PILOT is a Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) navigation and threat detection radar with multiple applications. It has better range resolution and close range performance than a pulsed navigation radar but the same detection range.

Many of todays military users are specifying LPI as a crucial tactical requirement. This is due to the increased capability of Electronic Support Measures (ESM) equipment to detect and locate a source of radiation and the increased threat from Anti-Radiation Missiles (ARM). The Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) principle is outstanding for this purpose, as it makes a very low output power level possible (1W continuous wave, selectable down to 1 mW). This gives an ESM system a very short detection range while PILOT has the same navigation radar detection range as conventional pulsed radars with peak power levels of several kW. High range resolution and excellent close range performance are also achieved by using the FMCW principle.

An advanced transceiver design has made it possible to combine the FMCW transmission with a conventional single X(I)-band antenna. This enables easier integration with surface ships and is essential on submarines. Even a close visual inspection will not reveal the existence of PILOT onboard. The system gives a real-time video output signal which follows the same standard as the video from any conventional pulsed radar and can easily be directly integrated with such radars and with other external systems.
The transceiver unit has been reduced in size to fit inside a submarine mast

The stand-alone PILOT configuration consists of a Transceiver Unit (TRU) and a Signal Processor Unit (SPU). To create a complete radar system for a navigation application, the units should be integrated with a standard antenna and turntable as well as a display or MFC, (which should include ARPA functionality). The standard video and control interfaces of the PILOT allow flexible integration with virtually all X(I) band antennas and displays/MFCs on the market.

The standard interfaces also allow a unique ability to use PILOT connected and operated in parallel with any available pulsed navigation radar system. In the add-on configuration, a waveguide switch is installed between the antenna and the pulsed transceiver allowing either PILOT or the pulsed radar to use the antenna. The video from either radar is then switched to the display/MFC using an internal video switch.
