Listening, Speaking, Writing-2, Finding information 36-37
Lets summarize key points from the article.
Whose footprints? Carbon footprints!
Tuvalu, an island located in the Pacifc Ocean, is on the verge of sinking under the
sea. The island is flled with water for ffteen days every month, which leaves less
space for people to live in. The Chacaltaya glacier in Bolivia used to be the worlds
highest ski run but now it has been reduced to just a few pieces of ice. Why are
these things happening?
Greenhouse gas emission has increased due
to the use of fossil fuels such as coal and oil.
A huge amount of greenhouse gases have
also been emitted in the process of waste
decomposition. In addition, disappearing
forests have reduced natures ability to
absorb greenhouse gases. All these are
causing global warming.
Global warming describes the rise of the average temperature of the Earth, and
is caused by the heat from the Earth which is trapped due to increasing green-
house gases in the air. It is the main reason for the fooding of Tuvalu and
melting of the Chacaltaya glacier.
So what does global warming and climate change have to do with a carbon
footprint?
A carbon footprint is the fgure which shows the total amount of emitted
greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, caused by humankind in kilogram
(kg) or in number of trees.
We can reduce our carbon footprint if we unplug the home appliances not in
use and cut the use of disposable products such as paper cups and wooden
chopsticks.
Besides these efforts, what else can we do to reduce our carbon footprint?
7
1. What is the main point of this article? Fill in the blanks and think about
the main point. Underline the important ideas in the article to help you
fnd the main points.
2. What can we do to reduce our carbon footprint?
The use of fossil fuels and waste
disposal are increasing while the
forests are disappearing.
We need to make an effort to
reduce ( ).
The increase of greenhouse gases
in the air causes ( ),
which is raising the Earths
temperature.
Tuvalu is sinking under the water

The Power of New & Renewable Energy!
The world currently has reserves for only 40 years of oil, 65 years of gas and 155
years of coal, so many countries are trying to develop new & renewable energy.
1. The following is the description of different types of energy.
Write down the right type of energy from the box below for each
description.
Fossil Fuel, New Energy, Renewable Energy
Humans have been using a lot of
this energy. Along with petroleum
and coal, natural gas is also a source
of this energy.
This energy converts existing fos-
sil fuels for use. In addition to the
fuel cells, hydrogen energy and
coal liquefaction are also used for
this energy.
This energy uses renewable sources
such as sunlight and water. It uses
not only solar light and wind but
also solar heat, water, tide, waste,
geothermal and biomass.

Lets read the passage and compare it with your own ideas.
A Promise to protect the Earth
April 22 each year is Earth Day. When and why was the Earth Day founded? As
citizens of the Earth, what kind of promises can we make for the Earth?
In 1969, an oil spill occurred off the
beautiful coast of Santa Barbara,
California, U.S. and caused terrible
environmental pollution around the
area.
After this incident, a United States
Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed
founding of Earth Day to raise public awareness of the environment.
The frst Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 with a Harvard
graduate student, Denis Hayes.
In the 1980s, other countries started to join and celebrate Earth Day. In
1990, over 200 million people in 140 nations participated in the Earth
Day event and in 2002, 5,000 environmental groups in 184 countries
around the world were on board.
Earth Day is now a global event, alerting people of environmental prob-
lems such as environmental pollution and the destruction of the ecosys-
tem.
A variety of environmental events are held on Earth Day including a
tree-planting program, a river cleaning project, Earth Expo and cultural
events.
We cannot live a single day without the Earth. We have to think and act
as if every day is Earth Day, not just one day in April.
13
1. The following promises are what we can do to protect the Earth.
Choose three promises and put them into action for one week,
then evaluate your own actions.

What is Slow Food?
Slow Food is a movement which began to preserve traditional foods and food
cultures and to encourage the use of local food products. When, where and how
did the Slow Food movement begin?
The Slow Food movement began
in 1986 to preserve traditional
Italian food culture when a fast
food restaurant was opened near
the Spanish Steps in Rome, Italy.
The movement has since expanded
globally and has over 80,000 mem-
bers in more than 100 countries. A slow snail is the symbol of this
movement.
The phrase Slow Food is a combination of words Slow and
Food which refers to highly-nutritious, healthy, unprocessed foods
including a variety of different recipes. Slow Food uses less meat and
focuses on traditional, local ingredients, thus producing less carbon
dioxide.
So, what kind of food is slow food, and how does it benefit both
the Earth environment and our health?
Kimchi chigae (spicy kimchi stew), Doenjang chigae (soybean paste
stew) and Bibimbap are some of the representative slow foods in
Korea.

We have a mine in Seoul !
The Seoul Metropolitan Government is working on an urban mining project by collecting
raw materials from discarded electronic devices. The urban mining project is being
considered as a good solution for resolving the problem of a lack of resources.
Urban mining collects precious metals such as gold, silver and bronze from
discarded cell phones, computers and other electronic devices from homes
and businesses. These thrown away items are waste when they are sent to the
landfll, but they can turn into a resource if you recycle them.

Eco-Mileage is a program to encourage people to voluntarily reduce the amount
of electricity, water, gas, and other energy they use at home, school and work. The
aim of the program is to involve citizens to actively participate in the efforts to
resolve the challenges caused by climate change. The Seoul Metropolitan Government
gives incentives to the citizens and organizations who have earned Eco-miles to
encourage the citizens to join the effort to protect the Earth.

Social Studies-3-(2) Environmental issues and solutions of my city
Lets learn about the issues that my city and other cities have to work together.
Lets solve the problem together!
Many environmental problems may occur in your city. Then, how can
we solve these problems within our city, and work together with other cities?
Citizen monitors investigate this facility to see whether it is receiving
waste properly.
1. The Nowon district in the city of Seoul built a Resource Recovery
Facility to take care of the waste generated in the city to prevent
environmental pollution. Read the following article and write one
of the efforts they are making.
The Resource Recovery Facility is a
plant which incinerates the trash in a
hygienic way and recycles energy by
collecting the heat generated from the
incineration of trash.
The Nowon Resource Recovery Facility
founded in 1997, was transformed into a shape which looks like a magic
box in 2009 (picture above) and the plant improved its facilities to reduce
pollutants generated from incineration.
Citizen monitors work independently to investigate the facility to en-
sure that the trash enters the facility properly, the facility is being oper-

other areas. Underline how the problem is being solved.
Han River
Anyangcheon
(stream)
In 1999, two districts in the city of
Seoul, Gurogu and Yangcheongu,
established the Council for Improv-
ing Water Quality of Anyangcheon
together with 13 local governments
around Anyangcheon area including
Anyang-si, Gunpo-si, Uiwang-si and
Gwangmyeong-si at the Gyeonggi
Province, and launched a project for
cooperation between local govern-
ments to rehabilitate Anyangcheon.
They established a water recycling
center and made an effort to recover the ecosystem of the upper part of
the Anyangcheon. These efforts paid off and the water quality of Any-
angcheon, which used to be one of the most polluted streams in Korea
until the mid 1990s, has improved signifcantly in mid 2000s.
As the water quality got better, the fsh which left the stream came back
and it is now observed that minnows spawn in the stream. The stream
has changed into a habitat for migrating birds, particularly white her-
ons, gray herons and egrets in summer and mallards, white wagtails,
snipes and plovers in winter.
Anyangcheon is now home to various kinds of fsh species such as Chi-
nese minnows, which live only in the cleanest water, and wild birds
such as spot bills.
