Hope IRP Project *You will be reading and presenting at least one IRP book each quarter in this class. Please bring your IRP book to class EVERYDAY! *Time slots for presentations will be open every Friday. You can sign up on the front board on the sheet indicated for your class. Please try to sign up for a time slot at least one week in advance. *You are creating a book jacket for your book (template attached). It will include the following: 1. Create an alternative book cover for your IRP book. The book cover should be creative and meaningful. If you are not a good artist, create a collage. Even though Im not grading you on your artistic abilities, I am grading you on your effort, therefore the more creative and well done the book cover, the better your grade will be. Think about how artists who are commissioned to design and create book covers go about choosing the images or the scene that goes on the cover. Think about symbols, themes, motifs, allusions and pivotal moments from the story. 2. A book jacket always includes a bio of the author and a brief summary of the story meant to grab potential readers attention. You will need to create and include these as well. Each should be about a paragraph long. 3. Many times, book jackets also include critical acclaim from literary critics. That being said, you will also write a review/critique of the book (what were the strengths, weaknesses, who would this book be recommended for, what are the overall themes, etc?). This should be at least two paragraphs long. 4. Calculate the reading level of the book using the attached Flesch-Kincaid formula. 5. Prepare to present your book to the class. *Your presentation will include the following: Choose an excerpt (about 1 minute long) to read to the class and explain why you chose this excerpt Explain book cover Briefly summarize the author bio Briefly summarize your critique What is the calculated reading level of your book?

Heres a checklist to help you stay organized: On the book jacket

Flesch-Kincaid Reading Level Formula

The following is the algorithm to determine the Flesch-Kincaid reading level.

Calculate the average number of words you use per sentence. Calculate the average number of syllables per word. Multiply the average number of words by 0.39 and add it to the average number of syllables per word multiplied by 11.8. Subtract 15.50 from the result. Algorithm: (0.39 * average_words_sentence) + (11.8 * average_syllables_word) - 15.9

The result is the Flesch-Kincaid grade level. Like the Gunning-Fog index, it is a rough measure of how many years of schooling it would take someone to understand the content. Negative results are reported as zero, and numbers over twelve are reported as twelve.
