A monthly update from Thomas A.

Cavalieri, DO, FACOI, FACP, AGSF, Dean

Volume 6, Number 6 June 2011

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

As many of you know, on Monday, June 27th, Dr. Sol Barer, Chair of the UMDNJ Advisory Committee, and Mr. Anthony Perno, a Committee member, accompanied by Mr. David Weinstein from the Governors Office, visited the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM) and the Stratford Campus. During a formal presentation, several meetings and a campus tour, our deans, chairs, Institute Directors, a student leader, faculty and staff members from basic science and clinical areas, and the deans of our five sister schools of UMDNJ on the Stratford campus, had an opportunity to interact with the Advisory Committee members. The committee gained a real understanding of the breadth, depth and quality of our school and campus. Moreover, the special spirit, commitment and teamwork that characterize UMDNJ-SOM and the Stratford campus came across clearly. Our visitors were very impressed with what they saw and heard. Everyone from the school and campus who was involved in the site visit contributed to the days success. Also, every UMDNJ-SOM faculty member, staff member and student, whether or not directly involved in the visit, helped, too, through the contributions you make here each day. Thank you for your dedication to our school and the continued fulfillment of our mission of excellence in education, research, health care and service. We particularly appreciate your commitment at this time of challenge and potential change. Based upon the feedback I received in my private, closing session of the day with the Advisory Committee visitors, I am confident that the important contributions of UMDNJ-SOM and the Stratford campus to our professions, our region and the State of New Jersey are appreciated and will be valued in any recommendations that the Advisory Committee may make to Governor Christie. We will keep you informed as the Advisory Committee process moves ahead.

GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION (GME) GRADUATIONS

In the month of June, we acknowledge the progress of our Graduate Medical Education (GME) Trainees in pursuit of their career goals. We congratulate our interns, residents and fellows, who have graduated from our Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution (OPTI). At each step of the GME process completion of internship, residency or fellowship these new physicians demonstrate a higher level of the skills and knowledge that ultimately will contribute to making them outstanding doctors. It is an honor to mentor these physicians-in-training in clinical knowledge and skills, humanism and professionalism in the care of individual patients and their communities. For over 30 years, our OPTI program, one of the largest in the country, though our strong association with our principal hospital, Kennedy University Hospital (KUH), our major clinical affiliate, Lourdes Health System (LHS) and our five other OPTI hospital partners across the state, has provided trainees with a broad array of collaborative clinical experiences with faculty renowned in their fields.
