awesome three years with this crew. We have a lot of fun doing it and I think that chemistry shows. Ill probably never have another season like this with such a high average finish (currently 2.8). I said the only way that we could top last year was to win a bunch of races and we did. The fun factor went up this season. Its been an amazing season. The ACT series finale is next month at Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Joe Krawiec made history at Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford on Mekkelsen RV Night, September 10th, by clinching the inaugural USAC Dirt Midget Association championship. Known as Flat Foot for his all-out driving style, Bristol, CT driver Krawiec bookended his season by winning the season opener on May 28 and the final point-counting race on Saturday. All told, Krawiec won four of the seven USAC/DMA races. Scott Holcomb of Granby, CT finished second in the race and in the championship. Tony Montessi of Roxbury, CT was third in the 25-lap race, followed by Dana Shaw and Jamie Spalding. The youth movement was in full force at Mekkelsen RV Night, as youngsters Jordan Fornwalt, Kodie Pittman, and Dylan Rock each landed in the winners circle. Fornwalt, 14, of Bradford, posted his third win of the year in the 20-lap A Notch Above Automotive Limited Late Model feature. Fornwalt beat Robert Tucker of East Corinth and Tyler Stygles of Bradford for the win. Corinth driver Pittman, 14, took his third win of the year in the Hornet Stinger youth division, and fellow 14 year-old Travis King, also of Corinth finished second in the race and won the championship. Geoff Durphey of Springfield was third in the race. At just 11 years old, Enfield, NH driver Rock earned his first career win in the Granite State Mini Sprint 500cc division, stealing the lead from Troy Boissoneau on the final corner of the 20-lap race. Lacey Hanson finished third. Dan Eastman of Thetford Center picked up his second Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modified win of the season in a 30-lap feature for the headline division in the 99ROCK Weekly Racing Series. Eastman used a late restart to get past Justin Comes

of Middlebury for the lead and cruised to the win. Comes held off charges from Adam Pierson of Fairlee and Jason Gray of East Thetford for second. Bryan King of Corinth rounded out the unofficial top five. Eastmans win gives him a guaranteed starting berth in the second annual New England Dirt Track Championships presented by The Home Depot, Lake Sunapee Savings Bank, and Garys Tire & Auto of Claremont. The $1,000-to-win

race for DIRTcar-legal Sportsman Modifieds will be held on Saturday, September 24. Gene Pierson, Jr., of East Corinth, made it a half-dozen victories with a dominant win in the Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe class. Josh Harrington of Topsham took second place after a late pass of rookie Jeff Robbins. Robbins, a rookie from Woodsville, NH, got his best career finish in

If you live in the Northeast you are very susceptible to your BRAKE PADS or CALIPER SLIDES freezing, binding, or sticking. This is due to moisture, dirt, sand, and de-icing chemicals used on our roads. Your BRAKE PADS and CALIPER SLIDES will get corroded and-or have a dirt buildup that causes them to bind. When they bind, the pads cannot release properly, resulting in brake drag. It feels as though you are slightly holding your foot on the brake pedal all of the time. The end result is drop in fuel mileage, premature brake wear out, and warped brake rotors. The cure for this is a preventive maintenance called a BRAKE CALIPER/ KNUCKLE SERVICE. This service should be done at least once a year to prevent these issues from happening. Once the issue Special: occurs it is too late. Call today and prevent expensive problems in the future.

Taking a stand, political or otherwise, can be dangerous, but no more so than when that stand is up a tree. The bowhunting boom of the 1970s introduced a new tool to hunters -- portable, commercially-made tree stands and hunters were quick to discover their advantages. You can see over the brush, deer generally dont look up, and when the wind is right, your scent will drift above deer that are close. However, using them safely demands preparation and precaution. With archery season open and firearms season just around the corner, here are some tips to get the most out of your tree stand hunting experience: - Choose a live, straight tree. Find the deer first, then find a healthy tree within shooting range - Choose smart stands. Only use stands certified by the Treestand Manufacturers Association (TMA). - Inspect your stands. Look for loose nuts and bolts each time they are used. - Know the rules. On state lands, it is illegal to place nails or other hardware into trees or to build permanent structures. On private lands, it is illegal to erect any tree stand, cut or remove trees or other plants, or to cut limbs without the landowners permission. Regardless of property status, all stands, including ground blinds, must be marked with the owners name and address.

Tips on Using Tree Stands

- Always wear full-body safety harness, even for climbing. Most falls happen when going up and down the tree, and getting in and out of the stand. - Dont go too high. The higher you go, the smaller the vital zone on a deer becomes, while the likelihood of a serious injury increases. Usually, 15 to 20 feet is sufficient - Never try to carry firearms or bows up and down trees. Always use a rope to raise and lower all gear. Make sure your firearm is unloaded. - Strap in as soon as you get in the stand. To catch your fall, a short tether is safer than a long one. If you do fall, replace your tether. - Familiarize yourself with your gear before you go. The morning of opening day is poor time to put your safety belt on for the first time. - Be careful with long-term placement. Exposure to the elements can damage straps, ropes and attachment cords. Also, the stands stability can be compromised, over time, as the tree grows. These tips are offered by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Departments Hunter Education Program. Each year, the Programs 350 volunteer instructors certify almost 5,000 students. The free courses are entirely funded by hunters and shooters through the Federal Aid in Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration Program. Be smart, think safety, and good luck.

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is asking hunters to help protect Vermont deer and moose by avoiding the use of urine-based attractant scents. The infectious agent of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a fatal disease of deer, is a mutant protein or prion that research has shown can be passed in urine. This mutant protein can bind to soils and remain infectious for many years. Some captive deer facilities producing urine products for hunting have not complied with mandatory disease prevention and monitoring regulations. The products they are producing may, as a result, be capable of transmitting diseases such as CWD. Saskatchewan has banned the use of deer urine and nine states are considering a similar regulation. CWD is fatal to deer and moose and has been impossible to eliminate once it has been fully established in a population. CWD has not been detected in Vermont after several years of testing brain tissue samples from dead deer. If CWD is ever detected in Vermont, local deer numbers would have to be greatly reduced to remove the disease before it becomes established, said Vermont Director of Wildlife Mark Scott. This reduction would have to be done for at least five years. More information about Chronic Wasting Disease can be found in the Big Game Management Plan, on the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Departments website, and at www.cwd-info.org.

Derrick ODonnell used a convincing win in Saturdays ACT Bond Auto/ WIX Tiger Tour Johnny Clark Memorial 101 at Riverside Speedway to pad his point lead and notch his second win in four tour events to date. ODonnell won the season opener in May at Thunder Road. ODonnell took the lead after Joe Steffen suffered a flat tire on the final restart and then outran runner-up Tony Rossi over the final thirty-seven lap green flag run. Brendan Moody finished third in a three-wide last lap battle to the finish line edging out Eric Badore and Bobby Therrien, fourth and fifth, respectively. The 101 lap event saw just three cautions and was completed in just over thirty nine minutes. In Riverside feature action Luke Shannon won the Late Model event over Brent Gervais in second and Brandon Lambert in third. Other feature winners included Dean Switser in the Street Stock division, Bear Lapan in the Dwarf cars, Shawna Whitcomb in the Angels, Jason Wyman in the Cyclones and Jared Plumley (Veterans) and Cody Smith (Rookies) Daredevils. Orleans, VT Late Model driver Cody Hodge walked away from one of the most terrifying short track wrecks seen by this scribe in 40 years of racing on Saturday at Riverside Speedway. In what was very similar in intensity to Beaver Dragons wreck the final season at Catamount Stadium Hodge got up on the right front of Jesse Switsers No 25 during a heat race and climbed the wall to the starters stand which catapulted the No 72 to the top of the retaining fence before it tumbled and rolled down the length of the front stretch pan caking on its roof than spun like a top to the middle of Turn one. Like the former wreck in Milton the crowd sitting in the very same stands from the old Catamount went dead quiet as the cars shut off under a red flag condition and fans ,officials and competitors held their breath as safety crews rushed to the scene. With the help of safety personnel Hodge emerged from the tattered remains of his car and strutted to the ambulance where he was checked over and released by the crew. Contacted at his home on Sunday Hodge was concerned about his car and his racing future. Im a little stiff, Im alright but that car will never see a track again, it was sold and leaving in a couple of weeks.. we were going to use that money as partial payment on another car. Now we have nothing left said Hodge. Im not sure what happened, I know our front tires lockedthen all I could see was concrete and suddenly I was airborne. I not sure if I blacked out but then I was spinning like a top.. upside down on the asphalt. When it finally stopped, I just sat there upside down thinking is this really happening. Chief starter Pete Marshall was injured during the melee and received a bruise on his leg but was able to return to starters stand to finish the flagging the event. Brad Keselowski used a double-duty driving weekend to win Saturdays Dollar General Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway. It was the third win of the season for Keselowski and the fifteenth of his career as he cruised to a decisive victory over Carl Edwards, whose chances for the victory evaporated when his No 60 Ford ran out of fuel moments before a scheduled pit stop on Lap 124 of 200. Pole sitter Brian Scott came home third, followed by Aric Almirola and Sam Hornish Jr. Ricky Stenhouse retained the top spot in the standings with an eighth-place finish. Austin Dillon used a two-tire call on a late-race pit stop to steal Friday nights Fast Five 225 Camping World Truck Series race at Chicagoland Speedway from Kevin Harvick, who dominated the event until the last round of stops. The win was Dillons second of the season and the fourth of his career. Harvick hung on for second five seconds back followed by Nelson Piquet Jr, Parker Kligerman and Kyle Busch, third through fifth, respectively. This is the biggest win of my career, I think, Dillon, 21 said in Victory lane. I ran up there, racing with Kyle and Harvick. Harvick was great all night, but (Crew Chief Danny) Stockman made a call at the end to put us on two tires. He knows when I get out front its like smelling blood for a shark. Dillon moved up two spots in the series standings to second and trimmed 11thplace finisher James Bueschers lead to three points. Johnny Sauter, who finished sixth, is six points back in third. Adam Pierson claimed his seventh overall track championship of his career with a second in the Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modified feature Saturday night at Bear Ridge Speedway. Former three-time track champion Gary Siemons posted his first win of the season in the event. The championship will be a second consecutive crown for Pierson in the mighty Mods. In other dirt action Terry Williams earned his second Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe win of the season and Tyler Stygles won his fourth feature of the year in the Limited Late Models and took charge of the point race by just two points over Robert Tucker entering this Saturdays season finale. Short answer: The jurys still out. The average finish of the eventual champion in the Chase opener is 11.3. Not too bad, not too good. Only one eventual champion has won the Chase opener: Kurt Busch in 2004. The others 2005: Tony Stewart finished 2nd 2006: Jimmie Johnson finished 39th 2007: Johnson finished 6th 2008: Johnson finished 2nd 2009: Johnson finished 4th 2010: Johnson finished 25th What Theyre Saying The switch to fuel injection gives the teams a little more freedom to innovate. Any rule change gives teams a chance to gain an advantage. Im definitely in favor. Well be able to study how the engine is responding throughout the race and make adjustments based on science. Today, the crew chief and driver get together and try to figure out whats happening on the track. Now, well know. My dad has been pushing for cleaner racecars for years, hes very pleased.- Robert Yates, Roush Fenway Engines Next Lap The Tom Curley led American Canadian Tour heads to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the 3rd Annual ACT Invitational on Saturday. The race grid is set by invitations sent to the 43 top Late Model teams in New England, New York, Quebec and Ontario. Recently crowned 2011 ACT Champion Brian Hoar is the most recent winner at NHMS, winning the ACT All Star Challenge in August. Eddie Macdonald, always a perennial favorite at the Magic Mile, was the inaugural 2009 Invitational winner. MacDonald will do double duty this weekend running both the NASCAR K&N East Series on Friday and Saturdays Invitational III. Joey Polewarczyk Jr is the defending race champion and is looking to repeat after a disappointing 2011 season. The Invitational will cap off the Northeasts biggest triple header that will also feature the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Its Sylvania time at New Hampshire Motor Speedway when Cup teams roll into the Magic Mile for Race #2 in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, the 15th Annual Sylvania 300, Sunday( ESPN 1:00 p.m.). accidents were not wearing hunter orange. This is statistic is even more startling when you consider that 81 percent of New York hunters do wear hunter orange. Concerns that deer are scared by hunter orange are unfounded. Recent research suggests deer do see color, but they have no redsensitive cone cells, so they cant tell red or orange from green and brown. In addition, deer have a different sensitivity to various wavelengths of light. They see short wavelength colors such as blue brighter than humans do, but are less sensitive to longer wavelengths such as orange and red, so these colors look darker. Fluorescent colors like hunter orange look bright to humans because they absorb UV rays we cant see and turn them into longer wavelengths we can see. The effect is opposite on deer. Hunter orange reflects less of the UV that deer see well and more of the rays deer dont

Jackets and vests are in this year, but hunters dont need to keep up with the fashion blogs to know there is just one in color for the woods: blaze orange. Season after season, smart hunters choose fluorescent hunter orange. Because no matter how rare, each incident casts hunting in a bad light by reinforcing the perception that hunting is dangerous. As result, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department strongly urges hunters to include some fluorescent hunter orange clothing with their other essential gear. Hunter orange is a choice in Vermont, said Chris Saunders, Vermonts Hunter Education Coordinator. But thats no excuse. In the past ten years, almost half of the states hunting accidents might have been prevented with hunter orange. In a review of 20 years of Vermont hunting-related shooting reports, hunters moving into the line of fire of other hunters and mistaking other hunters for game are two of the three most common causes of the states accidents. Both types involve visibility problems, and both underscore the need for hunters to see and be seen during the fall firearms deer season. Nationwide, data supports this. For instance, a New York study found that 94 percent of hunters involved in mistaken for game

see as well. Regardless of how well they see it, ample anecdotal evidence suggests they arent bothered by it. Yearly deer harvests in many of the states that require hunter orange, like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania exceed several hundred thousand animals a year. However, even blaze orange wont help you if you dont follow the four basic rules of safe hunting: 1) Treat every gun as if it is loaded. 2) Point your gun in a safe direction. 3) Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. 4) Be sure of your target and beyond. Remember, hunting is very safe but it could be even safer if all hunters wore a hunter orange vest and hat. You dont want to be the only hunter in the woods without it. Hunt smart, think safety, and good luck.
