Canada's Largest Earthquake Drill
Recent Earthquake has BC Shakeout Organizing Com-
mittee Urging BC Residents to Prepare.
On Friday, September 9 at 12:48 pm a 6.4 magnitude
earthquake along with a series of signifcant afershocks
occurred just of the west coast of Vancouver Island, with
mild shaking felt in many BC jurisdictions. British Colum-
bia is on one of the most active seismic faults in the world
and there are approximately 1200 earthquakes per year.
On Tursday, October 20 at 10:20 am thousands of Brit-
ish Columbians will make history and join others along
the west coast of the United States, the Central United
States, Guam and New Zealand in the largest earthquake
drill in the world. To date over 110,000 BC residents have
signed up to participate! With the recent reminder that
BC is in a seismically active zone and with the many les-
sons learned from the recent quakes in Japan and New
Zealand, the Shakeout BC Organizing Committee would
like to encourage all residents in British Columbia to
register today for the Great British Columbia Shakeout
drill. Te drill takes only a minute of your day and of-
fers residents, businesses and agencies the opportunity
to practice the recommended safety technique of Drop,
Cover and Hold-On, while at the same time serve as a
reminder to review emergency plans and your emergency
supplies.

Te Nelson Waldorf is happy to an-
nounce that we are experiencing our
strongest enrolment in 7 years with
almost 175 children attending.
Beverley Barcham, School Admin-
istrator, commented, It feels good to
know our school is in such a place of
health, both fnancially and socially.
Part of our success is due to our frst
year free of tuition incentive which
allows families to experience and try
out Waldorf education with no fnan-
cial risk. We are fortunate too that

moving and could not take her to her new home. When she
frst came in she was very frightened and was on
the defense whenever someone came
near.
With
time and
patience she came
around to enjoying our
company (thanks to treats and
wet food...) and even went out into
foster for a while to have some home
time. As the months went by Cerafna
became a bit of a staff favourite with
her sassy attitude and beautiful big eyes
but it was hard to fnd her a home with
someone who appreciated her fair for
independence.
In July, Cerafna was our Pet of the Week in Pennywise
and was seen by a local family. They later came in to the
Adoption Centre to meet Cerafna where
they quickly fell in love and she
went home with them that day.
We have spoken with them
just recently and they are so
grateful to have found her as she
has settled in perfectly in their home.
I thought this story was perfect to share
with you as Pennywise helped Cerafna
out in two ways. Your ad was the one that
helped her fnd her new family and the room
that you sponsor was the room she stayed in
while she was in our care. Cerafna was our
longest resident at the centre for the time that I
have been with the SPCA and I`m sure she would
send a meow of thanks if she could.

Hello there folks! I want to introduce you to a couple
of great felines! Chloe and Eric were surrendered to
the Trail shelter when their original home had too
many cats. Chloe is a lovely grey and white long haired
beauty, 5 years old and already spayed. Her other half
is Eric, who is 6 years old. He is a soft coated brown
neutered tabby.
Since being here at the shelter, it has been nice getting
to know them. Chloe is a quiet and sweet girl who likes
to be petted, and loves a little wet food as a treat. Eric
has really come out of his shell, and loves attention
now. Wet food wins him over and he likes a good
blanket to sleep under from time to time.
Being adopted separately, I am sure they would do just
fne, but if you are looking for a pair of older cats, these
two would shine a little brighter.
All is left is for you to come on over to the Trail shelter
and say hello. Chloe and Eric can be found hanging out
together in their kennel, usually relaxing and watching
all that goes on in their room. The shelter staf do all
we can to make their life here as full as possible, but
I think your living room would be a better place for
these two!

Adjust Headrests
While buckling seatbelts is second nature when getting
into a car, how many of us think to adjust the headrest?
According to an Insurance Bureau of Canada study, only
14 per cent of drivers on the road have their headrest in
the proper position.
Avivas Convertini recommends that Canadian drivers
follow three simple steps in order to prevent injuries as-
sociated with improper headrest position:

the top of your head.
Position the centre of your headrest so that it is slightly
above the top of the ear.
Ensure that the distance between the headrest and the
back of the head is between fve and ten centimetres.

Good Fences And Good Cans
Make Good Neighbours
Nelson, Area E and F Bear Aware has now lent out 9
electric fencing setups to residents to protect chickens and
fruit trees from bears. Properly installed and maintained
electric fencing does discourage bears. Eleven people at-
tended our recent electric fencing workshop (sponsored
by the CBT and RDCK). We now have no more fencers to
lend for this season, but you can still contact Bear Aware
(nelsonrdck@bearaware.bc.ca) for information and as-
sistance with fencing.
Garbage is still the primary bear attractant in our area
and across the province. Nelson now has a wildlife at-
tractant bylaw (3198 Waste Management and Wildlife
Attractant Bylaw), that among other things, restricts the
presence of curbside garbage to the hours of 5 am to 7
pm on the day of collection. In addition, garbage must
be stored in a wildlife resistant structure or garbage con-
tainer. Please contact the city for more information and
check the city website to read the actual bylaw.
Bear Aware has worked with Nelson Farmers Supply
to bring a sample bear-resistant can from Rollins Ma-
chinery into Farmers Supply. You can order similar or
larger cans from Rollins through Farmers Supply. Tere
are other bear-resistant containers available and you can
visit www.bearaware.bc.ca to fnd the best option for
your needs. Tese cans have been properly tested against
grizzly bears. Tey provide an option for people unable
to store garbage in a secure structure between collection
days. Bear-resistant cans must be kept clean and secured
to keep a bear from taking the entire can.

Local Dog Trainer
Earns Elite Certifcation
Jeanne Shaw, a resident of Slocan Park recently gradu-
ated with distinction from Karen Pryor Academy and has
been named a Certifed Training Partner. Shaw is com-
mitted to force-free training techniques that make a dif-
ference in the lives of pets and their owners.
Shaw has been training dogs for about 10 years. A spe-
cial education teacher by training, she retired from the
feld in order to work full time with people and their dogs.
She ofers basic manners classes for family pets as well as
specialty classes in agility, dancing with dogs and com-
petitive obedience. In the spring of 2009 she obtained cer-
tifcation from the council for professional dog trainers.
Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behavior
is an innovative institution committed to educating, certify-
ing, and promoting the next generation of animal trainers.
World-renowned trainer, author, and behavioral biolo-
gist Karen Pryor is a pioneer of force-free training tech-

You are invited to a fun afernoon of singing and listen-
ing to songs at the Capitol Teatre (421 Victoria Street)
in Nelson on Sunday, October 2 at 2 pm to celebrate the
launch of a new seniors Sing-along book: Sing Together.

all ages from the area: Glacier Harmony, Second Winds,
Barbershop Chorus as well as other individuals and spe-
cial guests. Tis project was made possible by Friends of
Nelson Elders and funded by New Horizons for Seniors
Programme (NHSP).

ODB Tanksgiving Dinner
Our Daily Breads Annual Community Tanksgiving
Dinner is here once again. Te turkey dinner with all the
fxings will be held on Monday, October 10, 5 pm at 812
Stanley Street (Our Daily Bread Hall) and will be a kick-
of for the Nelson Action on Homelessness Week.
Te Nelson Investors Group has donated $250 to this
campaign; some of their employees will be volunteering
to serve and cleanup at the dinner, as well. Tis is the
eighth year that the Nelson Investors Group has been in-
volved with Our Daily Breads Annual Tanksgiving Din-
ner. We rely on our volunteers and donations to provide
this Tanksgiving meal. Last year, there were over 150
people in attendance from the community.
Our Daily Bread, located at 812 Stanley Street, runs fve
days per week year-round and is almost completely run
by volunteers. Our Daily Bread is a barrier-free environ-
ment that is open to anyone.
Currently, Our Daily Bread receives no government
funding and relies on donations from community mem-
bers and corporate sponsors. Our Daily Bread has part-
nered with S.H.A.R.E. (Supporting Humanity and Re-
sponsible Ecology) Nelson, one of Nelsons second hand
furniture stores, and receives $18,000 in annual sup-
port from them in order to continue its operations. It is
the hope of the management of S.H.A.R.E. Nelson that
S.H.A.R.E. Nelson will be able to completely support Our
Daily Bread from its profts as well as other humanitarian
projects in the near future.
Many of the guests who come to Our Daily Bread have
commented that without the meal provided, they would
be unable to survive. For many, this meal means that they
dont have to choose between paying the rent and feed-
ing their families. Without the support of the community,
Our Daily Bread would not be able to provide this basic
need for the people of Nelson.

Know About Carbon Monoxide
In certain weather it can be tempting to bring heaters
or portable generators into enclosed or partially enclosed
camping spaces like tents, cars, campers or RVs. However,
fuel-based camping equipment like heaters, stoves, barbe-
cues and kerosene lamps are meant to be used outside be-
cause they can emit deadly Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas.
CO is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that
blocks your bodys ability to absorb oxygen. It is produced
when a fuel such as gasoline, oil, kerosene, natural gas,
wood or propane burns incompletely.
When appliances like barbecues or stoves are brought
into enclosed spaces, carbon monoxide (CO) can get
trapped creating a toxic and potentially lethal environ-
ment. As part of a carbon monoxide safety campaign,
the BC Safety Authority is currently urging all campers
to keep warm with extra clothes and blankets and leave
appliances outside.
Immediately seek medical attention if you or anyone
else shows symptoms of CO poisoning:
Headaches;
Nausea/fu like symptoms;
Dizziness;
Drowsiness;
Confusion;
Impaired judgment;
Lack of physical coordination;
Unconsciousness.

Kaslo Boys Town
Mentorship Program
Have you heard about the new boys program being
launched by North Kootenay Lake Community Services?
Its called Boys Town!
Tis October, Boys Town is kicking of a 1-year group
mentorship program that will host weekly afer-school
and weekend activities for boys. Te outcome is to have
fun, gain life and success skills, strengthen self-esteem
and encourage each other. Te program has room for up
to 12 boys from Kaslo and area for ages 9 to 13.
Te program is also looking for adult mentors with a
range of skills and interests who want to contribute to this
project by teaching a skill or simply joining in the fun and
helping out. Tere are already ofers for bike rides, soap
stone carving, and woodworking!
Boys Town will be facilitated by NKLCSSs new Youth
Outreach Boys Mentor, Brodie Whitney. Brodie is a local
resident, father, mentor and life coach and is very excited
to see this project going ahead.
Tis initiative is part of a larger project created by the
Kootenay Boundary Community Services Co-operative and
is funded by the Community Action Initiative. Tere are 5
boys mentorship programs, all happening under the same
umbrella, in Kaslo, Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, and Rossland.
Tere is limited space for this so sign up soon and know
your kids are doing something great! Accepting applica-
tions until Friday, October 7 at noon.
