PART A (5 X 16 = 80)
11. (a) A single dry plate clutch transmits 7.5kw at 900rpm. The axial pressure is limited to 0.07N/mm2. If the coefficient of friction is 0.25, find the mean radius and face width of the friction lining assuming the ratio of the mean radius and the face width of the friction lining assuming the ratio of the mean radius to the face width as 4 and outer and inner radii of the clutch plate. (16) (or) (b) (i) A leather faced conical clutch has a cone angle of 30. If the intensity of pressure between the contact surfaces is limited to 0.35 MPa and the breadth of the conical surface is not to exceed one-third of the mean radius, find the dimensions of the contact surfaces to transmit 22.5 kW at 200rpm. Assume uniform rate of wear and coefficient of friction as 0.15. (10) (ii) A multiple disc clutch has five plates having four pairs of active friction surfaces. If the intensity of pressure is not to exceed 0.127N/mm2, find the power transmitted at 500 rpm. The outer and inner radii of friction surfaces are 125 mm and 75 mm respectively. Assume uniform wear and coefficient of friction is 0.3. (6) 12. (a) An open belt drive connects two pulleys 120 cm and 50 cm diameters on parallel shafts 4m apart. The maximum tension in the belt is 1855 N. The coefficient of friction is 0.3. The driver pulley of diameter 120cm runs at 200 rpm. (or) (b) An open belt drive connects two parallel shafts 1.2 m apart. The driving and the driven shafts rotate at 1350 rpm and 140 rpm respectively and the driven pulley is 400 mm in diameter. The belt is 5 mm thick and 80 mm wide. The coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley id 0.3 and the maximum tension in the belting is 1.4MN/m2. Determine (i) Diameter of the driven pulley (ii) Maximum power that can be transmitted by the belting (iii) Required initial belt tension. (16) 13. (a) A compressor, requiring 90kW is to run at about 250 rpm. The drive is by V-belts from an electric motor running at 750 rpm. The diameter of the pulley on the compressor shaft must not be greater than1 meter while the centre distance between the pulleys is limited to 1.75 meter. The belt should not exceed 1600 m/min. Determine the number of V-belts required to transmit the power if each belt has a cross-sectional area of 375 mm2, density 1000 kg/m3 and an allowable tensile stress of 2.75 MPa. The groove angle is 35. The coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.25. Also calculate the length required of each belt. (16) (or) (b) A flat belt drive consists of two V-belts in parallel, on groove pulleys of the same size. The angle of the groove is 30. The cross sectional area of the each belt is 750mm 2 and coefficient of friction is 0.12. The density of the belt material is 1.3Mg/m3 and the maximum safe stress in the material is 7 MPa. Calculate the power that can be transmitted between the pulleys 300 mm diameter rotating at 1500 rpm. Find also the shaft speed in rpm at which the power transmitted would be maximum. (16) 14. A shaft carries four masses in parallel planes A, B, C and D in this order along its length. The masses at B and C are 18kg and 12.5kg respectively, and each has an eccentricity of 80mm. The angle between the masses at B and C is 100 and that between the masses at B and A is 190, both being measured in the same direction. The axial distance between the planes A and B is 100mm and that between B and C is 200mm. If the shaft is in complete dynamic balance, determine: (i) The magnitude of the masses at A and D; (ii) the distance between planes A and D; and (iii) angular position of the mass at D. (16)

15. A shaft carries four masses A, B, C and D of magnitude 200kg, 300kg, 400kg and 200kg respectively and revolving at radii 80mm, 70mm, 60mm and 80mm in planes measured anticlockwise are A to B is 45, B to C 70 and C to D 120. The balancing masses are to be placed in planes X and Y. The distance between the planes A and X is 100mm, between X and Y is 400mm and between Y and D is 200mm. If the balancing masses revolve at a radius of 100mm, find their magnitudes and angular positions. (16) *** All the Best ***
