What is the Foundation Year?


Foundation Year course title BSc (Hons) Dental Technology UCAS Code B841 Duration 4FT or 5SW The Foundation Year is designed for students who dont have the qualifications to enter directly onto an honours degree at MMU. The course helps you to develop the academic knowledge and study skills necessary to be successful on your degree course. If you pass the Foundation Year you will continue onto Year 1 of your chosen degree at MMU. The MMU Foundation Year: Provides a route onto your chosen degree course if you dont meet the entry requirements e.g. if you dont have sufficient tariff points or if you havent studied the specific A Level subjects needed for entry to your chosen degree. Has content that is tailored so that it is appropriate to your chosen degree. Helps you to develop the study skills and academic knowledge you will need to start Year 1 of your degree course with confidence.

How is the Foundation Year structured?


All full-time students study 120 credits of subject and support material. The course is divided into units, most of which are worth 30 credits and so most students would take four 30 credit units. Teaching is delivered via a range of methods including lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical workshops, PC lab sessions, online material and self study time. Assessment is normally through a combination of formal examinations taken in the Summer term and coursework completed during the Autumn and Spring terms.

Language option (15 credits) You can choose to study a foreign language during the Foundation Year, taking the Data, Evidence and Images unit as a 15 credit unit in Term 1, followed by a 15 credit language unit in Term 2. Languages available include Arabic, Chinese, English as a Foreign Language, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. These can be studied at a number of different levels from Beginners to Advanced.

What are the entry requirements?


The University is undertaking a review of the Foundation Year with a view to making this programme more accessible to those who are currently underrepresented in higher education e.g. those from low participation postcodes, nontraditional backgrounds, or first generation entrants. The typical minimum entry requirements for the dental technology linked degree are currently 80 UCAS tariff points at A2 or equivalent (such as BTEC National at Level 3 or Advanced Diploma). We also accept other Level 3 qualifications e.g. NVQ Level 3, CACHE Level 3, Access to HE Diploma. You will also need grade D or above in GCSE mathematics and English or Key Skills Level 2 in Application of Number and Communication. Equivalent qualifications and/or experience will be considered. International students will be placed on the Foundation Year International Route, which offers extra English language and study skills support. International students will need equivalent qualifications to the above and proficiency in English to at least IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 525, TOEFL computer based test 193 or TOEFL internet based test 69. How do I progress to the next stage of my degree?


Successful completion of the Foundation Year guarantees automatic progression onto Year 1 of the degree you have chosen to study at MMU. During the Foundation Year you will be studying at our All Saints Campus on Oxford Road, based in the John Dalton Building. What will I study?


You will study the following units during the Foundation Year. Academic Skills for Higher Education (30 credits) All Foundation Year students study this unit, which will help you to develop the academic and study skills required for degree-level work. Foundations for Dental Technology (30 credits) An introduction to the techniques used in dental technology and their application. Foundation Chemistry (30 credits) Introduces you to key concepts in chemistry and provides a platform of knowledge for continuation onto your linked degree. Data, Evidence and Images (15 or 30 credits) Helps you to develop the critical thinking and information analysis skills
