New Joliet Bishop Conlon Talks About Being Sent to Serve by Christ
During his installation Mass, Bishop R. Daniel Conlon of Joliet, Ill., stressed the need for bishops to be humble, courageous and conscious of their role as someone sent by God. I did not seek to be a bishop, nor am I worthy to be one, he said in his homily. This is all someone elses idea. And, although God may use human instruments, in the end, it is his idea. With Christ Jesus, the ultimate apostle, as the model, nothing central to our faith starts with us: not the Scriptures, not the sacraments, not the doctrines, not the moral principles. Nor can we treat Gods household as though it were our own, he continued. The bishops installation took place at Joliets Cathedral of St. Raymond Conatus on July 14. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago and Joliet auxiliary Bishop Joseph Siegel were among the concelebrants of the Mass. Also present was Bishop Conlons predecessor in Joliet, J. Peter Sartain, who became the archbishop of Seattle in December 2010. Bishop Conlon noted the bishops role as a successor of the apostles who are sent by Jesus. They are not designated as smart or experienced or holy, but rather as those who are sent. Accepting this role requires humility, steadfastness and courage, he said: The one sent must remain faithful to the sender, no matter what. In his homily, the bishop reflected about how those who borrow their beliefs from popular culture will always be right in their own mind. But where is the sense of being sent, of being beholden to the God, who revealed himself through the one Word made flesh? Who continues to guide the one Church by the one Spirit? he asked. Indeed, without the sense of being sent, there is no oneness at all. We are just individuals thinking and doing our own thing and presuming God agrees with us. As he brought his homily to a close, the bishop specifically addressed his new flock in Illinois. You represent the vitality and diversity of hundreds of thousands of good people who have been called to faith in Christ Jesus and membership in his Church, he told local Catholics at the Mass. What a joy it is for me to be with you.

Good Faithful Stewards

Why do people leave Mass early?

Dear Padre, While on vacation, I attended Mass at a church where many people left right after Communion. Why would they do this? ~ Adrianne D. Dear Adrianne, Canon law says the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass on Sundays and other holy days. We are expected to attend the entire Mass. A misunderstanding of this law may be traced to a pre-Vatican II teaching. Some theologians taught the Mass had three principle parts; offertory, consecration, Communion. Some people reasoned that their obligation would be fulfilled by attending only those parts of the Mass. They felt justified in coming late and leaving early. This changed with Vatican II. The Mass is divided into four sections; Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, Concluding Rite. But none is more important than the other because Christ is present throughout the Mass. Attending Mass means we are there from the opening hymn through the recessional hymn. Some people have valid reasons for leaving Mass early, such as feeling ill or taking a crying child from church. Perhaps they are traveling and need to get to the airport on time. I, too, wonder why some churches have a great exodus before the Mass has ended. It is a practice which, in my opinion, should cease immediately. Fr Vic Karls, C.Ss.R

Year of the Eucharist 2010-2011 CHANGES TO THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE 3RD EDITION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL INVITATION TO THE PARISH COMMUNITY OF CHRIST THE KING

Page 7

"The Rite of the Mass will not change. The changes...deal with linguistics... how we say the prayers and how the assembly responds to the dialogs that are between them and the priest. The Living Mass, Fr. Heliodoro Lucatero. The parish community is invited to join in the journey to know why the changes in the Roman Missal were made, who made the changes, what the actual changes are and how they are to be implemented. The implementation date here in America has been slated for November 27, 2011, the First Sunday of Advent. Liturgy is dynamic and evolving, and with the new translation, liturgy will continue to be both a new and ever living tradition. One of the most important reasons for the changes is to make the English translation as close as possible to the original Latin text of the liturgy of the Mass. Aside from the changes in the prayers and the priest-people responses in the liturgy, there will also be some changes in the songs and music. We will find that with all the changes, the Mass celebration is rendered more beautiful, more glorifying of God, more moving, spiritually engaging, more reverent, and all will tend to bring us closer to experiencing the biblical basis of the Mass, the Presence of Jesus Christ as at the Last Supper, and the reality of the magnificence, goodness, greatness and majesty of God. There are two different study formation opportunities for the New Translation of the Roman Missal. The first is the Understanding the Revised Mass Texts. The training is broken into 2 sessions of 2 hours each. You can attend both sessions on the same day, or Session A on one day and Session B on another day. Each and every Liturgical and Catechetical Minister must attend. The times are as follows: Saturday, August 20, 9:00-1:00 pm. (Both A & B Sessions) Sunday, August 28, 1:00-4:00 pm. (Both A & B Sessions) Tuesday, September 13, 9:00-11:00 am. (Session A) Wednesday, September 14, 9:00-11:00 am. (Session B) Monday, September 19, 7:00-9:00 pm. (Session A) Tuesday, September 20, 7:00-9:00 pm. (Session B) Saturday, September 24, 9:00-1:00 pm (Both A & B Session) The second is called the Biblical Walk through of the Mass. This is a 5 week, one and half hour bible study. If you are unable to make any of the above sessions and would like to attend, The Biblical Walk through of the Mass would qualify for training purposes. The times are as follows: Wednesdays: September 7 & 21, October 5 & 19 and November 2 at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays: October 8, 15, 22, 29 and November 5 at 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays: October 18 & 25 and November 1, 8 &15 at 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Beginning in October at each weekend Mass, we will have a presentation for the entire community on the Mass translation. Please watch for more information on the new translation and further announcements about the upcoming sessions for our journey.

July 31, 2011

We hope you are enjoying your summer! We have been very busy at the Academy preparing for the new school year! As always, we work together on curriculum and changes that make us improve on what we have established at our preschool and kindergarten programs. We are looking to grow, in particular in our kindergarten class! If you know of anyone who is looking for a quality, catholic kindergarten program please refer them to Mrs. Placey @630-627-0640. Mrs. Placey is always willing to give tours and answer questions. We have found out that we are leading the Diocese of Joliet in technology with our Smart Boards and readily available computers in our classrooms! Seeking to keep that cutting edge in technology, we have added Jolly Phonics software to our Smart Boards. Jolly Phonics is nothing new, but the software for touch learning and interactive activities is VERY new! We are proud to offer this innovative technology to our students! We invite you to mark your calendar for our next Open House on August 19 from 4-6PM to see it in action! We are blessed with many things! If you havent already guessedthe Academy is like a diamond in the rough! Adults, who no longer have young children, wish they had, just so they could send them to the Academy for preschool and kindergarten! Our students are not stuck in one classroom, but have the opportunity to learn in other special rooms like chapel, math, science, music, gym, and library! Our students learn basic school routines faster and receive more attention with curriculum! We would like to thank George Diamandopoulos, owner of Maxfields Pancake House and Restaurant at 352 E. Roosevelt Rd. for letting our Academy advertise in the menu! Courtney and Dolores would be happy to take your order and serve you a delicious meal! Thank you for supporting the Early Learning Academy! During the month of August, we have some professional development for our staff, including hosting the Early Education Seminar for the Diocese of Joliet. We will be making last minute touches for the Open House and hope to see you there on August 19th! Enjoy the rest of your summer and may God bless and keep you safe, Mrs. Placey

Why Was The Roman Missal Revised?

Kristopher W. Seaman
For several years, bishops in English-speaking countries have been working together to produce a unified translation of the texts of the Mass. The book used by the priest at eucharistic liturgies is officially called The Roman Missal. We have been calling that red book The Sacramentary; however, in the future it will be called The Roman Missal. The Roman Missal contains all of the prayers of the eucharistic liturgy. The Order of Mass, prayers for a feast day, Solemn Blessings, and Eucharistic Prayers are all found in The Roman Missal. The current prayer texts with which we are familiar are from the Missal of Pope Paul VI. At the Second Vatican Council, it was decided that liturgical texts could be prayed officially in vernacular languages. This approval came in November of 1963, when the Council issued the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. This document provides the vision for all subsequent liturgical reforms in the Roman Catholic Church. The bishops, then, reformed the liturgical books for the sacraments, including the Eucharist or Mass. The result was the 1969 Missal of Paul VI, a fully revised book though published in Latin. Subsequently, the Missal was translated into vernacular languages around the world. In 2000, to commemorate the new millennium, Pope John Paul II established a third edition of The Roman Missal. This edition includes more ancient prayers and saints days that have been established since the publication of the Missal of Pope Paul VI. As with all liturgical books, this edition of The Roman Missal was first published in Latin. Thus, national bishops conferences have been working to translate the Missal in the local languages of the people. One reason for this revised translation is obviously the additions to the Missal. The second is due to new norms for translating liturgical texts. The document Liturgiam authenticam (Fifth Instruction for the Right Implementation of the Constitution), from the Holy See, called for a more literal translation of the Latin. A considerable amount of time has been spent trying to accurately translate the Latin texts into English in a literal manner. After approving the revised English translation of The Roman Missal, the Englishspeaking bishops conferences sent the texts to the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments for review. Once reviewed, the translation is submitted to the Holy See for recognitio. Basically, recognitio is the Latin term for recognizing the translation. After the recognitio was given, the Bishops Committee on Divine Worship determined the changes the Congregation has made to the translation. Then the text was sent to publishers. The publishers will have to typeset and send proofs to the Bishops Committee on Divine Worship for final approval before printing The Roman Missal. This process will take more than a year because of the enormous amount of texts included in The Roman Missal. The new ritual edition will be available in October of 2011. Although the Holy See approved some of the texts in 2008, they were not to be used at Mass until Rome had given recognitio to the entire translation and provided an implementation date. The wait for the approval of all of the prayers of the Mass allowed time for the composition of music for the Gloria; the Holy, Holy, Holy; and other parts of the Order of Mass. It also provided time for pastoral leadership to understand the reasons for the revisions and to begin educating their assemblies. In this time between the implementation of the revised edition of The Roman Missal and the implementation, parishes will continue to educate their communities. As your parish studies the revised translation, you will see that many of the priests and peoples parts have changed. For example, when the priest celebrant proclaims, The Lord be with you, the people will reply, And with your spirit. That response is the direct translation of 2 Timothy 4:22. Other revisions, too, will help assemblies relate the prayers of the Mass to scripture. The response to the Lamb of God, for example, clearly alludes to the Centurions request that his servant be healed (see Matthew 8:8 and Luke 7:6). You may find it helpful to review the information on The Roman Missal at www.RevisedRomanMissal.org. The revised prayers of the Mass will be implemented on November 27, 2011.
