An introduction to NGNs
An NGN (Next Generation Network) is a universal multi-service network designed for the transmission of voice, images and data on a packetswitching basis. An NGN provides the quality of service necessary for different types of telecommunication traffic. Characteristically, the transmission and the routing of the packets and the elements of the transmission equipment (links, routers, switches, gateways) are physically and logically separated from the devices and the intelligence controlling the execution of calls and services. The network intelligence supports all types of services in the packet network, from basic voice telephony to data, image, multi-media, broadband and management applications. These features represent the basis for drawing a distinction between an NGN and an ordinary telephone and IP network, which otherwise prevail in telecommunications. An NGN, the result of merging the internet with the telephone network, combines the best features of both. It provides: Adaptability for transmitting any type of traffic, which can be compared to the internet's adaptability as opposed to the inefficiency of a PSTN in transmitting data (this fact is especially important with regard to the estimation that data will soon represent 90% of telecommunication traffic). Guaranteed quality of voice telephony services and critical data applications; in this case an NGN offers PSTN reliability as opposed to the best effort of the internet's capacity. Low transmission costs per content unit - the price is closer to the internet than to a PSTN, the total amount of data and voice traffic trebles every year. NGN Architecture Transmission, linking, routing and services in legacy networks are integrated vertically: different networks are designed for different services (telephony, video, data). In contrast to legacy networks, next generation networks (NGNs) are characterized by an open architecture and the horizontal connection of different layers: The common NGN infrastructure is implemented with the transport layer, which is based on packet technology and used by different services. Information transfer between the source and the destination is transferred in an identical way, irrespective of whether it is a telephone call, an internet session, a video connection, a game with several players, or a movie. The application service layer is logically and physically separated from the transport layer, which enables the independent development of particular network segments. Different servers, which are separated from the transport, control different services - these include voice telephony, e-commerce, video-on-demand, etc. Adding a new service requires only a new server, which, via the transport layer, is accessible to all users connected to the network. Users connect to an NGN over interfaces that have different bandwidths and are implemented with different technologies. Despite broadband interfaces (>0.5 Mb/s) being the most suitable for connecting with an NGN, users have universal access to services irrespective of the type of equipment used.

The SI 2000 NG Story

Iskratel, in accordance with its vision and mission, offers solutions that give answers to many new questions and challenges regarding NGNs. The only permanent feature on our path is the fact that things change all the time. This also applies to networks and services and the field of telecommunications itself. We are aware that the great majority of solutions depend on particular and quite specific requirements encountered by our users. Our great help with providing complete solutions is an open, standardized and modular platform. Not only can we provide new products quickly and efficiently, but we can also provide high-quality solutions in addition to the existing, well-established services, and implement functions and services that are not part of the basic version. When designing and implementing SI2000 NG we paid special attention to the evolutionary side of the NGN story, which means that additional care has been given to transparent integration with the legacy PSTN equipment and legacy OSS (Operations Support Systems). Main Characteristics Open, standard and universal architecture Modular and scalable platform Complete set of (key) basic and intercomplementary network building blocks Complete and uniform management characteristic of the SI2000 family End-to-end network solutions and customer support Fully-featured system with proven reliability, quality and services Comparable Advantages Supervised and transparent transition from the legacy network to the NGN Early introduction of new services and a competitive edge Optional implementation of individual part or integral solutions Demo/evaluation product MSN Compatibility with installed SI2000 base Flexibility, programmability, "future safety" Compact housing and low port price

Legacy network (PSTN) offers: Many well-established services Saturation with services (with time) Legacy infrastructure Proven and reliable interfaces NGN present status: Not yet established services A multitude of new services New equipment and new investments The problem of equipment interoperability The problem of integration with PSTN equipment At this point with SI2000 NG you can already offer new services that are characteristic of NGN, while keeping all the established PSTN services. This also applies to the call server itself. This means that the carrier alone decides on the time when it will start offering new services. The decision depends on the level of interest shown by the users and, above all, on quality, safety and the profitability level of the services. To put it simply, the decision on the switchover to the pure softswitch (call server) is left to the carrier with Iskratel SI2000 NG providing for a controlled and safe transition.

Components
The basic components from the rich range of products and services designed by Iskratel are appropriately divided on the basis of the well-known and accepted NG network structure. We are especially proud of the new architecture that is based on an open, standardized platform ensuring minor investment costs and also minor operating expenses. Particular products from the NGN range are carefully chosen and modularly designed to provide, like a jigsaw puzzle, an easy, fast and efficient configuring and building of networks, all with the purpose of fulfilling user demands at a high-quality level. Our work is based on over 50 years of our own development and experience in the field of telecommunications. The high quality of our work is being constantly proven by the successes achieved by our customers. A very important fact is that individual components represent a part of a whole, and can be applied individually or in combination with other components. Depending on a specific need, requirement or problem, individual components are chosen, properly configured and interconnected by a common SI2000 management system. Applications/Services Control Access CPE

Management

CPE - Customer Premises Equipment TA102 and TA104 TA102/104 is a dual/four-channel Voice-over-IP terminal adapter that provides a connection for two/four conventional analog phones to an H.323 v2-compliant VoIP network. It is designed to provide service (all the well-known PSTN supplementary services, including analog Caller-Id) that is virtually indistinguishable from that of conventional telephone and facsimile services. In addition to the primary Ethernet connection to a local network an additional Ethernet port provides a connection to a personal computer without any external network equipment. Flexible TOS bit assignment and layer 2 (IEEE 802.1 p/Q) CoS settings allow the service provider to maintain the Quality of Service across the whole IP network, while satisfying user requirements for uninterrupted PSTN voice quality. All the maintenance jobs are executed from a remote location by the service provider, who is able to set each terminal adapter individually or in groups. In the same way, software releases can also be uploaded remotely by the SP.
TA1024/TA1048 The TA1024/TA1048 Customer Premises Gateway provides exactly the same functionality as its smaller brothers TA102 and TA104, the only difference is in capacity. It can be used for connecting up to 24/48 analog phones or G3 faxes to the VoIP network. By simply connecting the device on one side to a local network with Ethernet and adding as many analog subscribers as needed on the other side you can prepare the device for operation. TA1024 and TA1048 represent an ideal and cost-optimized platform for migration from obsolete analog switches to an NGN, and protecting business or residential customers' investments in terminals and wiring infrastructure. IP Telephone CT310i CT310i is a voice-over-IP phone. It is designed to work in close connection with the SI2000 family VoIP Gateways, providing the user with the same supplementary services set as an ISDN. Furthermore, it is fully version conformant with 2 H.323, thus making it suitable for placing voice calls over a standard packet-switching network Dynamical (DHCP) assignment of IP addresses, an additional Ethernet port, flexible TOS bit assignment and layer 2 (IEEE 802.1 p/Q and VLAN Id) CoS mechanisms are the "must-have" features of a modern IP Phone. CT310i has a very rich, comfortable (ISDN-like), set of built-in features allowing the user real freedom and ease of use with the choice of a variety of phone directories (including LDAP-based central directories), call lists, speed buttons and user-defined melodies for all stored numbers. The most important feature is strong support of secretary supplementary services e.g. boss/secretary, team groups, fast call pick-ups, transfers, etc.

06

Access The Media Gateway - MGW The Media Gateway is used as an universal bridging component between the legacy TDM (circuit-switched) network and the packet-switching network. It is a key element for the transition or access to an NGN, and at this moment it represents the central evolutionary SI2000 NG component for building solutions in NGN. It connects subscribers from the PSTN over E1 links and connects them via single or dual (redundant) IP/Ethernet link to the packet network. Media Gateways have universal port functionality, thus any port can be used either for voice (VoIP) or data (modem) traffic. Starting with the lowest 120 and 240 channels respectively, it can be upgraded to a few thousand channels. Media Gateway is either available in a smaller, cost effective and compact 1U chassis for enterprise and low-end CLEC configurations, or it can be offered in a more capable and robust Carrier Grade chassis to provide high availability and service availability configurations for demanding and high-end ILEC and other large operators. Basically there are two different Iskratel Media Gateways available. A standalone version with an integrated basic call control functionality and the "ordinary" version with an integrated signaling gateway functionality to convert SS7 and DSS1 into SCTP/M3UA and SCTP/IUA. The Access Gateway - AGW The Access GW is an IP enabled access node of the new SI2000 NG generation designed for applications in public and private next generation networks. The Access Gateway provides access to packet network for POTS and ISDN (BRI, PRI) subscribers. It is based on the wellknown SI2000 V5 MLC platform to guarantee a transparent migration of the existing MLC based products to new IP enabled NGN solutions and V6. The Access Gateway acts in the network as a voice gateway from 120 up to 640 channel capacity, available in different housings. It can be used independently as an H.323 gateway or in connection with a media gateway controller (with MGCP and IUA/SCTP protocols). It can be controlled by an SI2000NG call server or any other controller in the IP network that controls network devices by means of these protocols. The existing access-module version offers the option of easy broadband access (ADSL, SDSL) integration to Access Gateway. Users can choose between two modes of connection to the network, ATM and IP depending on the implementation. The AGW is designed for all markets. Market-specific data are modified by appropriate administrative procedures available to the carrier on the common SI2000 management node. The VoIP Gateway - VGW The Voice-over-IP Gateway is an access node of the new SI2000 NG generation, designed for use in public and private next generation networks. Its primary role is to connect VoIP equipment that resides on the LAN (e.g. VoIP phones, VoIP terminal adapters, PC Phones, etc.) to existing PSTN environment. It is based on the well-known legacy SI2000 access node, with an extra attached module for connection to a local data network (LAN). Already today the VGW enables users to connect their existing NGN voice terminals to PSTN as an early example of transition from TDM to NGN. The VoIP Gateway is available in the standard SI2000 compact 1U chassis that can be mounted in all standard racks. Its unique advantage is easy integration into the legacy access equipment, especially because of its standard V5.2 signalling. The current version features up to 30 voice channels. Like the entire SI2000 family, the VoIP Gateway is managed by means of the standard and common SI2000 management node.

Components
Control The Call Server - CS A call server also refered to as a softswitch or a media gateway controller provides call control according to a call model, handles signalling and controls media and access gateways respectively. It can be found on the control layer of the network using standard protocols or open APIs to interface application servers in order to enable service and policy control like personalized QoS policies, AAA policies, etc. Generally Call Server supports standard protocols to the Media Gateway level and to the Application Server level respectively and takes care of terminal registrations, including authentication and authorisation. The Call Server thus interfaces to application servers (MGCP, MeGaCo, CSTA, LDAP and SIP), to media gateways (MGCP, MeGaCo/H.248), to other call servers (SIP-T, H.323, BICC) and also to signaling gateways (SigTran, SCTP, M3UA and IUA). In the SI2000 NG network, CS controls the basic MGW - Media Gateway and AGW - Access Gateway. The signaling gateway function can be found as an integrated part of Iskratel MGW component. Applications/Services The Media Server - MS The Media Server provides functions that enable interactions between callers (voice) and applications through telephony devices, e.g. it can answer a call, play prompts, invoke menus and finally redirect a call. It is also possible to read an e-mail by using speech synthesis, provide inputs to applications from DTMF or voice commands by using a simple voice-recognition or a complete IVR (Interactive Voice Response ) technology. The media server is usually connected to a content server, which stores voice files and scenarios for services written in a standard VoiceXML. In addition external ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) and TTS (Text To Speech ) features can be applied. . The Media Server provides media resource functions (tone detection, DTMF recognition, speech-synthesis, speech-recognition engines, text-to-speech engines, etc.), media control functions that provide applications with control over media resources (e.g. play prompt, record message, etc.) and call-processing functions (start a new call, transfer a call, etc.). The Media Server can be set up in two basic modes of operation, either as a stand-alone server (voice portal for NGN) without a call server or as a Media Server controlled by a call server. The Video Server - VS The video server is a network-attached server for video that is connected to a universal packet IP/Ethernet network. It can deliver live video, either automatically or on request, to a browser or any other professional applications. Live video broadcast and security systems have traditionally been based on analog CATV technology, but now they are also available for solutions in the packet network. Video servers digitize analog video sources and distribute digital video over an IP network turning analog cameras into network cameras. The major advantage of a video server is higher flexibility and lower costs. In addition, it offers remote access to real-time video and live video distribution anywhere by means of an IP network connection. Video server technology offers remote access of images utilizing the IP network, transparent integration with other systems and applications, lower total cost of ownership by leveraging the existing network infrastructure and legacy equipment and quick and easy search and post-production capabilities of digitally-stored images. Management The Element Manager The SI2000 V6 MN (Management Node) is a common, centralized, uniform management platform for Iskratel SI2000 NG components, covering the following management areas: accounting, configuration, fault management, performance, security and system management. The alarm surveillance application is based on the standard SNMP protocol and provides views in the tree form (default) and user-defined views of nodes, a list of their detailed alarms, automatic polling and traps receiving, together with a set of reports sent to various output devices. With an optional "Northbound" X.733-compliant interface it allows connectivity to higher-level fault-management applications. The MN platform varies from a single, portable PC (MT Management Terminal) locally connected to a single network element, up to a remotely connected multiprocessor, fault-tolerant server configuration with several clients, capable of managing several modules, which are accessible via an IP connection.

Applications and Solutions

Your Services Become Multi-media, and Your Costs Are Lower Than Ever The SI2000 NG Media Gateway products currently provided by Iskratel are based on an open and modular architecture. They enable operators to deploy VoIP trunking, SS7 tunneling and PSTN off-load solutions. This is done using signaling gateway features between PSTN (DSS1/SS7) and IP signaling protocols (H.323) when limited supplementary services are available or using standard tunneling of SS7 signaling over H.323, with a broad range of supplementary services available between tunnel endpoints. Service providers can additionally benefit from integrated narrowband remote access and internet roaming support. Media Gareways enable a seamless integration to PSTN and IP networks, with special attention paid to standardized transport of SS7 over an IP network. In addition to transparent transport of ISUP supplementary services (Centrex features), MGW enables call routing based on the number dialed, operator data, originating subscriber category, seizure type, incoming trunk group, real-time, calling subscriber or incoming trunk group belonging to a group for which a specific call routing is required. An alternative routing with different criteria is also possible. Additionally, the priority-call feature offers the calling subscriber a higher probability of setting up a call if only a limited number of telephone resources exist. With its universal port functionality (the same port can be used for voice and data) MGW provides a cost-effective solution for integrating narrow-band remote access (dial-in) with VoIP benefits in the same chassis. It supports all the conventional features that are needed for residential users to connect via standard protocols (MLPPP) to the internet or to a corporate network. Seamless integration into the IP network is achieved through routing (RIP, OSPF), VPN protocols (L2TP), and traffic filters. A RADIUS client is included for the authentication, authorization and accounting purposes.

Applications and Solutions

Legacy Network Subscribers in the Packet Network The classic access for analog and ISDN subscribers connected via standard copper pairs and TDM signaling (V5.2, DSS1) was implemented over the past few decades and has become very popular all over the globe. Despite the fact that the number of competing access options and solutions provided by incumbent local exchange carriers (xDSL) or by competitive local exchange carriers (GSM, cable) is continuously increasing, this classic type of access continues to dominate. However, the trends in access and transmission technology suggest that the future is packet-oriented and in some segments this has already been proved. To reduce the risk of losing existing users and ensuring the right direction for a carrier's network development, Iskratel provides a simple, efficient and consistent solution for incumbent carriers. The Access Gateway (AGW) represents the key link between classic access and packet-switching access. The AGW performs as a voice gateway for own-subscriber ports and the analog and ISDN ports of systems connected to AGW over V5.2 or PRI. The AGW is implemented with the standard SI2000 access module and an attached voice gateway module for the transmission of voice and connection to IP-network servers. The product comprises Ethernet port for connection to the IP network, ISDN subscriber ports for the connection of ISDN devices over S0 and Uk0 interfaces, analog subscriber ports for the connection of POTS devices and E1 interfaces for the connection of access modules over V5.2 or ISDN devices over PRI. On the TDM network side AGW supports analog subscriber signaling (pulse, DTMF, FSK), DSS1 signaling on BRI and PRI and V5.2 interface. On the IP network side H.323, MGCP (POTS, transport) and DSS1/IP (ISDN) interfaces are provided. The MN (management node) and the MT (management terminal) are connected to Access Gateway for access-node supervision and management purposes. They are connected directly via an Ethernet link.

CPE Leverage the Intelligence at Your Customers

NGN Solutions

Iskratel's strategy involves offering complete solutions, which means the SI2000 NG product range also comprises the equipment for end users: not only the IP telephone but also the terminal adapters, which provide for the connection of legacy analog phones to a local area network (LAN) and using the advantages of VoIP technology. For users wishing to utilize the devices as soon as possible, or those who are already using devices based on VoIP technology (for example, IP phones), Iskratel already offers the possibility of exploiting all the advantages of VoIP terminals in the legacy PSTN network. We are talking about a VGW that offers the users of IP phones a completely seamless integration into the classic telephone (PSTN) environment. By simply including an add-on unit in the legacy access node, the central processing unit can be upgraded with IP-gateway functionality. The gateway is connected to the master node over the standard V5.2 interface. In this way the IP telephone subscribers are considered by the master node as ISDN subscribers. This means that the VoIP gateway can be connected to an exchange manufactured by a third party that supports the V5.2 ETSI interface. The IP telephones being considered by the master exchange as ISDN phones have almost all the supplementary services provided for ISDN subscribers. These supplementary services should, however, also be supported in an appropriate manner by the telephone sets used. Iskratel's CT310i IP phone has been designed for a perfect match with SI2000 systems. In addition to classic supplementary services (forwarding, diversion, identification presentation, etc.) it also features secretary services (forwarding and pickup of calls by fast keys, line supervision, etc.) and Centrex services. In this way the Centrex network seamlessly crosses the border between telephony and data (computer) worlds, and users are offered a highquality service, while the change of technology underneath the service remains invisible. Furthermore, due to a more universal data technology, new services known from the internet, mobile telephony and CTI applications become available. The user can access the central telephone directory or set up calls directly through a favourite e-mail-reading program.

Has Anyone Seen a SoftSwitch? The clear separation between the network management, the control plane and the content (data) transfer plane resulted in an autonomous product segment in NGNs. It comprises call servers, known also as SoftSwitch, MGC - Media Gateway Controller, etc. One of the more important questions concerning the incumbent Carrier Class operators is when and how, if at all, to start with an NGN. The option of risky new investments, especially the risk of relatively high investments in a whole range of new, unproven equipment and services, as opposed to the option of continuing to use the legacy infrastructure, makes the step to an NGN a very difficult one. Development has not stopped, despite the very difficult economic state in the world. The incumbent local-exchange carriers (ILEC) are confronted with increasingly harsh competition from mobile and cable-network operators. One of the possible ways out of this situation is the solution provided by Iskratel for classic network operators, which is further described in this text. Iskratel offers incumbent carriers an evolutionary transition from the legacy circuit-switched networks to packet networks, also at the callcontrol level. The current solutions are implemented with the Class 5 exchanges, the design of which is not appropriate for the transition to an NGN. The described solution offers the answer to the question when and what to choose in order to satisfy current needs, provide legacy telephone services and be ready for NGNs at the same time. Iskratel's unique solution is based on two key components from Iskratel's SI2000 NG product range: the call server (CS) and the advanced media gateway (MGW). Together they represent the key to the configuration that enables immediate replacement of the Class 4 and Class 5 switches and and the autonomous STP. The call server represents the main network control point that is connected via the packet network with the PSTN signaling point. It controls the advanced media server via the MGCP protocol, which, in addition to the basic function of voice/fax over IP, performs all the supplementary services (announcement). In combination Iskratel Call Server and Media Gateway offer a complete replacement of SI2000 Switch Node. While the latter is a well known, widely deployed and reliable product from SI2000 TDM portfolio, based on the older V5 architecture, the CS + MGW replacement product is based on the latest V6 architecture and is fully NGN ready. This unique product strategy is a key factor in a seamless and low-risk TDM-to-NGN transition.

Is this a Packet of Data or Voice ?

NGN Solutions

In developing networks the difference between traffic types, which is still present and evident today, will soon disappear. Users do not wish to worry about the differences between technologies and traffic types, between voice, data and video. On the other hand, they are very demanding and wish to have a certain service at a certain time, they demand ease of use and a known (as low as possible) price. Because voice is the most basic and the most widely used means of communication, its role and significance in the packet network is undiminished, it simply changes and offers additional communication possibilities. Web sites offer lots of interesting and useful information, and there is nothing to prevent them from being accessible over voice, too. We moved one of the key advantages of the internet, the limitless creativity when designing new services, into the world of voice-enabled services. But unlike the internet, all the end users have very similar equipment and the same quality of services. The media server is a device designed for the execution of voice-enabled services. It is based on Iskratel's platform for NGN elements, which has also been used for the media gateway. It can be connected to the IP (H.323) as well as to the TDM network (SS7, DSS1). Scenarios and voice records can be stored on a remote content server and also locally. The VoiceXML standard enables downloading from any content server. The media server can be used as an autonomous NGN element or integrated into more complex solutions, like the contact center, information services, enterprise solutions, etc. At times when investors in networks and services once again appreciate conservative values, the media server represents the means of gaining some advantages over your competitors in return for a very moderate investment. As with the whole solution, the capacity increases in a simple manner, gradually and without any risks. Particular modules, like ASR or TTS, which are technologically (and also from the investment point of view) more demanding, can be added when and if they become necessary.

IP Centrex - When the Whole World Becomes a Single Office The IP Centrex service is a complete solution for the IP environment. The solution allows a company, regardless of its number of locations, to be connected in a uniform telecommunications system by leasing the IP Centrex service. This system combines packet-switched and traditional telephone networks. As regards telephony services, communication among the devices in different networks (packet, TDM) is performed without restrictions. Next-generation services, such as access to central directories, IP contact centres, voice mail, fax servers, Short Message Service (SMS), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), are only available on next-generation terminal equipment, which includes IP telephones, personal computers that accommodate a telephony application (soft-phone), etc. IP Centrex can be simply upgraded to an existent telephone network, or Centrex service. IP Centrex can be used in a variety of applications. The aim of these applications is to utilize as much as possible IP telephony features, such as using the existing infrastructure, mobility within managed networks, inexpensive start-up and maintenance, and the introduction of new convergent services, which increase the productivity, the reputation, and the ease of use of the end user. The application reduces costs, and is a new source of revenues for the provider. With its next-generation products incorporated in the IP Centrex solution, Iskratel introduces the telephony Centrex service in different forms of packet network: Telephony in the Local Area Network (LAN) Telephony in the Wide Area Network (WAN) Telephony over xDSL (SOHO/teleworking) In addition to the provision of voice services, IP Centrex allows the operator to market and offer new services such as: Home Office Convergence of data services Data connection over Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) Contact centre services Remote contact-centre agents In the simplest IP Centrex variant, the already built infrastructure at the user (most often a LAN) is utilized in order to: reduce costs and speed up the connection of new subscribers, reduce maintenance costs, introduce mobility in a maintained network, introduce new services not supported by traditional Centrex. VoIP subscribers are connected to the user's LAN. The subscribers use traditional Centrex features and are provided with the same conventional Centrex telephone services as ISDN subscribers. They can also connect to other servers such as a directory service based on the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), SMS, WAP, and others. These servers allow the launching and marketing of completely new, convergent services. In most of today's WANs, sufficient bandwidth capacity over a long distance can be a problem, and the equipment does not always support the required quality of service (QoS) for voice. On the other hand, users want to utilize WAN connections to the maximum possible extent due to the high costs involved. Even traditional Centrex, with its network functionality, provides for smooth voice transmission across the entire company, connected to different switching systems at a number of locations. IP Centrex is not affected by voice-service bottlenecks in the WAN, as it bypasses them in an elegant manner by using TDM connections. IP Centrex over xDSL is designed both for residential and business users. The technology supports data transfer and IP telephony with all the Centrex services. All that a company has to do is establish an xDSL connection with the operator who, in turn, provides telephony services, access to the internet, central directory service, SMS, remote contact-centre agents, etc. Today, modern, dynamic companies are often spread over many locations; they hire employees on a contract basis, and include them in project teams as required. Such companies find it difficult to match the capacity of their communication systems and office space to the rapid changes in the number of their employees. Teleworking, fully integrated in the information technology and communication infrastructure of the company, is an ideal solution. The Home Office application makes it possible to move a workplace to the home, without intruding into the home telecommunications infrastructure. The home installation is upgraded and provides the user with a company telephone line (with all the services and benefits) and, naturally, with a data connection to the company LAN. IP Centrex offers powerful solutions for tourist areas. Each hotel can be treated as an autonomous unit, and can be connected with other units to form business groups. An IP Centrex system can incorporate, without limitations, the other PSTN lines of apartments and accommodation in the area, regardless how far away they are located. Each PSTN line can become a member of any IP Centrex group. IP Centrex allows hotel and other staff to concentrate on their work, while leaving the telecommunications to be handled by specialists - telecommunications network operators. Furthermore, IP Centrex services are a new source of revenues for the operators.

To Manage Means Taking Control and Earning Money Management plays an important role in NGN architecture with the following principal functionalities: Control of NGN components (network elements) Control of NG networks Control of NGN services Control of NGN business In the case of: An appropriate set-up of multi-layered management functionality in a particular NGN configuration, and more importantly, An appropriate use of it, a service provider could achieve market leadership based on an ability to offer customers high-quality services at the most competitive prices. The SI2000 Element Management Application The SI2000 V6 MN (Management Node) is designed to control SI2000 NGN components that are connected to it by an appropriate DCN, which supports both the TCP/IP and UDP/IP communication protocols. DCN physical realization could be based on external WAN/LAN and/or on internal - embedded 64 kb/s synchronous channels with implemented PPP (pointto-point protocol). The scalable and distributed architecture of the MN software is based on the client-server principle and can be used to manage small to complex network configurations.. The server applications are running permanently in the background while the different client applications are started by the authorized user (maintenance staff, node administrator) and are linked to appropriate server processes in the background. The server parts of the management applications also acquire the test results from the NGN components, and transfer them to the central database. MN contains a powerful set of element management and controlling functions, different security levels and a modern graphical user interface. In addition to O&M features, the additional server applications on the MN provide standards-based interfaces for interoperability with third-party Operational and Business Support Systems (OSS/BSS), i.e. for the integration into fault management and the accounting platform. The SI2000 MN V6 can be installed on a standard, up-to-date PC platform (or PC notebook) or even on a system with high availability in the case of very high reliability requirements. SI2000 Network and Service Management Applications The SI2000 NMN (Network Management Node) is the platform for the gradual implementation of SI2000 Network Management for Iskratel's generally geographically dispersed SI2000 networks (TDM, BB, NGN) interconnected by available telecommunication network resources. The SI2000 NMN basically represents a network alarm surveillance system featuring: Hierarchical presentation of the configuration and the status of the geographically separated SI2000 networks. Alarm and event handling. The functionality is based on data provided from the integrated SI2000 MNs using an optional X.733-compliant SI2000 MN SNMP proxyagent as its "Northbound" interface. The SI2000 NMN can integrate all coexisting network systems (transport, power supply, etc.) as well as ensuring that these systems have available the appropriate "Northbound" interfaces. The SI2000 NMN can be upgraded with additional SI2000 network-management applications according to specific needs. Based on available interfaces, the SI2000 NMN can be integrated with one of the service assurance platforms (e.g. Remedy ARS with its set of applications: Help Desk, Trouble Ticketing, Inventory-Asset Management, Change Management and Service Level Agreement) thus setting up the environment for the implementation of the system for organized resolving of problems occurring during SI2000 network operation and use - SI2000 NSAN (Network & Service Assurance Node).
