AIR TOUR
1- Introduction

The CEDAC Eco-Agro Tourism (CEAT) is a part programme of CEDAC to give service of tourism
for eco-agriculture. The foreign tourists can enjoy, of course, with the splendid and panoramic
landscapes of rural area of Cambodia. They can meet, discus with people and pupil and enjoy a
happy time with our folk dances, good taste of traditional cuisine, sharing the point of view of
sustainable development of rural community.

CEDAC has just welcomed his first group of tourists called AMIS de NORMANDIE from French
from November 11-21, 2005. This group was led by Mr. Michel Cottebrune, the former national
president of farmer association of France. There are 34 tourists with 15 couples. Most of them are
retired. Mr. Loek Sothea and Mr. Heang Suo Saravorn are amateurs within this hike, while Mr.
Prak Sereyvath and Mr. Pel Sokha are alternatively complemented this voyage (please refer to
Annex for list of group, programme).

Objectives of this tour are:

- to take a rest in and to take splendid landscapes of Cambodia

- to visit rural communities where local innovation/experimentation activities have been

conducted

- to interact with and learn from farmer innovators/experimenters about their efforts to
innovate and experiment

- to exchange experiences on community development and sustainable development of rural

community

- to support Cambodian farmers and farmer groups in strengthening credit system,

organization development and gardening system

2- Activity of journey

The journey was conducted from November 11-22, 2005 in the countryside to the east side of
Mekong River, the north side of Tonle Sap, and to the South and South-west of Cambodia.

First day (November 11, 2005)

On November 11, 2005, the group was warmly welcomed at airport following by a buffet
conference at Cambodiana Hotel. Prof. Tan Bun Suy and Prof. Henri Laucard have also participated
in this meeting, presenting the socio-economical situation and also the geo-history of Cambodia. Dr.
Yang Sang Koma, the president of CEDAC, was there too, launching a short valuable speech for
the first welcome of our AMIS de NORMANDIE group.

Second day (November 12, 2005)

The whole group started his first visit to rural area in Prey Veng by the national road number 1 after
staying a night in Phnom Penh. It was on November 12, 2005 where our tourists were warmly
welcomed by pupils and primary teachers, under coordination of CEDAC staff at Ba Phnom. The
soft smiling of children there were touched the heart of our tourists.
2

Then, the afternoon, the group has visited a family exploitation at Chhoeur Kach commune where
they met the farmer innovators and women group. They took long time to discuss and to share their
experiences for further development in the community.

After this visit, our guesses were welcomed again by the pupils’ ban of dancing before sunset. They
appreciated so much the way we treated. They found the wealth of nature and abundant Cambodian
culture. The group came late to the hotel in Prey Veng where they had a deep sleep.

Third day (November 13, 2005)

The day after, on November 13, 2005, our AMIS de NORMANDIE started their second day
journey at the east part of Mekong Basin. They took the road number 11 from Prey Veng to
Kampong Cham. On the way, they stopped a lot of times to take photo of waterlily and lotus that
bloom with color of their natural red. It seems that they flowered to welcome our guests. Not so
long on the road, they reached a zone where there are a lot of trees planting linearly with a definite
distance from each others. This is where we call “Rubber Tree” or “Plantation of Heveaculture”.
The tourists stopped again to take this losing sight splendid landscape.

Then, they moved to the Kampong Cham City. There, they took a prompt visit of Norkor Ba Chey
Temple. Our guides explained the sculptures and history of this XIII century’s temple. The day did
not end yet. They were invited to visit a plantation of Heveaculture and factory of latex treatment.
H.E. Mam Siphan, director of this plantation has welcomed them with his lovely heart. The whole
group was sitting in the conference room to see a 25-minute film about the activities and result of
this plantation. After that they were invited to take a visit to the factory of latex treatment where is
located not far from the conference hall. They crossed the garden full of different species of exotic
flowers that bloom freshly to beside our tourists. H.E. Siphan explained the chain of production
from A to Z and then let them see the rubber nursery. He also invited them to dinner together that
we called the Franco-Khmer solidarity dinner. The presence of Director of provincial department of
Tourism of Kampong Chan in the dinner has deeply given them the strong confidence. With his
smiling face, his several love songs and his French language tone from the 50s decade made the
whole group be happily unforgettable and made the whole group sing and dance. The day ended
with an unforgettable souvenir.

Fourth day (November 14, 2005)

On November 14, 2005, the trip was orientated to Siem Reap, the
famous old capital of Khmer, crossing Kampong Thom. On the
middle of the way, next to Kampong Thom administrative
center, they were interested by an exploitation of local
community in multi-farming system and credit system. They
arrived at farmer house, representative of farmer association in
the village, where there were several members waiting for.
Coconut and soft drink from natural herbs and fruit were served
to our guests accompanied by traditional music. Mr. Sophorn,
the owner of the exploitation and representative of farmer
association presented to the group about his association. Shortly,
the group has visited his farming system which composed of
several components such as fish pond, rice field, tree nursery and
irrigation system etc. They appreciated so much this innovation
and strongly believed that this community will get out of poverty
soon.
Waterlily and his charm
3

Our AMIS de NORMANDIE has contributed to the development of this association on a small
amount of 50 USD. Then, they continued their journey to Siem Reap. On the way they could smell
of flowering rice and see the landscapes of losing sight of rice field.

The group reached Siem Reap about 20:00 PM. This city has welcomed us first by a traffic jam.
However, there was no problem for them and it could not forbid them to explore the famous city of
wonder patrimony. After deposing their luggage in one of the big hotel, Angkor Lotus Hotel, they
went to have dinner in a restaurant with Khmer style decoration. The group was welcomed by some
professional dancers. They played several folk dances and also royalist ones. This was where our
AMIS de NORMANDIE could, of course, know about our abundant culture. The group was
returning back soon after shortly ending dancing scene, because of the tiredness of long traveling.

Fifth day (November 15, 2005)

The morning came. About 8:00 AM in the fresh morning with the touching fog, without patience,
the group went to see our wonder temples. Two professional guides took us to see Angkor Thom
where we found the faces of old man staring strait to us. The temples, which seem to be ruined
enough, are waiting for us and for all visitors to take their last image before falling down to the
ground. Apsara always smile with their softly voice of Chum Reap Sour, waiting for us without
tiredness. They are telling us about the period of Khmer powerfulness and peace. The glance of
Brahman tells us that we have to join power together to build this country and to chase enemy from
our land.

Quitting this temple with regret, we encountered the big field of Elephant. The crow and the voices
of our ancestors seem to emerge again and forever while our guide described us about that glorious
period. They seem to be still alive and to tell us that they are near us, to support us in order to bring
back our dignity and our prosperous time.

Then the bus took us to see another temple. A long the way, we saw a lot of temples that stand
charmingly under the unblinking glance of our tourists. We seem to be in the jungle. The emotion
of fear of wildlife accompanying with the song of cicada reminded us the time of glory. The bus
stopped in front of the east gate of Ta Prohm temple. We could listen to the flute and TRO (Khmer
stringed instrument similar to the violin, it is two strings and is played with a blow), played by a
group of orphaned children. We can see the temple that is about 1000 meters from this secondary
gate. Walking along, we could hear the sound of Khmer traditional music played by a group of
handicap from landmines. The tourists were also attracted by kinds of big trees of Dipterocapacae
and other. Nostalgically, we saw the ruin temple with the splendid sculpture and the untidy piles of
stones. Some ways into the temple were indicated “No entry!” or “Danger!” which tells us that this
old temple couldn’t cordially welcome us like before. The big trees that grow on the some part of
this temple with their strong and big roots shifting into the cracking stones show their dignity and
their power, vaunting that they can someday be on the top and control this poor temple. They are
now attracted by our tourists. But how about tomorrow while these trees become old and fall down
to the ground? Will they destroy absolutely our temple? Going inside to see the central towers, we
could see the destroyed traces of sculptures. These tell us again that we had a battle and we lose it.
But remember “We lose a battle, but not a war”, said Charles De Gaul, ancient President of French
Republic. Lonely, tear drops fallen, imagine to the glorious period, to the favorable achievements
and to the civil war. Passing the central towers, we can reach the pavilion and entry of the west.
There, there is some Naga and lions. They are waiting for us, seeming to tell us that “I could do all
my best to protect this temple and may all of you be as one to derive your revenge and hurtfulness
into the energy and power to recover our dignity”. Poorly, we could see the lion stands alone. It is
unusual especially the one who is near north pond. In fact, he had a couple too, but his partner fallen
down into water. No one takes care of him. No one brings him back from the muddy pond. So pity
my poor lion!!!
4

Time was out. We came back and the bus took us to the restaurant decorating in Khmer style with
Khmer cuisine. The visit of 2nd wonder of the world was set up after a short lunch. We were harried
to see this wonder so much. Our guides described like poem about this temple. We could see the
great canal around the campus. Walking on the bridge that marks “Under Restoration” with the
touch of cold air and with bloomy waterlily gave us an emotion of happiness and hope. So dense
and proud, the tourists were welcomed by Apsara and vice visa, the lasts were praised with all their
heart. The sculptures of the million apsara are in good condition except a few of them seem to be
destroyed by nature and erosion. Looking to the East, the big and high temple is happily smiling to
us. He gives us a bunch of lotus that is blooming in the twin ponds alongside. Visiting seriously, it
cannot forbid the tourist thinking and dreaming about Angkor period. Reaching the central tower in
form of lotus, we feel afraid and adventure of climbing the vertical bending stair. On the top, we
could see the panoramic landscapes and trees and also other temple in the Angkor Temple Group.
Here we found the best sculptures and unique utopian architect of the world.

We continued our journey to the west of city where to be set a blue light-water lake, called
Occidental Baray. A small and green island emerges in the middle of this lake covering by an old
temple of Mebon style narrates us a history of Vishnu while he was asleep in millions years. A
statue of sleeping Vishnu was found there too to be witness.

Stop imagining about our pass and turn back to the actual activity near by the lake. There are a lot
of crowd were swimming. They like coming here in group or in family for relaxing and breathing a
fresh air. “Please buy me some souvenirs, Mesdames and messieurs”, a softly voice from a souvenir
shop where a beautiful girl is standing in, smiling gracefully to us. The Khmer style statues related
to our religion, heroes and wildlife animals in wood and or in stone and other hand crafting products
are sold there with reasonable price.

The night came. We returned back to Hotel to take a rest after a full-day quick visit.

Sixth day (November 16, 2005)

Happy Birthday to Jacqueline Picard!!!!

Our journey has changed direction. The bus took us since the dawn to Phnom Krom where our
tourists could see the sun rise on Tonle Sap.

It was 07:30 AM on November 16, 2005; the speed boat brought us to Phnom Penh by fluvial way.
At that time, we seemed to being traveling across the fresh-water ocean. The flood forest, the flood
villages, the folk fishers, the births and everlasting blue-water gave us an eternal emotion of
nostalgia. Along the way, we could see the various cropping system and activities of villagers. We
did feel neither tired nor hot despite of the long journey and the sun.

We arrived safely Phnom Penh around 12:30 PM. The bus picked us up to the restaurant at other
side of Mekong where Mr. Sereyvath has as well prepared for us some traditional delicious food.
Shortly after a lunch time, we returned back to the Star Royal Hotel in order to avoid traffic jam
because it was the second day of water festival. It was personal time of tourists. So we let them do
some shopping or go for a walk upon their leisure and we want them to participate in the greatest
festival of Water Festival.

Seventh Day (November 17, 2005)

We started our journey to the south of Phnom Penh to see some artisan and handcrafting production
of tissue from silk. Next to Phnom Chiso, we reached a small village full of these activities. The
villagers welcomed to our tourists and explained the chain of production. At the end of this visit,
our tourists bought some souvenirs from this artisan activity.

We returned back to Phnom Chiso for having lunch. We had only chicken for our food. We felt in
doubt of birth flue. However, we proposed to the cookers to prepare for us only well-roast chickens.
It was remarkable that our AMIS de NORMANDIE ate a little.

Next after lunch, some of our AMIS wanted to explore the pre-Angkor temple period. We climbed
up to the top. Amazingly, there were a few of them who are now from 60 to 80 years old, still want
to see this temple without taking care themselves. The local guide narrated about this temple
accompanied by some gamins.

Eighth Day (November 18, 2005)

It was 8:30 AM. We took the national road number 3 the direction Phnom Penh-Kampot. On the
way, we stopped sometimes when we saw the splendid landscapes of waterlily, lotus and also
6

activities of farmers in the field. We also went round a farmer organization in Tramkak District to
meet the farmer innovators and farmer experimenters over there. The whole group understood more
and clearly about agriculture in Cambodia and the concept of the further development in rural areas.
The member of local organization explained us about their work and their achievement in order to
improve the livelihood of their families and also of the whole community. Some financial
contribution for the development from our AMIS was given to this farmer association.

Then, the group took long road to Kep Town without crossing Kampot. The bus stopped many time
due to the technical problems. However, we arrived there safely before sun set. We stayed in Vanna
Guest House and also in N4 Hotel. Within sight of the coast, we can see the view of mountains, the
blue sea and big islands. We found that Kep Town was under reconstruction.

Ninth Day (November 19, 2005)

Not so early, the group quitted the guest house after a heavy breakfast. Our direction was Sihanouk
Ville. We crossed Kampot, chain of Cardamom Mountain, Bokor Mountain and also the sea coast.
The various activities of the people along the road attracted us very much. More than 4 hours in car,
we seemed a little bid tired.

Finally, we reached the popular coastal town. Mr. Sereyvath joined us at the Golden Sea Hotel.
Without taking a rest, the tourists went to Sokha Beach where we have prepared picnic with soft
and cool drinks. We took an afternoon-rest there, swimming, relaxing and also driving water-
motorbike. Every one was happy. It was hyper good in organizing. The tourists never thought about
this.

In the early evening, we conducted a reflection and resumed on our tour. Our AMIS shared
responsibilities and asked some questions for clarifying. Mr. Sereyvath was there to answer those
questions almost related to agriculture and also geo-economy of Cambodia. The meeting was
finished by reciting a French poem. It was written by Mr. LOEK Sothea (NAPOLÉON LOEK) for
his participation in the written competition in 2001. It narrates about Cambodia of yesterday and
today (the whole poem, please refer to annex 2). Then, the group had dinner in a French restaurant
which locates not so far from Hotel. There, we felt very happy as every body enjoyed, reciting jokes
and poems etc. We finished happily this dinner around 10:00 O’clock and returned back to hotel.

Tenth Day (November 20, 2005)

We woke up very late. We felt in good mood. We went shopping in the town where we could not
find a lot of things. At 11:00 O’clock, we returned back to Phnom Penh. By the way, we went to
Ream Conservation Park to have lunch. There, we have let our AMIS go for a walk or take a rest
before the cooking was already ready. Some of them adventured by crossing the sea to explore the
islands near the beach. Some were staying in place and the other went for a walk around. The group
met each other around 1:00 PM and we had a heavy lunch with sea food dishes. After that, we
moved to Phnom Penh. The tourists explored again the landscapes of green mountains, semi-
industrial agriculture and also the activities in the field of small farmers.

We ended our journey of the day after a farewell party in Tata Restaurant along the National Road
Number 6A. There, Dr. Koma and his colleagues were waiting for us, serving a lot of delicious
food. We enjoyed, we danced, and we sang the songs... At the end of this evening, Dr. Koma gave a
gift for souvenir to all of our AMIS. And vice visa, the last thanked for his warm welcome and
thanked for CEDAC who are ready to organize this fair tour.
7

Eleventh Day (November 21, 2005)

Happy Birthday to Madeleine Leloup!!!

It was an unhappy day. We felt sorrow. Nothing to talk, we knew that we would be apart in the next
hours. However, we tried to smile to console each other; it was true and it is still true.

Our AMIS was divided into two groups. The first group went to meet French Ambassador which
composed of 6 people with accompanist (Mr. Sereyvath). The result of this meeting is confidential,
but we did know as the first step that our AMIS appreciated our activities and our facilitation so
much. They endorsed us and took a pressure to the French Ambassador to make a good alliance and
to support to CEDAC at any time.

The second group went shopping at Russian Market. There they found a lot of things and they
bought for souvenirs for their families. We were happy to negotiate the price.

At the end of the morning, these two groups joined again for having lunch and for preparing
luggage. We organized a quick visit to the Royal Palace as the request of our tourists.

It was 4:00 O’clock; every body prepared readily their luggage. The bus waited us in front of the
hotel. Helas, it was too hard to accept this emotion. We had nothing more to complain, just smiling
with an emotion of “smoke gets into one’s eyes”. It was nearly 6 O’clock at the airport. We knew
that it was the last moment. Tears dropped, saying goodbye with crying-smiling. We could not say
anything besides saying “Goodbye and Good luck, Bon voyage” and we could hear otherwise
“Thank for your accompanying, thanks CEDAC for this good facilitation”.

3- Problems and solution:

In the journey we encountered some problems such as mechanical technique of cars and complex
activities to be done while most of our AMIS is old. We also lack of experiences of guiding and
preparing logistic, hotel and food. The permanent problem we struggled is the lack of knowledge of
history and our language is not specialized in culture, tradition and or in temple. We got also
another problem. It has occurred when we traveled from Kep Town to Sihanouk Ville. One of our
guests sprained her ankle while she came out of car.

Communication is the best way to resolve these problems, but not all. We try to connect to anyone
else who is aware of these things e.g. Mr. Vuthy helps us to arrange logistic of Hotel and restaurant.
We have also the grand support from our CEDAC staff to arrange and manage and collaborate in
this tour.

When we visited the temple (in Angkor, Phnom Chiso and also Royal Palace), we seek a support
from the professional guides who are available there. Besides these, we try to explain in the simple
language, reading the book.

For the problem of car, we try to change it to be suitable to our guests. But we still have problem.
We will learn about these experiences for the future.

4- Conclusion

The tour was organized smoothly. They appreciated the way we treated and the way we facilitated.
They called this was “Fair Tour” in which CEDAC, farmers and tourists can exchange experiences
each other. In additional to the journey, they also profited their time to meet H.E French
Ambassador to show our activities in rural development. We have built a strong confidence from
the grass root among farmers. We have proven our hospitality of them by resolving even small
8

problem such as bringing back the vest and notebook that our guests forgot in hotel, facilitating a
meeting between the groups with H.E. French Ambassador, etc.

However, we were unhappy about arranging cars that encountered again and again mechanical
problems despite of changing a new one. The journey was also short, especially while staying at
Siem Reap.

Finally, we get fruitfully result. We are proud of what we have done and we must derive this
success into the energy to organize subsequent tours. We thank anyway for CEDAC staff to devote
their import time for a smooth coordination.

Cambodge, Hier et Aujourd’hui

For National Compeition of Writing

Hier, on a eu le bonheur,
Hier, on a eu le pouvoir,
On a contrit le palais
Angkor du Cambodge.

Hier, on s’est disputé,

On a dérobé la paix,
Du pays calme de l’Asie,
Du coeur du Cambodge.

On a eu la déchirure,
Laissant la terre sans la vie,
Sans justice, sans liberté,
Pitié du Cambodge !

Hier, on a tous pleuré

On a rien eu à manger,
La sécheresse et la pluie,
Menaçant le Cambodge.

Mais, aujourd’hui, on s’amuse,

Le beau temps après la pluie,
On s’échappe du malheur,
Bon sang le Cambodge !

On peut faire ce que l’on veut

En respectant bien aux mieux,
Nation, Religion et Roi,
La devise du Cambodge.

Entendre chanter les oiseaux

Chantant avec de l’espoir
Que ce pays se développe
Chanter pour le Cambodge !
