Commonwealth Games 2010 Main article: Concerns and controversies over the 2010 Commonwealth Games

During the felicitation ceremony that had been arranged to honour the three Indian medalists at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Kalmadi reportedly walked out because he had not been offered a chair next to the Vice-President of India Hamid Ansari.[8] In January 2010, former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh accused Kalmadi of being part of a 'sports mafia'.[9] Kalmadi's conduct around the 2010 Commonwealth Games has come under scrutiny, with the Chief Vigilance Commission (India's anti-corruption organisation) asking the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe certain aspects of the games' organization. For this, the opposition demanded Kalmadi's resignation. However, Suresh Kalmadi continues to deny corruption charges. On April 25, 2011 after being questioned over alleged irregularities in the conduct of Queen's Baton Relay (QBR) held in London in 2009, CBI arrested Kalmadi under Sections 120 B and

420 (criminal conspiracy and cheating) of the Indian Penal Code in the Commonwealth Games Time Scoring Equipment scam.

CWG Scam ~~The King of all Scams~~ The Commonwealth Games is an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. As well as many Olympic sports, the Games also include some sports that are played mainly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens and netball.

The Commonwealth Games was severely criticized by several prominent Indian politicians and social activists because billions of dollars have been spent on the sporting event despite the fact that India has one of the world's largest concentration of poor people. Additionally, several other problems related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games have been highlighted by Indian investigative agencies and media outlets; these include serious corruption by officials of the Games' Organizing Committee, delays in the construction of main Games' venues, infrastructural compromise, possibility of a terrorist attack, and exceptionally poor ticket sales before the event. ~~ The Down Side :( ~~
Many blames were put on the organizing committee during these games. The most heightened blame was that billions of rupees were used up in these games by Suresh Kalmadi who was the head of Organizing Committee. Spending such a huge amount is useless because India has many other priorities that needs to be fulfilled before organizing a huge event. Since the work for the commonwealth games started it has been a center of controversies. This event was highly criticized when it seemed that the construction work will not be able to complete by the specified date. Labour laws have also been defied. Making children to work on various sites which violates child labor law and by paying the workers less than the minimum wage of Rs152 in Delhi city which is a violation of Minimum Wages Act. In its bid to get to the bottom of the massive money laundering involved in the Commonwealth Games scam, the Enforcement Directorate will soon file cases against unknown accused. Sources have told NDTV that the cases will be filed within the next two to three days under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The charges relate to two key cases that Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi and his associates have been facing the flak for. One is the AM Films contract case related to the alleged financial irregularities during the Queen Baton's Relay held in London. For example, the transport (Mercedes) hired for the Queen's Baton Relay, ED says, alone amounted to 1.5 lakh pounds for 12 hours duty. The second is the overlays case. The ED is

mainly looking at four consortiums in charge of overlays: PICO international and Deepali Designs, GL Litmus and Meroform consortium, Comfort Net and Nussli India consortium and ESG Arena and D-Art furniture. These firms got contracts worth at least Rs. 1,000 crore. Separate cases may be filed for the AM Films contract and the overlays got in India. The ED hasn't yet questioned Kalmadi on these cases, but sources say there are good chances of establishing his link. Different agencies, including the ED, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), have been asked to uncover a multitude of financial misdeeds during the CWG that range from payments being made to companies that don't exist, to contracts that allowed those hired for the Games to get away with severely overpriced equipment and services. The CVC is inquiring into over 30 complaints related to alleged corruption in the Games works carried out by different civic and construction agency. It includes overlays works, workforce selection, hiring of equipment and public relation related projects executed by the OC. The CBI has registered four FIRs naming some of the close aides of Kalmadi for alleged criminal conspiracy and financial irregularities in executing certain contracts. It has also questioned Kalmadi in connection with its cases. On October 25 last year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had also appointed a committee under the chairmanship of former Comptroller and Auditor General V K Shunglu to look into corruption in several works carried out for the mega sporting event. The Committee was asked to submit its report within three months time. (With PTI Inputs)

Who is kalmadi ?

New Delhi: Suresh Kalmadi has for long been synonymous with sports in India, as an administrator, not a sportsman. Known to be one of Pune's richest men, Kalmadi has been a controversy's child. Kalmadi has worn many more hats and was even a minister in the Narasimha Rao government in 1995-96. He presented the Railway Budget then as union minister of state for railways, the only junior minister to have done so, his website claims. Kalmadi, a Pune boy, joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in the early 1960s and then the Indian Air Force as a pilot. He served in the force for six years and then was an instructor at NDA for two more years till 1974. He served through two wars - the 1965 and the 1971 wars against Pakistan.

Suresh Kalmadi opted for premature retirement and his big break came when he was spotted by Sanjay Gandhi in Pune, where he ran a fast food outlet. He joined the Congress - the Pune boy had made it big. Kalmadi headed the Maharashtra youth Congress for a while and then became a Rajya Saba MP in 1982. He has been a member of Parliament - in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha ever since. He is the sitting Lok Sabha MP from Pune. In 1996, Kalmadi became the President of the Indian Olympic Association and established a virtual stranglehold being re-elected unopposed for two subsequent four-year terms. He gathered more positions as a sports administrator - President, Asian Athletics Association and Life President Athletics Federation of India and Chairman of the Commonwealth Games organising committee among them. His website says he has organised Pune marathons for the last 23 years. In recent times, bringing the Formula One Grand Prix to India was Kalmadi's pet project and one that shrouded him in some controversy. There have been other controversies amid accusations of high-handedness and arrogance as Kalmadi's fortunes continued to soar. As the Commonwealth Games scandal came to light, Kalmadi appeared vulnerable for the first time in many years. Skeleton after skeleton seemed to tumble out and investigations began into allegations of big financial irregularities. The Congress distanced itself and today, Pune's big man is being raided by the CBI.
