October 19 - 21, 2011

Case Study as a Pedagogic Tool for Management Teachers in Marketing, Strategy & Finance
Case Pedagogy Need & Importance:
Case pedagogy is a very popular mode in enhancing application of management concepts. A number of B-Schools over the world are using case pedagogy as a strong alternative to pure lecture mode. There are more than 2000 business schools in India using cases apart from the chalk and talk pedagogy. The lecture pedagogy in its basic mode, finds the participant to be a passive learner and the delivery of the course is in a monologue with little or no student participation. Such non participation is particularly high and will not enable stimulating thought process for understanding issues in management. However, in the Case Based method the participant becomes active learner engaged in Situation Analysis, Problem Analysis, Decision Analysis and Post Decision Analysis. Case based teaching enables the participant to prepare prior to the teacher's lecture and understand at his/her level the concept and application of the concept. The role of faculty member will shift from being a lecturer to a case discussant. In case pedagogy stress is given to active learning over passive or inactive learning. Further, the case method of teaching uses structured case studies to stimulate classroom discussions within specific contexts and for teaching business concepts. The concept of teaching Business Management through case studies was inspired by successful application of case based teaching in Medicine and Law. The courses offered in management like Finance, Marketing, Human Resources, Operations etc., are more application oriented and cases provide the learner with a real life feel of the business situation. This is because the case method encourages the students to take an active role in the discussion of possible solutions for the problem at hand. It becomes very easy for them if the concepts are delivered using live examples with proper details where they can put their own learning over the years and discuss and analyze to enrich their level of understanding. The proposed workshop would enable the participants to restructure their teaching method and curriculum, to suit the demands of a good student body.
