SAT 1
Course objectives
The objectives of this course are: 1) to familiarize students with the format of the test and the scoring system 2) to review math concepts, grammar rules, reading strategies 3) to teach students to apply strategies for each section 4) to give students practice answering questions both in-class and at home 5) to increase students stamina, confidence and test-taking ability 6) to raise their scores by over 200 points

Course description
We start with an explanation of test format, scoring and skipping strategies. Next, students are taught how to read for the SAT and how to think for the Critical Reading passages. Significant emphasis is placed on the essay portion, and students will have to write three essays during the course for homework. Unlike other courses that go straight into solving the grammar questions on the Writing section, we do not assume students already have a background in grammar. Students will be taught the grammar rules necessary for this test, and more importantly, how to apply these rules to the questions. In addition, students will be given an extensive vocabulary list and there will be weekly vocabulary quizzes. For Math, we will review in detail the concepts required for the SAT, analyze examples, and solve questions. We will also teach students problem solving strategies as well as techniques for solving SAT Math questions. The class size is between 3 to 16 students.

Free practice tests and review

We encourage all students to take a free diagnostic test before the course starts so that we can accurately assess the students standard. Please make an appointment with our office if you wish to sit for this free, no obligation test. Please note the test takes 4 hours. After the course, students may take up to four free practice tests at our center under timed conditions. The tests are optional, but we find that students who conscientiously complete all tests and make the effort to review their mistakes do better than students who do not. All practice tests must be used up within the academic school year. The four practice tests must be taken on Saturdays 1-5pm. The review for the tests will be conducted from 5-6pm. If you wish to sit for all the practice tests, please ensure you register for our courses at least three months before the actual test. During Summer, students will take all five tests after the course has been completed.

For the intensive courses, the order that these modules are taught in may be changed. For the verbal, students will not be taught the Improving Paragraphs section. This is an insignificant part of the test as there are only 6 questions on the whole test. They will also receive less inclass tutorial for both math and verbal. Therefore, it is imperative that students take responsibility for their own learning and commit to working on the questions at home even after the intensive course is over.

How Much Work Will The Student Get?

Each group class is different. Depending on the groups abilities and motivation, the tutors may assign more or less homework. The table below should be taken as an approximate guide for the amount of work students should expect to do when they come to Studyworks, on top of their school work and school tests. Students should continue to work at least an hour a day on their own until their actual test day. Coming to a test prep program is only half the battle won. Students MUST work hard on their own in order to do well on the SAT. 5

Which course is better?

In general, if you are not in a rush, we highly recommend the weekend course. The weekend course gives students time to digest the information they have learnt and to apply the strategies over the week as they work through their homework. It gives the teachers more time to learn the weaknesses of the students and to help them improve. Intensive courses are good for students who want to get a taste of SAT prep. Students who are extremely motivated and self-directed will find the intensive courses useful.

Who are Studyworks tutors?

Math Mr. Thye Ang has a Masters in Education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is the founder of Studyworks Singapore. Thye specializes in teaching Math for High School and test prep. Doing well in Math requires thinking and problem solving skills. Thye likes the challenge of imparting thinking skills and derives satisfaction from seeing students solve their own questions. Thye has more than ten years of teaching experience. English and English Literature Ms. Vera Yap has a Masters in Applied Linguistics from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington. She is the co-founder of Studyworks Singapore. Vera specializes in Literature and English at the High School level and test prep. She is particularly good at easing students into 9th grade literature with very detailed explanations of more challenging texts such as Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. Tutoring Services Available

Private Tutorial Bookings for private tutorial lessons should be made at least two months in advance of your intended start-date. Lessons are usually held once a week for an hour per subject. The day and time set depends on a match between the students and the tutors availability. Students in 11th and 12th grade will have priority for the weekends. Students in other grades should expect to come for lessons after school on weekdays, except Mondays. All lessons are held at our office. Private tutorial charges range from $90.00 to $140.00 depending on the subject. Fees are to be paid four lessons in advance. Last minute cancellations of a lesson on the same day will result in a penalty of 50% of the lesson fee. An administrative fee of $50 will be charged for fees that are more than two weeks late. Group Lessons Our group lessons provide students with a comprehensive overview of the tests. Group classes consist of lectures and tutorials. During the lectures, our tutors explain, review and demonstrate the use of concepts required. Tutorials help the students to reinforce the learning and to extend their application of what they have learned through practice. Students will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions during tutorial sessions. Group size ranges from 3 students to 16 students. Form your own group! If you and your friends are taking the same test, why not sign up together to form your own group? Youll save money and have the support of your friends while studying. We offer special group rates. Terms and Conditions

1. Eligibility. Studyworks welcomes all students into our courses. However, for maximum learning impact, students must be at least 13 years or older. Students do not need to have taken the SAT 1 test or any other test in order to attend our courses. Right of Refusal. Studyworks reserves the right to refuse admission to students for the Studyworks course if the student is deemed unsuitable for the course. Studyworks reserves the right not to disclose the reason(s) for the refusal. Test Registration. Students will need to register for the official SAT /ACT/SSAT or any other test on their own. Studyworks does not provide test registration services. Course Materials. The course fee includes all learning materials. Additional learning materials are not necessary and may be purchased at the students own discretion. Refund and Cancellation Policy. For cancellation of registration less than 3 days before classes begin, we will refund 85% of the course fee and charge 15% as administrative fee. There will be no refund of course fees once the course has started, even if you discontinue due to unforeseen circumstances. Retakes. Upon completion of the Studyworks program, the student has the option of retaking the entire course for a nominal fee of 50% of the course fee, subject to availability. Priority will be given to new students. Repeating students may be wait-listed. Copyright Policy. All learning materials are copyright to Studyworks, and/or their respective publishers. Photocopying/redistributing of any learning material is illegal. Video-recording, picture-taking or audio recording of classes is strictly forbidden. Work done by students may be kept and used by Studyworks for pedagogical or promotional purposes. The students privacy will be maintained at all times. Schedules. All schedules are subject to change. Additional Terms and Conditions for SAT 1

9. Money Back Policy. If any student does not see an increase in
his/her official SAT score after taking the Studyworks course, he/she can get back the course fee paid. To be eligible, you need to a) be registered for a group SAT class and have paid your course fee in full. b) provide us with copies of all your official SAT scores during course registration. c) have attended all your lessons at the regularly scheduled time. If you are unwell, a Medical Certificate from your doctor is required to justify your absence. d) have completed all your homework satisfactorily (70% pass rate), and have taken all 5 practice tests included in the course. e) retake a Studyworks SAT course (free of charge) with full attendance. f) take the next available official SAT test after the end of the Studyworks course. g) submit your Money Back Policy request within 90 days from the date of the official SAT test if your test score still does not increase after this second course. 10.
