3.6 Notes
It is required that the controlling PC runs Windows 98/2000/XP and that PC is equipped

with standard DB9 serial port RS232.

The demo program and API dynamic link libraries will be supplied by orangeTags.

4. System Installation

RFID Reader Installation

The reader (mounted in a metal case) should be installed in a weather-proof location with

enough room, at least 15cm from rear panel, for cable assembly. The environmental should

fall within -10~ +50°C with humidity ideally less then 90%. The range between OTR-990

reader and RF antenna should be no more than 5 meters.

4.1 RF Antenna Installation

Mount the RF antenna on an overhead structure facing downwards (angled down approx.

26 degrees to the tag location at a height within the antenna range) or vertically on a pole to

such height that the horizontal centreline of the antenna is in-line with the object identification

direction.

Always ensure the surface of the tag is as parallel to the antenna as possible and the

tagged is moving into the field towards the antenna, as opposed to moving across the

field. It is recommended that you use a standard camera mounting bracket that allows

angling up and down.

Do NOT power on the reader while connecting it to the antenna otherwise the reader

may be damaged.

4.3 Communication Cable Installation

Connect the communication cable from the OTR-990 reader to a serial port on the controlling

PC as per Fig. 5 below.

Fig.5 Connection for RS232 interface

The communication between the reader and other equipment is achived through Wiegand

interface. There are two Wiegand ports: WGA and for the respective corresponding

antennas ANT1 and ANT2 (refer to Fig. 6).

● Sample Connection of Wiegand Interface (see Fig.7)

The connection is between one Reader and two Antenna. A standard connection if

used in a Vehicle Parking Entrance and Exit application.

Fig. 7

5. RFID Reader System Start-Up

The RFID reader system has two operation modes: stand-alone mode and online mode.

The stand-alone mode is the communication between the OTR-9990 reader and

equipment. The online mode is the communication between the OTR-9990 reader and

PC.

The stand-alone mode connection is shown below in Fig. 8. No short circuit connection is

needed for online mode.

5.1 Power Supply

There are two input power supply options: - Main AC or external DC 12V (PWR on the

front of the reader). After completing the system installation, connect the power cable

from the reader to an AC 220V power source.

Note that to turn the power on without completeing installation will damage the

reader.

The LED1 indicator will light to indicate power on and then will flash for 2 seconds,

to indicate that the system start-up has been completed.

6. Demo Test Software and API Package

The supply of OTR990 series UHF reader system covers a set of Demo Test Software

and Applicable Programming Interface (API) package for the user to test and further

develop the system. For details, please refer to Demo Test Software Manual and API

User Manual in a separate document.

7. Value-added Function

There are some value-added functions supplied for users option.

a) Write Function b) TCP/ IP (LAN) Interface

c) Data Local Storage e) Tag Encryption / Authorization (OTR990A)

d) Local Time Set

8. Important Notes for System Application

It is very important to note the following points during the reader system operation to

ensure that the system is always on the appropriate operation status and to minimize the

risks of equipment damage.

● Polarization direction between reader and tags should match each other. It is ideal

that the tags are applied so that they approximately face the reader (parallel to the

reader's surface) and to rotate the tag to a right angle if reading fails.

Confidential Page 9 9/6/2006

OTR990 User Manual

● Our current tag is not suited for metal or liquid surfaces which may absorb the

microwaves. Special tags are neccssory.

● During on-site testing or setting-up of the system, the human body and tag should

not be too close (at least 50cm away) to the antenna.

● Where applicable, the recommended mounting area for a tag in a parking

application is the lower left corner of a car's windshield and at least 15cm away

from both edges when placed.

● Tests on tag are to be taken for different windowshields of vehicle to ensure

application stability.

● In case metal content explosive-proof film is stuck on the windowshield, a

15x20cm2 opening should be cut on the film and the tag put inside the opening.

● To achieve non-stop access of vehicle, it is recommended that the barrier bar is

installed 5-8 meters away from antenna.

● To achieve the ideal reading and identification distance in the case where the
antenna is mounted on its sideface, it is required that the center of the antenna is

2.5 meters away from the ground with the center of mounting rod 50cm away from

the edge of the roadway.

● In general, the reading and identification distance of the system depends on

antenna gain value, the angle of tag and antenna, object material where the tag is

put on and the surroundings. Ensure there are no metal materials near the

antenna.
