THIS IS A HAMMER: By Samantha Mazzotta Repairing Damaged Drywall Q: Last week while moving furniture, my sons accidentally shoved an end table against the wall and punched a hole in it. How can I fix this? -Charity in Lansing, Mich. A: Ouch! Fortunately, drywall holes are not too expensive a proposition in terms of repair. You can even get your sons to help, turning an accident into a learning experience. For supplies, you'll need a power drill (for driving screws), a putty knife, a drywall/wallboard saw, a box cutter or drywall knife, drywall tape (a type of mesh tape), a drywall repair patch (a large, self-sticking mesh that can be cut to fit), drywall compound, sandpaper and matching paint. If the hole is pretty large -- more than a couple of inches in diameter - you will need a spare sheet or piece of drywall (also called wallboard in some places), as well as scraps of plywood and drywall screws. For small holes, less than an inch or two in diameter, brush away debris and ease any jagged edges back into position. Cut away dangling or sharp edges. Grab a peel-and-stick repair patch, trimming if needed so that the edges extend at least an inch beyond the edges of the hole. Stick in place. With the putty knife, smooth on one coat of drywall compound, feathering the edges into the wall. Let it dry and smooth on a second coat. Once that is completely dry, sand the compound smooth, then paint to match the surrounding area. Note: If you have wallpaper instead of paint, you can patch the wall the same way and then patch with a matching scrap piece of wallpaper. Larger holes need more support than a plain mesh can provide, so you'll need to replace the damaged drywall. Using a ruler and pencil, draw a square around the edges of the hole, giving about a quarter inch of space from each jagged edge. Next, carefully cut away the drywall, following those lines. Now you have a clean square to work with. Next insert those spare plywood strips. These go behind the drywall hole, providing a backing for your drywall patch to attach to. Hold each strip in place and drive a drywall screw through the drywall about 1/2 inch above the hole and 1/2 inch below. Next, cut your drywall patch to fit the hole. It actually needs to be a tiny bit smaller than the hole, about 1/8 inch, so the patch blends better. Press the patch against the plywood backing strips and drive screws through the patch, two at the top and two at the bottom, and into the backing strips. Finally, blend the patch in. Run mesh drywall tape over the edges of the patch so that it covers the gaps. Then, smooth drywall compound over the mesh tape, feathering into the wall (you don't have to put compound over the center of the patch). Finish the same way as described for the smaller patch. HOME TIP: If sanding drywall compound creates too much dust, try smoothing using a damp sponge or wet sander, then let dry completely before painting the area. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. STRANGE BUT TRUE: by Samantha Weaver California Tech conducted a study in which consumers were offered two samples of the same wine, but each sample was labeled at a different price point. Unaware that the wines they were drinking were identical, most participants said they preferred the more expensive sample. If youre planning a trip to Turkey, be sure to book a stay at the Marmara Antalya on the countrys southern coast. This unique hotel revolves, offering ever-changing views of the Mediterranean Sea to its guests. Are you a phonophile? If so, you might be finding it hard to pursue your passion in this digital age -- a phonophile (also known as a gramophile) is a collector of phonograph records. DOLLARS AND SENSE BY David Uffington Dont Delay! Opt Out of Online Databases Delete Yourself From Online Databases There is a new step to be taken these days when it comes to guarding your credit: look yourself up online. There are dozens of online sites that assemble public records and publicly available information and offer it for sale. Information that can be purchased includes telephone number, home address, real estate deed, professional licensing, lawsuits, births, divorces, marriages, deaths, household demographics. Bankruptcies, email address, felonies and tax liens can be included, and so much more. Some of them will provide a satellite map with an arrow pointing to your house. Lets say you look up your name on a site such as Intelius.com. Youll likely find the name of your spouse and children next to yours. To your surprise you might find someone elses name listed as well. This might be your first clue that someone has stolen your identity and has taken out a loan or made a purchase, combining your information. If this happens to you, act quickly. Call one of the credit bureaus and instigate a credit alert. One is required to tell both of the other two, so youre saved that step. Go to creditreport.com and order your credit reports from all three bureaus. Read them carefully when they arrive. While youre waiting, opt out of as many online database sites as you can. Most of them dont make it easy, but the fewer places that have your information, the better. Often there is an opt-out page, but youll have to hunt for it. Youll need a photo file of your drivers license with the photo and number blacked out. Youll have to upload or fax that information as well as specify which name you wish to have them delete. This can be tricky: You might be listed as first name and last name, or your middle initial might be included, or your first two initials might be used instead of names. Ask for all of them to be deleted. Youll need to check again every few months. The reason: As more and more databases are sharing their records, or as you make transactions, your name could come up again. Youll need to delete it every time you find your name appearing. As a general rule, when you open a new account, opt out of having your information shared. Its no guarantee that your name wont get out, but its a small step. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com.

A Guardian Elder Care Facility
PAW'S CORNER: By Sam Mazzotta Puppy Isn't Growing DEAR PAW'S CORNER: We adopted a beautiful, fluffy pup at a nearby shelter. A worker there described it as a Russian sheepdog. She said "Curty" should grow up into a large dog with a lot of energy. So far, I haven't found this to be true. Curty hasn't grown much beyond his height when we adopted him, and he doesn't seem to have the energy I have seen in shepherd breeds, although he is pretty playful and was easy to housebreak. Are there any health problems he might have, or do we just have a mixed breed dog that isn't going to take on purebred characteristics? -- Jerry C., Burlington, Vt. DEAR JERRY: There are several types of sheepdogs hailing from Russia and surrounding regions, so it's hard to say exactly which breed you have. Indeed, you may have a mixed-breed dog, if the shelter wasn't able to provide any information on Curty's former home. The best thing to do is take Curty to the veterinarian for a checkup. Explain that he isn't growing as fast as you thought he would and that he doesn't have a lot of energy. The vet can check for any signs of underlying health issues. Curty could be a perfectly healthy pup, but just a mixed-breed dog who is developing normally and won't be very big. An even-tempered, playful, well-socialized, easy-to-train dog isn't a bad thing. But do make sure that he's healthy and that there are no hidden health problems. Send your question or comment to ask@pawscorner.com, or write to Paw's Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. What are you polishing? A young man bought an expensive gold watch from a jeweler. Soon, the man brought it back to the jeweler, demanding a new case. The case looked like brass, not gold, and the man had paid for gold. The jeweler looked at the case, rubbed it a little, and then asked the young man, Are you taking any supplements that have extra iron in them? Well, said the young man, yes, I am. Okay, the jeweler said, then thats the problem. The extra iron comes out with your perspiration and has tarnished the case. And he took a cloth and polished and buffed the watch until it shone again with all of its original golden luster. You know, were like this young man, his watch, and iron. What is inside of us always comes to the surface. And sometimes whats inside of us tarnishes what we polish so hard, things like our reputation. So make sure you polish not just whats on the surface, but polish whats inside of you as well as you Work Positive and Live Positive today. A public service message brought to you by

Gregory McCraith, DDS and Jen Hogue, dental assistant from The Gundlah Dental Center at Olean General Hospital examine the teeth of Lilly Ann Hanigan an Olean Head Start student. Olean, NY- The Gundlah Dental Center team received $125,000 from the CHOMPERS Bringing Dental Care to Kids grant from the Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York. The grant provides funds for portable dental equipment to conduct free dental screenings, fillings, cleanings and educational programs for over 300 children, ages zero to three years old, enrolled in the Olean, Salamanca, Delevan and Warsaw Head Start programs. As a part of the grant, each childs dental care needs are assessed and we teach them and their families about dental care - how to brush, the importance of flossing and protecting their teeth, said Colette McCaslin, manager of The Gundlah Dental Center at Olean General Hospital. Dental disease is the single most common childhood disease in the United States and was classified by the U.S. Surgeon General as a silent epidemic in 2010. In New York State, 54% of all children have at least one cavity by the time they reach third grade according to the 2005-2008 New York State Oral Health Surveillance data. While the problem is widespread and prevalent, most dental disease is preventable, said Gregory McCraith, DDS of The Gundlah Dental Center at Olean General Hospital. So, we are grateful to receive grants that help us improve childrens oral health by bringing dental care into the schools. In an effort to address pediatric dental health needs in the region, The Gundlah Dental Center at Olean General Hospital has also received past grants from the New York State Department of Health for sealant and fluoride treatments in local schools. The portable dental health services program is a miracle, said Theresa Wells, health coordinator of Head Start. Before the Gundlah Dental Center provided this service, we could not offer dental care to Medicaid patients in the convenience of our own facility. For more information, contact The Gundlah Dental Center at Olean General Hospital 716-375-7300 or visit www.ogh.org Olean General Hospital is a member of Upper Allegheny Health System. fb

HOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD -- It looks like "The Lone Ranger" won't be riding again as soon as expected. As we reported earlier, Armie Hammer of "The Social Network" was cast in the title role, with Johnny Depp set to play his trusted companion, Tonto. The Jerry Bruckheimer production was budgeted at $250 million, which Disney balked at, demanding the budget be slashed to $200 million. You'd think with the billions Bruckheimer and Depp made for Disney on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, it would give them what they want -- but times are tough! In the meantime, Depp has "The Rum Diary," a film based on an early novel by journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Depp plays a writer who leaves New York in the 1950s to write for a newspaper in Puerto Rico and becomes a heavy drinker and

womanizer. Sounds like my kind of a job! The film, due out Oct. 28, also stars Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Jenkins and Amber Heard of "Pineapple Express" and "Zombieland." Meanwhile, the script for "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" has been completed, but Depp wants a break before he dives into that character again. Armie Hammer, who has completed work on Clint Eastwood's "Edgar" film about FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover, is about to play the prince in "The Brothers Grimm: Snow White." Lily Collins, daughter of pop singer Phil Collins, has the title role, with Julia Roberts as the evil witch and Nathan Lane along for comic relief.

Remember When?

Shakespeare who endorses this theory. How much higher would our grades have been in English class if we hadn't had to read all those long, hard-to-understand plays? Finally, did you believe that roast last week of Charlie Sheen? Is there no level to which he will stoop? It wasn't enough that he nearly lost the jobs and income of the cast and crew of "Two and a Half Men" with his tirades, but he believed he could harm the reboot of the show by scheduling his roast opposite the premiere of his replacement, Ashton Kutcher. During the low-class ... no, strike that ... no-class roast, Sheen was referred to as "a drug addict," "an abuser of women," "a connoisseur of porn stars and prostitutes," "a horrible actor" and "a reckless loser" -- and those are the nicer things we could print. In other words, he's a loser, a bruiser and a boozer! (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.
MOMENTS IN TIME On Oct. 12, 1915, British nurse Edith Cavell is executed by a German firing squad in Brussels for helping Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I. Cavell was honored

with a statue in St. Martin's Place, just off London's Trafalgar Square. On Oct. 11, 1923, in a botched robbery attempt, three men blow up the mail car of a Southern Pacific train carrying passengers through southern Oregon. The explosives the thieves intended to use to open the mail car were too powerful, and the entire mail car was blown to bits. On Oct. 10, 1957, the Milwaukee Braves defeat the New York Yankees in seven games to win their first World Series since 1914. No one expected the Braves to win, as the New York team had already won the championship 21 times. Thought for the Day: You know you're getting old when you stoop to tie your shoelaces and wonder what else you could do while you're down there. -- George Burns (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. *** It often amuses me to hear men impute all their misfortunes to fate, luck or destiny, whilst their successes or good fortune they ascribe to their own sagacity, cleverness or penetration. -Samuel Taylor Coleridge *** If you reveal your secrets to the wind, you should not blame the wind for revealing them to the trees. -Kahlil Gibran

Johnny Depp Ever wonder how William Shakespeare found time to write all those complicated plays? That question is posed by the Oct. 28 release of "Anonymous." Scholars have wondered for years if Shakespeare's plays were written by him or penned by others, such as The Earl of Oxford, for one. Their argument is presented with the help of award-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave, her daughter Joely Redgrave, David Thewlis and Derek Jacobi, an authority on

Back then, in 1781, there were just 52 settlers to start what is now the second most populous city in the country. When speaking of dead languages, Latin is the one that probably comes to mind most often. Its not quite dead, though; its the official language of Vatican City. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. By Tresa Erickson While some couples opt not to have children at their wedding, others do. They take great delight in young children and cant fathom having a celebration without them. If you share in this feeling and would like to have children at your wedding, make sure you plan for them accordingly. If at all possible, hold your wedding in the morning or afternoon. The later your wedding is, the more likely your young guests will become tired and act out of sorts. Those accustomed to going to bed around 8 oclock may even fall asleep during the celebration, forcing parents to leave early. Look for a venue that is child friendly. Dont select a hotel with a lot

Wee Ones Welcome

of fine antiques. Young guests will be too tempted to touch all of the wonderful things surrounding them. Select a hotel with modern decor and make sure there are rooms nearby where young guests can nap if needed. Ask your ushers to seat all parents with young kids near the back of the room during the ceremony so they can leave quickly if needed. Provide ample entertainment. Even the best-behaved children act up when they get tired and bored. To prevent this at your reception, hand out crayons and coloring books to little ones at tables and set up an area where children can play after dinner. If most of your young guests can handle sitting by themselves, you could set up a separate table for them where they

could sit, draw and color together. Just make sure you have an adult on hand to supervise the action. If you have the budget, consider bringing in a clown, magician or some other form of entertainment for your young guests. If you are having your reception outdoors, rent a bouncy castle and find a volunteer to supervise the operation. You might

and drink on hand. Provide snacks and beverages for young guests before dinner to alleviate any hunger pains they might be having. Then serve them a meal they will eat. Children do like to eat, but that doesnt mean they will like what you are serving at your reception. For the best results, consult with your caterer and create a child-friendly menu for younger guests. Serve chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese in lieu of lemon chicken and rice. Your younger guests will appreciate it, and so will their parents. These are just some of the accommodations you can make for your young guests to ensure everyone has a good time. Keep in mind you may need to take fewer or additional measures depending upon the number of young guests at your wedding. If you are planning on five or six youngsters, then you may be able to have an evening wedding at an elite hotel. If you are planning on 10 to 20 youngsters, then you may need to set your wedding for an earlier

even arrange for a group of volunteers to serve as babysitters and whisk the kids off to another room for hours of fun while their parents enjoy the reception. Finally, make sure you have plenty of food time and bring in some entertainment. If your budget allows, you could always hire a professional on-site babysitting service and leave the supervising and entertaining to them!

The Tuxedo-Fashioned after a coat worn by the Prince of Wales, Griswold Lorillard, a tobacco heir, in 1886, wore a tail-less black dinner jacket to an autumn ball in Tuxedo Park, New York and sent his contemporaries into a spin. The Bridal Veil-Traced back to superstitious Roman ceremonies, the veil was originally used to confuse evil spirits that might be jealous of the new couples happiness. By covering her face they averted recognition of the new bride and although the fear no longer exists, beautiful veils are used by many happy brides. The Garter--In the days of silk stockings this accessory was a necessity. Considered fair sport and good luck in old England to steal the garter and stockings before the ceremony, young unmarried gentlemen took the challenge seriously.

Traditional Tidbits

The throwing of the garter evolved to prevent the embarrassment of the overturned young lady. The Bridal Purse-Traditionally matching the bridal gown, this useful accessory was also a part of the traditional dollar dance. Buying a new dance from the new bride by secretly~ slipping cash into her purse helped the young woman acquire pin money to start her new household. The Ring--The symbols of unending love and fidelity, the origin of the ring can be traced back to the Egyptians who presented their brides circlets of hemp or rush every year. The Ring Pillow-All through history ornate pillows have been used to present crowns to royalty. Placing the rings prominently on a pillow is the most honored way to present the most cherished of all gifts.

By Healthy Exchanges Italian Vegetable Relish Zucchini happens to be one of those vegetables that gets far too little respect. I think it might be because its vines are so proficient. No matter how good something is, when its overabundant, it somehow is taken for granted. Try this ultra-easy relish, and others just might ask you, Where in the world did you come up with this great recipe? 1 1/2 cups finely chopped unpeeled zucchini 1 cup shredded carrots 1/4 cup finely chopped green and/or red bell pepper 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1/2 cup fat-free Italian dressing In a medium bowl, combine zucchini, carrots, pepper and onion. NEW HORIZONS FORUM ANNOUNCES SCHEDULE FOR FALL 2011 Alfred, NY, September 2011- Dr. Choichiro Yatani, Alfred State College professor of psychology, will lead off the Fall 2011 New Horizons Forum Series. Professor Yatanis talk, Personal Is Political: Threats to Scholarly Expression, is drawn from his numerous scholarly publications and presentations. Scheduled for Wednesday evening, Sept, 28, in the Allegany Room of the Central Dining Hall on the Alfred campus from 78:30 p.m. Forum director SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus Joe Flynn notes that the evening will include media records of The Yatani Case which documents the personal struggle and public uproar surrounding Yatanis 44 days of incarceration in the summer of 1986 in a New York City federal prison upon his return from presenting a scholarly paper in the Netherlands. At the time, Yatani was a doctoral candidate at SUNY Stony Brook on Long Island where he lived with his wife Nana and their two young children. Since his undergraduate days in Japan during the Vietnam War, Yatani has been committed to building cultures of peace with justice. Whether or not a scholars vision and work can or should be successfully isolated from the shaping forces of ones sociopolitical-cultural context invites continuing debate. The presentation is designed to promote vigorous audience discussion. Future Forum speakers and their topics include: Tues., Oct. 11: Dr. Kasey Klingensmith, professor of biology (Keuka College), Understanding the Marcellus Shale, Engineering Technology Building, Room 215, 6:30-8 p.m. Wed., Oct. 26: ASC Professor Jeffrey Johnston, School of Management and Engineering Technology Department, Sorrento Spring Semesters, place and time TBA. Wed., Nov. 2: ASC Professor Dr. Steve Jakobi, Physical and Health Sciences Department, The Challenges of Saving the American Chestnut, Allegany Room, Central Dining Hall, 78:30 p.m. Wed., Nov. 16: Nadine Hoover, Alfred, author, international consultant, and massage therapist, Conscience, Peace, and Healing: Always Local, Always Global, Allegany Room, Central Dining Hall, 7-8:30 p.m. Thurs., Dec. 1: Norm Ellis, ASC professor, Building Trades Department, Restoring New Orleans, place and time TBA. The New Horizons Forum is sponsored by the School of Arts and Sciences and offers programs which showcase scholarly, creative, and public service work currently engaged in by faculty, students, professional staff, and invited guests. It is guided by a campus-wide team of advisers whose goal is to enrich the intellectual life of the institution. Despite a tough season in 2011, former top NASCAR rookie Juan Pablo Montoya says he loves working at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo) Struggling Montoya Stays Optimistic Juan Pablo Montoya began competing regularly in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series in 2007. He was named Rookie of the Year, which came as no surprise since Montoya is one of the racing world's more recognizable names, not to mention one of its prodigious talents. Yet Montoya -- who won the CART championship in 1999 as a rookie, won the Indianapolis 500 in 2000 and the Grand Prix of Monaco in 2003 -- has yet to blossom into full-fledge stock-car stardom. Montoya, who just turned 36, is the first foreign-born driver to win more than once in Cup competition. Both his victories have oc-

curred on road courses. He made the Chase for the Sprint Cup in 2009. Entering the rain-delayed Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, Montoya, who is from Bogota, Colombia, but now lives in Miami, ranked 18th in the point standings. It's been a dreary season not just for Montoya, but for his team, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. Montoya's teammate, Jamie McMurray, had slumped to 25th entering the Chicagoland race. "I think the No. 1 car (McMurray) has been having a really rough season, and they have been trying to change things around, and it hasn't really come to them," Montoya said. "They have had a couple of decent results, but overall it has been a really hard season for them. "For us, we have been up and down. We can get a top-five (finish) here and there, and fight for a win there, and then run 30th. It is something ... we need to understand why it is, and lately it has been getting harder and harder. I think our cars need to get better. We looked at some numbers and stuff, and there is some work to be done. It is going to be interesting." If Montoya is growing weary of struggling, he hasn't admitted it. He insists he is happy with the principal owner, Chip Ganassi. "He's a good guy to work for," Montoya said. "Like everybody else, he's got his good days, and really bad days. "You've got to make sure, when you talk to him, you've got him on a good day."

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson A Tip From JoAnn: I like bottled water, but it's expensive and creates a lot of waste. I have plenty of reusable bottles, but bottled water always seemed more convenient and, frankly, better. I found that what I really like is to take a bottle of very cold water out of the fridge and drink it, so instead of storing those reusable bottles in the cabinet, I fill them straight from the dishwasher and put them in the fridge. Now I have the convenience of bottled without spending the money, and I'm happy I am not creating waste.

Here's a trick for removing hardwater stains on windows or glass doors: Apply full-strength fabric softener to surface. Let dry, then use a wet cloth to remove, rinsing the cloth frequently. Hang a bag of clothespins near the laundry basket. Then if something has a stain that needs to be addressed, put a clip on it before adding it to the basket. This way, you'll know what to pretreat on wash day. -- D.W. in Washington To keep pants on a hanger from creasing, I slit a paper towel cardboard roll and slip it over the hanger. I tape it together and then put the pants over it. This has worked for me for many years. -I.R. in Nebraska Got a grease stain on your shirt? Cover it with baking soda right away. The baking soda will absorb the oil. Repeat several times and launder as quickly as you can. Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver The first traffic signal, which began operating in Cleveland in 1914, wasnt much of a laborsaver. To operate it, a police officer had to sit in a nearby booth where he could oversee the traffic. Those who study such things claim that at any given moment, there are 850,000 people inside a Walmart store. And thats just in the United States theres no telling how many people are shopping at Walmarts abroad. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

At a time of economic turmoil in France, she lived extravagantly and responded to news that the French peasantry had no bread to eat by callously replying, "Let them eat cake." On Oct. 15, 1965, David Miller, a young Catholic pacifist, becomes the first U.S. war protestor to burn his draft card in direct violation of a law forbidding such acts. He was later arrested, tried, found guilty and sentenced to two years imprisonment. On Oct. 13, 1975, singer Charlie Rich protests John Denver's big win at the Country Music Association Awards. Standing onstage to announce that year's winner, Rich opened the envelope, saw Denver's name written inside, reached into his pocket for a cigarette lighter and set the envelope on fire. MOMENTS IN TIME: The History Channel On Oct. 14, 1857, engineer and inventor Elwood Haynes is born in Portland, Ind. Haynes designed one of the very first American automobiles, the Haynes "Pioneer," a 820-pound, open-bodied, push-start vehicle with chain drive, a steering tiller, 28-inch bicycle wheels and a onecylinder, one-horsepower gasoline engine. It had room for only one person and could not go in reverse. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. A: Your television set -- with a five-channel tuner -- is extremely rare. It was manufactured in 1939, has a 5-inch screen and is worth about $15,000. *** Q: I found an old coffee grinder at a flea market. It is a mill that was manufactured by John M. THE 4-H MCKEAN ADVENTURE CLUB The 4-H McKean Adventure Club met on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at the McFall residence. They discussed plans for the new 4-H year, went over how they thought the fair went, and learned about scouting for animals. The group then decided to walk the woods and find a spot to put the scout camera. It likely was manufactured during the 1890s and is probably worth in the $95 to $150 range. Collectors should be aware that grinders are still being manufactured, and reproductions of the older models are plentiful. *** Q: I found an "I Like Ike" handkerchief at a flea market, and although I have no plans to sell it, I would like to know what a collector would pay for it. -Stacey, Bailey, Colo. NOW HERES A TIP By JoAnn Derson To make your own ammoniabased pretreatment for laundry stains, mix together equal parts water, liquid detergent and ammonia in a spray bottle. Never use with bleach. To shorten childrens shoelaces, tie to appropriate length, then cut off excess. Dip the ends in clear nail polish. Wait a few minutes for the polish to get tacky, then roll between your fingers. *** COLLECTING By Larry Cox Bambi Wall Pocket Q: I have a wall pocket of Bambi that dates from the mid-1950s. It is clearly marked Bambi, Walt Disney Productions and is in almost perfect condition with no chips or damage. The original price sticker of 80 cents is still attached to its bottom. Is this a yard-sale item or something to save for my son? -- Rachel, Bethalto, Ill. A: The scene of Bambi learning to walk on ice from the original 1942 Disney production might just be the most famous sequence the studio ever produced for a feature cartoon. Your wall pocket is worth about $75. If it has sentimental value, I would save it for your son. *** Q: I have a wine set that was made by the Asa G. Neville glass company, but I have not been able to find out anything about this company. Can you fill in some of the blanks for me? -- Helen, St. Charles, Mo. A: The company was founded by Asa G. Neville in 1891 and operated in Blairsville, Pa. It made globes for kerosene lamps in addition to battery jars, decanters, novelties and, yes, wine sets. Collectors are especially attracted to the various pressed glass patterns that the Neville glass works produced. *** Q: I was a big fan of David Cassidy of the Partridge Family during the 1970s, and I purchased several of his comic books, including issues from February 1972, May 1973 and September 1973. Are they worth anything? -- Debbie, Hammond, La. A: The first David Cassidy comic book was issued by Charlton in February 1972, and that premiere issue is worth about $25 in near-mint condition. The other two are worth in the $10 to $15 range, again depending on condition. *** Q: I found several pieces of art while sorting through my fathers estate. They include work by Enoch Kelly Haney and Scott Bennett. Calls to dealers in New Mexico have gone nowhere. -- Alan, Albuquerque, N.M. A: I would begin by hiring the services of a good art appraiser to determine current values. You should expect to pay for this service. Two established art appraisers in Santa Fe are Suzanne Staley, 888-758-1118, and Bernard Ewell, 505- 954-4113. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERES A TIP By JoAnn Derson To clean plastic, vented hairbrushes, just stick them in the dishwasher. You also can put toothbrushes in the dishwasher periodically. -- E.L. in Michigan If you or your child has a wood splinter, soak the finger/toe in icy water. WORLD RABIES DAY SEPTEMBER 28, 2011: NO MAYBES WHEN IT COMES TO RABIES. September 28, 2011 is World Rabies Day. There are around 7,000 cases of animal rabies, mostly in wildlife species, reported in the United States every year. These animals can expose humans or pets to rabies. From January 1, 2011 to date, Allegany County has had 8 animals test positive for rabies. This number is double what is usually seen in an entire year, and includes 4 raccoons, 2 foxes, and 2 bats. Each of these species are known to be animal vector species for rabies among the wild animal population. Among domestic animals, cats are more likely to be infected with rabies than dogs, probably because they are less likely to be vaccinated and may not be well supervised when outdoors. In addition, there are many more stray or feral cats than dogs are, which increases the risk among cats to become infected with rabies. Since pets are the most probable source of a rabies exposure to a human, the following information is provided for pet owners: Rabies prevention starts with the animal owner All dogs, cats, and ferrets should be vaccinated against rabies. Consider vaccinating livestock and horses. Animals that have frequent contact with humans should be vaccinated. You can reduce the possibility of your pets being exposed to rabies by not letting them roam free. Spaying and neutering your pets may decrease undesirable behavior like aggression and roaming. Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals-even if they appear friendly. Reduce the risk of exposure to rabies from wildlife Dont leave garbage or pet food outside, as it may attract wild or stray animals. Also, do not intentionally provide food for stray animals. This increases the likelihood of direct contact with these animals, often leading to an undesirable outcome in the form of a bite. Wild animals should not be kept as pets. Observe wild animals from a distance. Do not feed or handle them- even if they appear friendly. If you see a wild animal acting strangely, report them to the State Police (585-2689030) or to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (716-851-7010), who may be able to dispatch an ENCON Officer to capture or kill the animal. What to do when your pet bites someone Contact your local health department or local animal control. The Allegany County Department of Health will require monitoring of the pet for 10 days even if it is vaccinated. Report promptly any illness or unusual behavior of your pet to your veterinarian.

What to do when your pet is bitten by another animal Consult your veterinarian immediately who will examine your pet and assess your pets health and vaccination needs. Contact local animal control if your pet was bitten by a stray or wild animal. If you can identify or safely capture the animal that bit your pet, this will help determine if your pet was exposed to rabies. If your pet is currently vaccinated and possibly exposed to rabies, it should receive a booster vaccination and be watched closely for 45 days to assess its health. If at any time during that period the animal becomes ill or exhibits unusual behavior, you should have its health assessed immediately by a veterinarian. If a rabies-suspect or confirmed rabid animal bites your pet and your pet is not currently vaccinated, the only options are euthanasia (to prevent the development of rabies and possible exposure of the virus to humans and other animals) or a strict 6-month quarantine (to see if your pet will develop rabies from this potential exposure). What to do if you are bitten by an animal Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water. Contact your physician immediately. Report the bite to the local health department to evaluate the need for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. If you can identify or safely capture the animal, you may not need to have shots. Dogs, cats and ferrets can be observed for 10 days to see if they pose a risk of rabies exposure to you. Other animals may be tested for rabies although this requires euthanasia and testing of brain material. Prompt and appropriate preventative treatment after being bitten and before the disease develops effectively stops rabies and prevents the disease in humans. Remember there are no maybes when it comes to rabies. Protect your pet, your family, and yourself by vaccinating your dog, cat, and ferret against rabies. For more information about rabies and free rabies vaccinations for your pets contact the Allegany County Department of Health by calling 585-2689250. To find information on rabies on the web go to www.nyhealth.gov (the New York State Department of Health) or www.cdc.gov (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). fb
