How would the programming process have prevented the errors from being made in the construction documents?
Over the past five weeks, Ive come to realize the true importance of the various stages of programming in the creation of sound design solutions. Ive seen how it became an extra set of eyes for me as the designer and programmer, which made me see possible areas of concern and troubleshoot them. Some of the areas of concern noted above are not as severe as to endanger the clients safety. Nevertheless, they are still focus areas which the programmer needs to consider. If XYZs designers only understood this critical tool, then the above corrections wouldve been avoided and therefore better address client values and ultimately improve accessibility and overall customer-friendliness of the space.

Describe in your own words how the programming process fits into the overall design process.
Similar to a ground troop assessing the perimeter before proceeding with the attack plan, designers have a better chance of finishing a successful project once programming becomes an integral part of their trade. A design program acts like a battle plan which presents every aspect of the mission. From the current situation to the types of individuals involved, to the kinds of materials needed and the amount of time allotted, programming gives designers the big picture in high-definition before ultimately diving into construction. This critical cornerstone has the power to provide designers insight and the ability to get a glimpse of what to expect once the project is complete; the final checklist before we say, attack!

The space is also very closed off which will affect the lighting and view requirements as well. Lateralfileswillnotfitintheareaeither. The coat closet seems to be in a very odd place. When the doors are open theres no way anyonecangetbysothespaceneededforcirculationisnotthere. InthefurnitureplantheDrschairismissing.NocirculationroomandnotADAaccessible. Overallcirculationisoff,meaninginmeasurements,spaceandflow. Allfinisheswerechosenbutfortheprogramdocumentthisisnotyetneededbecausethisis just the information gathering phase. Also, no door measurements were given so its not certainthedoorsarethecorrectsize.

ThePROGRAMMINGPHASEallowsyoutoreallygetanunderstandingofyourclientwantsandneeds.Creatingthedifferent matricesandusingmethodssuchasinterviewingandobservationcanreallyeliminateguessworkandanyquestionsyoumay have.Ifthepersonwhocreatedthesedocumentswouldhavetakenthetimetogettoknowhis/herclientand doa little research and a program document first than/ he/she would have known the requirements before hand and could have anticipated what was going to be needed thus creating a floor plan better suited for his/her clients needs. If a program documentwouldhavebeencreatedmost,ifnotall,ofthesemistakescouldhavebeenavoided.

Increase square footage to reception area / decrease square footage in lobby. Requirement: Coat closet should be used for the convenience of the patients, visitors and staff. Solution: A better solution for the coat closet would be in the lobby. Requirement: A divided lobby for the comfort of sick/well patient. No accommodations have been made for this requirement. Solution: Provide a small area in the corner of the lobby separated by plants or portable walls. Requirement: A wide shelf or area for infant carriers. No provisions have been made for this requirement. Solution: Install a 12-18 shelf to the right of the reception window. Requirement: Door opening should be at least 36 to meet ADA requirements. - No dimensions are documented on the plan. Solution: Document door dimensions on the construction plan. Requirement: According to the Program Document the storage area should have shelves to accommodate boxes and supplies. No shelves are documented in the construction plan. Solution: Insert shelves in the storage room / document on the construction plan. Requirement: Nurses station must be a minimum of 80 sq feet. The current nurses station does not meet that requirement. Solution: Reconfigure the storage space: increase the space of the nurses station and decrease the space of the storage room. Requirement: According to the Program Document, one of the ADA specified restrooms should have access from the lobby. There is no access to a restroom from the lobby area. Solution: reverse the configuration and place one of the doors on the lobby wall. Requirement: Exam rooms should be a minimum of 85 sq feet. The current size does not meet that requirement. Solution: Reconfigure the square footage from other rooms; possibly making the offices and break room smaller to increase the square footage in the exam rooms. Requirement: Counter space and cabinet storage in each exam room. No provisions of cabinetry in the exam rooms is documented in the construction plan. Solution: Place a small countertop and cabinetry in each exam room for a work area.

Requirement: The finish plan reflect a fun and relaxed atmosphere with unique activities and design that will lift the spirit. There was also a request for warm and cool strong colors. The finished plan exhibited here is relaxed but does not display a fun, spirited nature. Solution: Alter selections and include colors and textures that are brighter and have a higher contrast. Introduce complementary hues and balance the color combinations through value harmony.

Requirement: Easy maintenance and clean ability. - The flooring surface in the exam rooms (carpet) may not be the best surface for clean ability and maintenance. This is an area that should remain as sterile as possible and be able to be wiped down with solvents. Solution: Use vinyl tile or ceramic tile for the floor service in the exam rooms.

Requirement: Easy maintenance and clean ability The flooring surface in the storage room is carpet. Solution: For easier movement of heavy boxes, supplies and copier maintenance a vinyl tile would be a better solution. Requirement: Flooring, base and wall finishes need to be included in the Doctors offices. Solution: Include finish choices in the construction document.

How would the programming process have prevented the errors from being made in the construction documents?
The PROGRAMMING PROCESS prevents errors from being made in the CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT phase by providing a written form which helps provide a clear understanding of the ISSUES, NEEDS and PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS of the project. It is a phase in the overall design process that brings to light concerns and sometimes very critical issues. The programming process helps to prevent future difficulties from occurring; difficulties that could be challenging and expensive to alter once the process has moved into the construction document phase. The programming process eliminates misunderstandings that may occur between the DESIGN TEAM and the client and helps to keep the project on track and running smoothly. Regarding the situation with the Pediatric center, the programming process emphasizes important elements and assists the architect and the design team with special requirements that must be included into the square footage. For example, the Pediatric Center requires that each exam room have a minimum of 85 square feet. Just this one piece of information alone influences how the floor plan will be laid out. If construction documents are developed without this important specification then new construction documents would have to be created to satisfy the need and the special request of the client. This could result in either a loss of time and fees for the architect or additional expense for the client, depending on how it is handled. The gap in communication alone could red flag to the client that this project might be mishandled and may not turn out as expected. This mishandling of information could cause some difficulties for the design team as things progress. Another area regarding this project where the programming process serves as a benefit is in furnishings and design choices. The program document provides DESIGN CONCEPTS and sample images that highlight color, character and furniture style. It also provides preliminary sketches that give the architect and client a clear vision of the furnishings that are included in the budget and how the furnishings fit into the room. By providing this information early in the process, the design team and the client can discuss changes which should be made and have an opportunity for a re-check of information to ensure all necessary pieces are included in the project plan. 9

Describe in your own words how the programming process fits into the overall design process.
For a design to be a success there must be a clear understanding of the problems and an effective methodical approach to the solutions. The programming process identifies the problems, issues, needs or concerns of the client and organizes the information toward directed documented goals and solutions. The Programming Document develops a plan to follow for the design team. A plan that considers the needs, preferences and constraints of the project and identifies the information in an organized manner so all parties involved have a clear direction of what is to be accomplished. To include documented research to justify choices and clarification of special needs such as specific areas for ADA considerations, the program document can be used as a reference tool throughout the project and a resource to test and evaluate whether the project meets the goals and is staying on task. The preliminary process places the needs of the client at the center of the planning design process and allows for testing and evaluation to take place on paper before time and money is spent in architecture and design work. It is during the programming process that opportunities arise for changes to occur with minimal expense. It is through the research, interviews, surveys and compiled inventories that provide the client with permanent documentation of their specific situation and a resource of data that can be used for future projects.

The nish selections represented here do not re ect the design intention of the client. The colors are neutral and have little contrast making them appear very institutional. The program document indicated that the nishes should be bold and bright. Vinyl tile is not a sustainable material and should be replaced by MCT or an equivalent. Carpet should be limited to o ces where heavy tra c patterns and spills would be minimal. Other areas of the clinic should have easy to clean surfaces.
