SHOWPREVIEW
It’s here again! South and South East Asia’s largest manufacturing
technology show, IMTEX 2001. Eleventh in the series, IMTEX - the Indian Machine Tool
Exhibition with international participation, was scheduled from 15 to 22 January 2001 at
the Pragati Maidan complex, the exhibition ground in India’s capital, New Delhi.
IMTEX 2001 was poised yet again to manifest the new trends worldwide in
manufacturing technologies, as well as bring to the fore wide and varied range of
solutions available for use in the changed industrial environment.
IMTEX exhibition epitomises scores of opportunities to forge global
partnerships, promote new alliances, enhance market niches, develop brand equity for
manufacturers from India and elsewhere
There was always something special in store for everyone at the IMTEX shows.
Harmonious to a Changed Market Environment
IMTEX 2001 took place amidst momentous changes in the country’s economy, as well
as coincides with significant transformations in the market.
The economic environment in India has undergone a sea change over the last ten
years. At the beginning of the new millennium, the economy posted ecstatic results
leading to a GDP growth of about six per cent.

Industrial

2001
An encouraging industrial performance, in particular amongst the manufacturing
sectors signaled revival in business fortunes that had slumped in the latter half of the
Nineties.
A strong recovery in exports coupled with a manageable growth in imports fuelled
a sharp upturn in the country’s trade fortunes. An increased flow of foreign investment
further enhanced competitiveness in the Indian market.

Growth (in %) during year of

Indicators
2000 – 2001 (April – June 2000)

Exports 27.6
Imports 25.7
Direct Tax 66.7
Income tax 48.3
Corporate Tax 75.5
indirect Tax 12.2
Excise Duties 13.3
Custom Duties 11.2

Optimistic forecasts are, therefore, in galore for the Indian economy.

Advent of the second phase of economic reforms promises a GDP growth of
about seven to eight per cent over the next five to six years.
This would, off course, be complemented by an appreciable increase in
output by the Indian industry. And with manufacturing sectors showing signs of
resurrection, an IIP of over 10 to 12 % would be a definite reality in the coming few
years.
Manufacturing industries in the country - automotive, consumer durable
sector, and intermediate goods posted over ten per cent growth in the year that just
went by; having experienced demand surge for their products in the home and
international markets.
Revival in business fortunes in the automotive and auto components,
industries resulted in introduction of new brands in the market. Not only did Indian
manufacturers launch new competitive models, but also several overseas organisations
entered the market with their range of globally recognised brands. Never ever before

has the Indian automotive market witnessed such rapid introduction of new
models in such a short span.
Likewise, the ever increasing demand for consumer durable led the
growth in the industry segment in the market for the fourth successive year. The trend
was similar in industries spanning across the intermediate goods and the capital goods
sectors.

Indian as well as other international markets are poised to undergo

revolutionary changes in cross-border trade and business, in this part of the century. A
phase when trade barriers would be dismantled world-over leading to stiffer and much
fiercer competition - all for a share in a much larger international market.
Historic changes, therefore, were expected to be on the horizon around
the time when IMTEX 2001 was scheduled - both, within the Indian market as well as in
the global environment.
