IEC 61850 for the PowerLogic ION7550/ION7650

Power and energy meter Daniel Brandao PLUG Conference Edmonton Nov 5, 2010

Introduction
A major part of Schneider Electric strategy to differentiate its products is based on providing the most comprehensive set of communication options: Multiple communication ports: RS-232; RS-485; InfraRed optical port, Modem, Ethernet (100BaseTX and 100BaseFX)

Multiple protocols: ION; Modbus RTU (slave / master); Modbus TCP; DNP 3.0, Ethergate, Modemgate and now IEC 61850

Where does IEC 61850 come from? Substation situation

What are these challenges? Lack of interoperability between devices high integration costs; Limited vendor choice not always the best product for a particular need; Multiple technologies working together high maintenance costs;

Why IEC 61850 is different

IEC 61850 protocol was created to take advantage of modern Ethernet switched technology and, in addition to the specification of the protocol elements (how bytes are transmitted on the wire), IEC 61850 provides a comprehensive model for how power system devices should organize data in a manner that is consistent across all types and brands of devices: Object model based on human understandable names: V Phase A is 26.3 kV instead of IED1, Obj 30, Var 4, #6 = Va; Standardized data grouping based on function, rather than on device type; Self describing devices vendor provides a file with the devices features; Standardized configuration language (SCL): precise definition of a devices role in a power system

IEC 61850 Implementation on ION meters

Both ION 7550 and ION 7650 will support IEC 61850 protocol. The meters will provide via 61850:
Operational metering data (V, I, PF, Power, Energy totals) and some power quality parameters (harmonics, symmetrical components); Access to read and write meter digital & analog I/O; Custom mapping of ION values into 61850 in addition to standard models; Up to 4 client connections Reporting service for 61850 data: 1 buffered and 5 unbuffered reports per client, 50 members max;

Additional features: COMTRADE waveform recording and time synchronization via
