Youve Come a Long Way, Little Nurse

This presentation by two sisters, Mary Rogers and Stephanie Van Horn, details the World War II experiences of their mother, Sallie Durrett Farmer. Sallie was an Army nurse stationed on the Philippine Islands in December, 1941 when Japanese troops invaded the islands and soon took all Allied military troops captive. She spent almost three years as a POW in Santo Tomas Internment camp. This presentation gives details of her experience as she shared the story with her daughters. It is truly a unique blend of bravery and compassion.

All ladies are welcome!

2012 BUDGET Its the time of year when all ministries are asked to please turn in a budget request for 2012. Requests need to be turned in by Sunday, October 2nd to Julie Stuck or to the church office.

LaCOMEDIA DINNER THEATRE - This event is scheduled for Thursday, October 13. At this point, all seats have been reserved. However, circumstances are always subject to chance and I am encouraging anyone interested to add your names to our "stand-by list". The cost is just $43 per person which includes transportation, dinner and the show. The sign-up sheet remains posted. If you have questions contact me. WEDNESDAYS: Our 10:00 am and 6:30 pm groups continue a study of II Corinthians. This is a verse-by-verse examination of the chapters. Study questions are provided. We meet at 10:00 am and 6:30 pm. Why not join us for one of these informal study groups? SUNDAY EVENINGS IN THE SANCTUARY: We are continuing our series based in the Psalms. This week, at this 6:00 pm service the topic will be "Stress Versus Strength" (Psalm 46). I am planning to follow this series with some studies on the "Hard Sayings of Jesus". This would include any statements, made by Jesus that you may find difficult to understand. [An example may be found in Matthew 8:22.] I am asking for your help in planning for these studies. Suggestion sheets were distributed last Sunday evening and will be available this week. Several have turned some suggestions. If you have an idea, you may give me a call. FINAL THOUGHT: If you must talk about your troubles, don't bore your friends with them - tell them to your enemies who will be delighted to hear about them.

A Note From Brad.

What a wonderful blessing it was to have Rich Teske with us yesterday at Fifth. I ask that you continue to pray for the ROC ministry that impacts the campus of Ohio University daily for Christ. I hope that each of you pray daily for all our college students from FACC. We have many who study locally at OU and many others who are away from family and friends on their campuses. If you would like to contact some of those who are away, call our office and find out addresses for those students. I am sure they would love to hear from you or would like to receive a care package. We are off to a great start for our fall Life Groups. We have maxed out our Not a fan group, but still have room for you to join us for our Forgotten God group that meets at the church weekly on Tuesday night from 7-8:30 PM. Please note the time change. If you want to join us, call Brad at 74.550.9882 and I will get you a copy of the book we are studying. Hospital policy What I am about to write is for your information and is not a result of anyone complaining. Frequently we have church members who have scheduled surgeries at our local hospitals in Central Ohio. I am more than happy to visit you while under hospital care. However, I want to make you aware of my visitation policy. I will only visit you in the hospital if you personally let me know you are having surgery. I do not want to find out through the grapevine or another staff person that you are having something done. I will assume if you want me to visit you that you will let me know. Thanks for your understanding! As we draw closer to Go Forth Weekend, you will be given opportunity to help families from the community who need the love of God shown to them. Please mark October 29th on your calendar! We are planning to serve others on this day from 9-Noon. Right now we have 4 projects planned and possibly a fifth. Obviously, we need you to make this a success. Will you help? Look for more information this weekend in our bulletin and be sure to get signed up soon. In His Service, Brad, Ephesians 3:20-21

Blue Star Mothers

The Lancaster chapter of the Blue Star Mothers, along with the local Veterans group, is furnishing a home for 8 homeless veterans in Lancaster, and are asking for donations of any HOUSEHOLD items towels, sheets (twin size), blankets, pillows, linens, cups, dishes, flatware, pots and pans, small kitchen appliances, etc. Anything is appreciated, as long as it is in good condition. Larger items will be considered and they can be picked-up. Thanks for your help. A donation box is by the nursery door and is designated for your donations. (no food items at this time)

Worship
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. I Corinthians 12:4-7 As we have spent a few weeks looking at worship, hopefully it has become clear that worship is not about Sunday morning, it is about every moment of our lives, lived in response to Gods great love for us, poured out in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. This response is empowered by the Holy Spirit living within each of us. Like Paul, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice, the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Romans 12:1 Whatever our gifts, talents, and abilities, they were given that we might glorify God and encourage one another. If you are a part of our second service and have a gift of music, honor God by offering your gift in musical worship. The team that leads our time of worship in song is always eager to involve more people. If you sing, play an instrument or are interested in assisting with the sound or video presentations, please let us know. Where are your gifts being used? Where are they needed, but missed. Wherever your gifts lie, dont let them go to waste. Bless the Lord in all you do and strengthen fellow Christians as you use the gifts and abilities placed within you. This is truly the way to worship him. Lord, let us not squander the gifts you have given but help us to bring you glory in the power of your Spirit. amen

Christmas Project
The Philothean Sunday School class is sponsoring a Christmas project to collect items for the Blue Star Mothers to include in Care Packages that they will be boxing and sending to deployed soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. There is a list of items needed posted on the bulletin boards and in the Sunday School classrooms. There will also be a collection box in the parlor. Deadline for your donations is Sunday, November 6, 2011. Thanks for your participation in this effort to support our troops.

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Do You Own a Kroger Plus Card?

By Glen Shady It was absolutely wonderful to have Reach Out on Campus (ROC) here this past Sunday. If you missed them, they are a campus ministry down at Ohio University. Their goal is to complete the Great Commission within the setting of that university. They do not only have a focus on the undergraduate and graduate students, but they also are working at reaching the faculty. The Missions Committee has decided that from now until the end of the year we are going to try to give a special focus to ROC. One thing that we are going to do is put together a finals package for ROC students. This package will be filled with candy, snacks, and material from ROC. Not only will this be an encouragement to the students, but it will hopefully be a conversation starter if they have unbelieving roommates. We also are looking forward to organizing a card shower for the ROC staff. This will hopefully be an effort that we can get other churches involved with as well. These things are coming in the near future, but there is something you can do right now. If you have a Kroger Plus card, you can register it on Krogers website. After registering it if you log into your account there is an option to edit your community rewards. If you register your card toward a community rewards member, a portion of every purchase you make will be contributed to them. Reach Out on Campus is such a member. So if you search for their name, they will come up as an option. So by shopping at Kroger you can give to this ministry on a consistent basis. So I encourage you to seek out this opportunity immediately to help this worthy mission.

Wednesday Nights for Teens

by Glen Shady On Wednesday Nights we are going to study the book of Judges. This book still carries with it so much insight into our lives today, and I am excited to see what we will gain from going through it. On top of this, our Wednesday nights are going to be times for special games and focuses (like memory work). It is going to be a blast. If you are a teen, be upstairs at the church this next Wednesday at 6:30. If you are not a teen, but you know a teen, please invite them to this midweek study so that they can be plugged into the youth group.
