KIPP NYC Professional Development Day September 23, 2011 Here is a glimpse of some of the 30+ workshops for

our first Professional Development Day for the 2011-12 school year. Every KIPP NYC teacher participates in three workshops of his/her choosing. After our workshop time, we meet as a region to debrief the day, led by Dave Levin, KIPP CoFounder and KIPP NYC Superintendent. Our Professional Development Days allow us to come together as a region to collaborate, to learn from each other and to have fun.
KIPP NYC Workshop Addressing Sensorimotor and Attention Problems in the Classroom: An Occupational Therapy Perspective Presenter Session Description We will seek to understand the neurophysiology underlying attention and sensorimotor problems and will learn practical classroom strategies to address these problems. We will have the opportunity to look at successful best practices from the implementation of the Character Report Card and to brainstorm ways we can fully blend character into our schools and classrooms. We will hear from a panel of college-aged KIPP alumni address topics such as: demonstrating a growth mindset, taking responsibility for results, mistakes and behavior, and considering cultural connections and differences when making decisions. We will define, discuss and practice writing with what some writing teachers feel is the hardest of the Six Traits to teach: Voice. We will become students and cycle through a unit of sophisticated How-Tos that can be adapted to content area, critical essay or creative writing assignments. In this three part learning opportunity, we will learn techniques that enable students to close read nonfiction text through use of analyzing word meanings and choice of text structures. We will be given a taste of centers as we discover their significance, organizational structures, and differential elements.

Session Description What would a classroom look like where students possessed a modeling disposition? As the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) elevate the role of modeling as a mathematical practice, we will learn what exactly modeling entails and how we can support the development of a modeling disposition. How we explain and respond to setbacks can greatly impact our ability to feel successful. After looking at our own personal thoughts and language, we will discuss best practices for how to model optimistic thinking for students as they develop their own thinking styles and become more resilient. We will learn a half dozen bag of tricks activities that are fun, highly effective, and creative. We will leave with strategies for spelling, editing, memory, spatial and sequential awareness. We will learn the features of KIPP NYCs amazing Data Portal and how to use it to analyze data and drive our students achievement. For those in KIPP NYCs leadership cohort, we will review our work as KIPP NYC leaders through management and influencing tools. We will also use this time to flesh out our leadership projects both individually and collaboratively. Well dive into The Teaching Cycle and focus on the competency assessment and analysis by asking questions such as, What are the pros and cons of using multiple choice questions versus constructed response questions? We will be able to write effective multiple choice and constructed response assessment items for a standard that each of us will be teaching next week. We will learn how to make overall wellness a part of our day. We will participate in a mini-boot camp that involves exercises that use only body weight resistance, and can be done in any place, at any time.
