Manistee National Guard unit heading back to war-ravaged country

Michigan communities are expected to join Bravo Troop. Officially, Bravo Troop will be deploying on Oct. 1, said Sgt. 1st Class Jim Downing. We dont have an specific time theyll be at their Mob Site (mobilization site), but I dont think thatll be too long. An armor unit during its 2005 deployment that was retrained to be a cavalry squadron for its 2008 assignment, the Manistee unit has maintained its 126th identity, as well as its namesake The Black Knights. For its 2008 deployment the Black Knights sent about 50 guardsmen to the Middle East war zone. That number is expected to be about the same for this time around. Members of Bravo Troop have been training the past several days at Camp Grayling. Some were expected to return to Manistee last Thursday, while the rest should be back by Sunday (Sept. 25) in preparation for next weeks send-off.

Silver spurs polished and black Stetson cowboy hats tilted at their eyebrows, Manistees cavalry troop is returning to Afghanistan. For the third time in six years, Bravo Troop 1-126th Cavalry Squadron is being called on to serve as convoy escorts, to do surveillance, provide route recognizance and more. About four dozen National Guardsmen are expected to leave the Manistee National Guard Armory next Friday morning before they will be ceremoniously honored later that same day at Caledonia High School Field House (4:30 p.m.). An informal gathering is expected to be held at noon on Thursday at the Manistee National Guard Armory. In their previous two deployments in 2005 and 2008, no member of Bravo Troop suffered any serious battle wounds. Guardsmen from other northern

a graveyard isnt all its cracked up to be. Desiring to perform all forms of comedy, he took sketch and improv classes at The Second City in Chicago, IO and Annoyance. In Chicago, he debuted his one-person sketch show Pursuing Happiness, a bunch of scenes about people that moved out of their parents houses, got a real job and got married performed by a guy who didnt. Palascaks humor is clean and geared for the whole family, said Matt Sanderson, WSCC professor of philosophy and faculty advisor of student senate. I absolutely cant wait to see him live. His stand-up routines on Letterman and Leno were amazing. Even when he wasnt speaking, just his facial expressions had the audience laughing till they nearly fell out of their seats. He is absolutely brilliant, said Rick Plummer, director of the Preforming Arts Series at WSCC. It is the type of humor that is universal. All ages, and all backgrounds can appreciate and enjoy his routine. I wouldnt miss it for anything. Tickets for comedian Palascak are available by calling the WSCC Box Office at (231) 843-5507.

some time: Manistee Blacker Airport can successfully support jet air service. I have gained a great deal of respect for the job Lind and the authority do on managing the local airport by watching them operate at their monthly meetings. The progress made at the airport over the past year has been nothing short of phenomenal. Doubt me? Take a look at the airport parking lot on any given day. It is isnt just filled it is filled to
overflowing with people flying out of local airport. That didnt just happen by accident. If it wasnt for the hard work of these dedicated people, Manistee would have never had the opportunity to get jet service in the first place. What is more important is the positive impact it has had on the community. Manistee is rapidly becoming a point of destination for air travelers and that is good news for all of us. The passenger numbers speak volumes. A total of 3,400 passengers in August compared to the 877 that flew a year ago says it all. Other months were just as impressive with four times the passengers than the previous year. Frontier readily admits that they were pleased with Manistees numbers. However, we became a victim of an overall
down scale by the airline. The bigger question is: where do we go from here? I like to look at it from the positive perspective of the glass being half full instead of half empty in this situation. Why is that? It is quite simple as once the Essential Air Service bidding process starts we are much more marketable than eight months ago when Frontier entered the picture. Lind will be the first to tell you we were like the little train that that could a year ago thinking I think I can support jet service, whereas now we Know we can support jet service and have the numbers to prove it. Furthermore, I have every bit of confidence in Lind and authority members Ervin Kowalski, Ross Spencer, Bob Wilson, Paul Schulert, Dale Picardat, Duane Anderson and
Glenn Lottie in finding a replacement. I have seen these people in action first hand when it comes to providing the very best air service for Manistee and they will get the job done. However, they are going to need the support and help of the community in this process. If the community is behind getting jet service it will go a long way when carriers are considering bidding the Manistee service. There is a point in the Essential Air Service process that allows for public input, which is when the community needs to step forward and be heard. It is is a spirit that I hope will start in motion even before I... See you next Wednesday. Associate Editor Ken Grabowskis columns appear every Wednesday in the News Advocate.
State fire marshal urges fire safety for college students: Campus housing poses preventable fire risks
Data shows that university students are at high risk to fire loss and injury, according to the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services. The bureau urges students living on- and off-campus to be aware of fire risks and know the preventative measures that could save their lives. Unfortunately, many college students dont see fire as an actual risk or threat, nor do they realize how quickly a fire can spread; and many dont know what to do when a fire does happen, said Ronald R. Farr, state fire marshal. Fire safety education is so important, but its probably the last thing on students minds, especially those living away from home for the first time. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, September and October are the worst months for fire-related emergencies and fatal campus-related fires. Some 23 percent of the estimated 3,800 university housing fires that occur each year in the U.S. occur during the first two months of classes. Figures show that 83 percent of university housing fires are cooking fires, and common factors in deadly campus fires include lack of fire sprinkler systems, missing or disabled smoke alarms, careless smoking, unattended candles, overloaded electrical circuits and extension cords, and the misuse of alcohol that impairs judgment and hampers evacuation efforts. The fire marshal stresses the importance of having operable smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Batteries should never be removed from the alarm, and the equipment should be tested monthly. The fire marshal also offers the following fire safety tips: Candles n Avoid using lighted

candles. Instead, use battery-operated, flameless candles which can look, smell and feel like real candles. n Never leave a candle unattended. Extinguish the candle before you leave the room or go to sleep. n A candle is an open flame; keep the candle away from papers, draperies and linens. n Always use a flashlight not a candle for emergency lighting. n Use sturdy, safe candleholders that protect the flame from contact with combustible materials. Cooking n Follow school rules on in-house cooking and never leave cooking unattended. n Keep your cooking area clean (stovetop, burners, oven) and uncluttered. n Plug microwave ovens or other cooking appliances directly into an outlet. Never use an extension cord for a cooking appliance as it can overload the circuit and cause a fire. n If a fire starts in a microwave, keep the door closed and unplug the unit. n Keep a working fire extinguisher nearby the cooking area and make sure you know how to use
Smoking n Dont allow smoking inside your dorm room or apartment and NEVER smoke in bed. If you smoke, smoke outside in a designated area. n Make sure cigarettes and ashes are out. Never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash can. n After a party, check for smoldering cigarette butts, especially under cushions. Chairs and sofas catch on fire fast and burn fast. Electrical and appliance safety n Check your schools rules before using electrical appliances in your dormitory room. n Dont use stoves and microwaves to help heat a cold dorm room or apartment. n Select appliances with automatic shut-off switches. n Dont overload outlets; dont use a series of adaptors to connect numerous machines or devices to an electrical outlet that may result in an overload, power outage, spark or fire. n Use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage on the lamp or fix-

Escape Planning n Identify all emergency exits on your floor; know and practice an escape plan that includes two ways out of every room. n Use the stairs; never use an elevator during a fire. n Smoke is toxic. If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your way out. n If youre trapped, call 9-1-1 and tell them where you are. Seal your doors with rages and signal from your window.
