AUTHOR S NO TE Robert and I discussed many ideas for this book but very quickly found ourselves asking

two key questions: What, uniquely, could his artistic vision and special talents bring to a Chanukah book? And what, uniquely, could I write about a holiday whose story and traditions have certainly been featured in picture books before? We concluded that each page would be a window into history a window in which a menorah is shining. Wed begin with the desecration of the Temple, then show the journey of the Diaspora, throughout which Jews have persisted in lighting the Chanukah candles and remembering the miracle of the olive oil even while they have searched for a homeland, fled hostile countries, voyaged to the unknown New World, and built communities in lands where Hebrew had never been heard before. So our story is the celebration of this enduring spirit that still lights menorahs every year all around the world.
