About Symantec pcAnywhere
Symantec pcAnywhere provides secure, remote access to computers
and servers. Symantec pcAnywhere supports network connections
over a local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), or the
Internet, modem-to-modem connections, and direct cable connections
using a serial or parallel port.

Cross-platform support
Symantec pcAnywhere provides the following new features to support
connections across platforms:
■ Linux® Host
The Linux Host lets you deploy a host to a computer that runs
Linux, and then connect. This feature lets users who are
accustomed to working in a Windows® environment remotely
manage Linux systems. You configure and deploy the Linux Host
using the Quick Deploy and Connect feature in Symantec
pcAnywhere.
■ Symantec pcAnywhere Web Remote
The Web Remote lets you remotely connect to another computer
using a Web browser. You can run the Web Remote from a
Windows or Linux computer and connect to host computers that
run Windows or Linux. The Web Remote runs as an applet that is
embedded in the Web browser. You do not need to install the Web
Remote. You can run it from the installation CD, a server, hard
drive, or other removable media.

Starting the installation
Before you install any of the pcAnywhere installation
options, ensure that your computer meets the system
requirements. Review the Readme file on the installation
CD for any known issues.
For more information about system requirements and for
installation procedures, see the Symantec pcAnywhere
User’s Guide.
Users on Windows NT/2000/2003 Server/XP must have
administrator rights to install pcAnywhere.
For more information about how to determine whether you
have administrator rights or for information about how to
change or add users, see your Windows documentation.
To start the installation
1 Insert the Symantec pcAnywhere CD into the CD-ROM
drive.
2 In the pcAnywhere installation window, select the
option that you want to install.

3 Follow the on-screen instructions.
If the installation window does not appear automatically
after you insert the pcAnywhere installation CD, manually
run the setup program, and then continue with the
installation procedures.

Ways to start a connection
The first time that you start Symantec pcAnywhere after
installation, the Connection Wizard automatically opens.
The Connection Wizard simplifies the process of
configuring your computer for a pcAnywhere connection.
