New courts for Bogwasha Primary School

On Thursday last week, Bogwasha Primary School in Praktiseer officially opened their new tennis, netball and volleyball courts. The courts were funded with money approved by the Lotto in September 2009. A total of R677 518.80 was received and in 2010 the construction phase kicked-off. Last week a ribbon cutting ceremony took place where the local ward councillor, Ms LR Maroga cut the ribbon. Afterwards opening games were played on the courts. Tennis is very popular in Praktiseer, but until now the people did not have any facilities. These courts will not only benefit the school, but also the community. They can come and play here over the weekends and afternoons, said Mr MD Moshoana, the school principal. A Modikwa Platinum Mine employee volunteered to coach the learners in tennis and any volunteers who would like to become involved with the school can contact Moshoana on 082 412 2386.

Developing more than security skills

In June 2010 a new skills development center opened in Steelpoort in the offices of Thorburn Security Solutions and gradually developed in stature and competence. During the period June 2010 to September 2011 more than 800 security officers underwent modular security skills development in mining security at their Steelpoort training center, contracted mines and at remote areas such as Machadodorp, Phalabora , Venda, Witbank and Badplaas. Each security officer has been refreshed in mining security skills as well as other skills such as customer relations, report writing etc. Training is 20% class room based and the rest on site. Our managers need to develop skills to optimize the qualities of supervisors and supervisors must get more productivity from security officers it is a deficiency in the security industry and the security industry need to address it, Thorburn Managing Director Dolf Scheepers commented. Thorburn Security wants their managers to be world class and therefore groom them in many ways English skills are one of their grooming subjects. Twice weekly an English teacher form Burgersfort train Thorburn Security managers in English at the Steelpoort Academy and the results are visible in the quality of their reports. You dont reap the results of training and skills development in the first month but only over a period of time. We see vast improvements in service delivery, motivation and attitude from security officers and managers following our skills development efforts and are proud of our achievements, Thorburn Managing Director Dolf Scheepers commented. A next step is special operations training in Phalabora for staff performing specialized skills in terms of intelligence gathering, observation and safety inspections in the Eastern Limb. Thorburn Security Solutions, since 2006, is a proud supporter of the Greater Tubatse Area and supports various community initiatives, golf caddie projects, bursaries and local entrepreneurship.

What is Allergic Rhinitis?

Advertorial

ALLERGIC RHINITIS OVERVIEW Rhinitis refers to inflammation of the nasal passages. This inflammation can cause a variety of annoying symptoms, including sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, runny nose, and postnasal drip (the sensation that mucus is draining from the sinuses down the back of the throat). Fortunately, the symptoms of rhinitis can usually be controlled with a combination of environmental measures, medications WHO GETS ALLERGIC RHINITIS? Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, affects approximately 20 percent of people of all ages. Allergic rhinitis can begin at any age, although most people first develop symptoms in childhood or young adulthood. The symptoms are often at their worst in children and in people in their 30s and 40s. However, the severity of symptoms tends to vary throughout life. ALLERGIC RHINITIS CAUSES Allergic rhinitis is caused by a nasal reaction to small airborne particles called allergens. In some people, these particles also cause reactions in the lungs (asthma) and eyes (allergic conjunctivitis). The affected cells produce inflammatory substances, including histamine, that cause fluid to build up in the nasal tissues (congestion), itching, sneezing, and runny nose. ALLERGIC RHINITIS SYMPTOMS The symptoms of allergic rhinitis vary from person to person. Although the term rhinitis refers only to the nasal symptoms, many patients also experience problems with their eyes, throat, ears, and sleep, so it is helpful to consider the entire spectrum of symptoms. Nose: watery nasal discharge, blocked nasal passages, sneezing, nasal itching, post-nasal drip, loss of taste, facial pressure or pain. Eyes: itchy, red eyes, feeling of grittiness in the eyes, swelling and blueness of the skin below the eyes. Throat and ears: sore throat, hoarse voice, congestion or popping of the ears, itching of the throat . ALLERGIC RHINITIS TREATMENT The treatment of allergic rhinitis includes reducing exposure to allergens and other triggers, in combination with medication therapy. In most people, these measures effectively control the symptoms. Reduce exposure to triggers eg. dust, smoke, pollen and other chemicals. Several different classes of drugs counter the inflammation that causes symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Please ask your pharmacist or doctor. Medication, there are different over the counter medicine that can be used to manage the symptoms they are found in the form of oral preparations eg. tablet and syrups while others are used locally eg eye drops, throat spray etc. Ask your pharmacist for more professional help.

ECM Performs well in DQS audit Winter Warmer

DQS South Africa is the Certification Body that specializes in Safety, Health, Environment and Quality(SHEQ) Management System Certification that assists South African and multinational organizations in realizing their SHEQ Management System objectives. DQS surveillance audits were conducted at Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) during the week of 6 to 10 June 2011 to evaluate the various management systems and to retain the relevant certifications (ISO 14001:2004, ISO 9001:2008, BS OHSAS 18001:2007). ECM achieved 10 commendations and 5 minor findings. The findings were closed out and confirmed by the auditors before the auditors completed their audit. General Manager Emile Britz expressed his gratitude towards all ECM employees who are constantly showing their commitment to ensuring that Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality requirements are continuously improved and maintained. Steelpoort Academy in collaboration with Friend in Need initiated a winter warmer campaign involving all the surrounding mines. Samancor Eastern Chrome Mine (ECM) employees donated clothes, blankets, track suites and food.

ECM cares for the community

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) believes that the children are our future and it is critical that companies like ECM invest in local schools. Sehlaku Secondary School is situated at Driekop Village and ECM took the initiative to get involved. The school was in dire need for extra class rooms seeing that they received an enrollment of 1450 learners. ECM donated park homes to the school to assist with accommodating their vast numbers of learners, and also sponsored security fencing to secure the park homes. The areas around the park homes were also paved to assist with dust management. The Principal is Mr Jacob Moshwana expressed his gratitude to ECM.

Winterveld Festival
On 2 and 3 September ECM hosted the Winterveld Festival. The weekend kicked-off with a mining expo and on Saturdays programme was various artists, kiddies entertainment, soapbox race and a potjiekos competition.

ECM puts Safety First

The Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) Training Centre was previously accredited by the MQA for Engineering, Metallurgical and Mineral Excavation (Mining) Training, but recently received a scope extension on the Mineral Excavation accreditation to include Occupational Health and Safety. Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) takes safety very seriously. At the ECM monthly safety meeting that was held in July, the SHEQ team did a demonstration using injury mock ups. The meeting is attended by employees as well as ECM contractors. Accidents were staged where employees were asked to respond and treat the accident victims. By having done first aid training and responding in the correct manner to the injured, one can be sure to save a life! The ECM Training Centre is proud to have trained more than 1300 employees since January 2011 on Basic First Aid Training.

ECM does Advanced Lifting Equipment Training

The Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) Training Centre prides itself on arranging specific training based on the particular needs of the ECM sections. One such example is Lifting Equipment Training. In February, 21 employees completed their Basic Lifting Equipment Course. In July, 16 of the 21 employees enhanced their skills with Advanced Lifting Equipment Training. The aim of such training is to ensure that lifting equipment is properly inspected and used correctly to ensure the safety of ECM employees. One of the core values of ECM is Zero Harm.

Eastern Limb Career Expo

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines was one of proud sponsors of the Eastern Limb Career Expo at Modikwa in August. The ECM team held a display which covered the whole mining value chain. ECM says that mining is a team sport. Different people have different skills, and by pulling it all together in a cohesive manner, you get successful mining. They pulled in CCT who manages their open cast mining sections to demonstrate the open cast mining operations. The children were intrigued by the model size trucks which CCT displayed. ECM also made use of Emtee to display a conveyor belt, feeder and rock breaker. This provided the children with the opportunity to see the actual process but on a much smaller scale. ECM also displayed a model size LHD and UV, as well as educational material on learnerships and careers in opencast and underground mining. And as we all know, a mine is nothing without safety. To make the experience a bit more real, ECM had a life size model of a miner wearing his underground PPE. Jurgens Bekker, Training Superintendent at ECM said that it has been a tremendous experience to be part of such a huge effort which provided the opportunity to create an excitement for mining as a career with at least 7000 children.

Support to local schools

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) is proud to support local schools. Realising the importance of foundation training, ECM has his year supported the Khenzani Program at Makgekantshe Primary, Mangabane Primary, Mapuru II and Kgoboko Primary. The Program is aimed at foundation training for Grade R and Grade 1 students. It covers motor skills, numeracy and literacy skills. Lenkse Buglass, one of the Khenzani Trainers says that the most important outcome of the program is that it improves childrens ability to converse, which in turn develops their confidence. Principal Rebecca Sekgobela says the program has been a huge success and a great blessing to every child involved. The childrens appetite for learning has been ignited. Khenzani uses fun techniques to teach the children. Consequently they are having so much fun without realising they are learning in the process.

Donate blood and save a life

On the 31st of May 2011 Samancor, Eastern Chrome Mines participated in a campaign to donate blood at the Winterveld offices. The motto is Safe blood saves lives. Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines is proud to be involved in such an initiative that can save lives

ECM Lab
Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines built and commissioned their own laboratory in 2009. The laboratory plays a key role in ensuring that product quality is on specification. In May this year, the lab received an assessment by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS). After a process of six months, the ECM lab received their accreditation on 27 July 2011. SHEQ Manager Frank Cotton said :ECM is very proud to have a laboratory of such high quality. Every member of the team is an asset!.

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) is dedicated and committed about Women in Mining. ECM currently employ 280 women in positions right across the value chain of the business. Women accounts for 15% of the total workforce (which is much higher than the required target set in the Mining Charter of 10%). Womens Day is a special occasion whereby the ladies of ECM are recognized for their contribution to the business, and had the opportunity to celebrate their gender. A very special day for the ladies was hosted by ECM and the Winterveld Recreational Club hall was turned into a spectacular sight. At first the ladies were motivated by Loraine Mphahlele, who is a professional entrepreneur and the founder and Executive Director of Investments for African Women Holdings, to inspire and achieve their full potential. After her inspiring talk, the ladies were entertained by the handsome Riba Cross Timers. The ladies thoroughly enjoyed the choirs charm. Then the Riba Cross Civil Society Youth Choir energised the audience with their vibrant singing. Last but not least the ladies enjoyed a special lunch. As the ladies left the celebration, the words

Womens Day celebrated

of Loraine Mphahahlele stayed with them when they remembered her saying: Give a woman a house, and she makes it a home.

Fun at the Wildevy 4x4 Day

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) was one of the proud sponsors of the Wildevy 4x4 Family Day. ECM sponsored obstacle number two on the 4x4 track, a potjie team (manned by ECM Management) and a paramedic stand in partnership with EMCARE. The medical team was available on site in case any serious incidents would occur and fortunately there were no injuries. The one major factor that they had to deal with was sunburn and luckily the medics were ready for sunburn victims! At the obstacle, the ECM team decided to go with a safety theme, seeing that ZERO HARM is one of the core values of ECM. It was a day to remember, the ECM team, as well as the spectators had lots of fun! All the hard work that was put into it was not in vain. The ECM team walked away with the prize for the best point for 2011! Well done ECM!

ECM assists with water to Mampuru Village

A Water Purification Plant was built and commissioned in Mampuru Village during 2010 by the District Municipality, but during the implementation phase a few difficulties and challenges were indentified and the project was delayed. Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) decided to use the opportunity to assist the roleplayers, who included the Municipality and community, b y providing the necessary capacity to complete the project. ECM arranged the COC (Certificate of Compliance), in order for Eskom to connect the power and replaced the non-return valve. ECM also did pipe modifications and replaced the DOL (Direct on line starter) and finally commissioned the plant. The formal handover took place on 15 July 2011. Present during the formal handover was Mr. Tseke Sekhukhune, Metallurgical Manager from ECM and Mr Ntsoane, Senior Manager of the Sekhukhune Water District. Mr. Ntsoane was impressed with the initiative taken by ECM and Mr Rampele, Site Manager of the Sekhukhune Water District and the Water Committee thanked ECM for making a difference in the Mampuru Community. Through this initiative the Mampuru community now has access to water. Mr. Emile Britz, ECM General Manager said that it is important for companies to assist the local municipalities with capacity building.

Dangerous Weapons Bill - what do you think?

This week the Dangerous Weapons Bill had people talking. According to this bill that is currently open for discussion, people will not be allowed to carry anything that is considered a dangerous weapon in a public place. This will allow the SAPS to arrest a person who is found in possession of e.g. a toy gun under suspicious circumstances. Mr Pieter Groenewald of the FF+ was this week quoted saying: The bill describes a dangerous weapon as any object that can injure a person or put temporarily out of action. It is dangerous even if there is only a suspicion that the object can injure someone. A woman who late in the evening carries pepper spray in her handbag can be arrested as she will not be able to claim she carried it in self defence. Dr Johan Burger, senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies however said: It should not be seen as an attempt to disarm people. A reasonable suspicion must exist that a person is at a specific place for crime and wants to use the weapon for an illegal purpose. We asked readers what they think of the bill.

Mnr.

Ms Ivy Ngomane said: Sometimes you find that you innocently work late. You find that there is no bread in the house and you have to go to the shop. We women are in danger. We have to carry something to defend ourselves with. I dont have a husband to defend me and the tsotsis are sitting everywhere. Theyll take my car, everything. You can get raped and get HIV infected. I must still be able to carry something to defend myself.

Mnr.

Ms Cleopatra Mateyo and Ms Salom Phiri said: Especially pepper spray is important for women to defend themselves. Criminals will now go and take real guns instead of toy guns. They are criminals and have access to other weapons. This will increase crime. More people will get killed. Criminals will know people are afraid to carry things that can be seen as against the law and cannot defend themselves.

Mnr.

Mr Isaiah Mathebula said: They must ban weapons completely. Even the legal ones. Then we wont have criminality. A toy can influence a person to want the real thing. Things that defend like pepper spray is ok, but not things that kill. With defensive items there is no problem. Mr Gaonyatse Moroke said: Why should especially women be defending themselves? All dangerous weapons should be banned. It will reduce crime because many people use toy guns in robberies. Yes, boys will be upset if toy guns are banned, but if I never gave my child a toy gun, he will never miss it. Kids watch their fathers and if the father carries a gun, the child wants one too. They follow the example of the fahers. Children must be taught.

Mr Meshack Mavhunda said: Its 50/50. The pros and the cons are heavy on both sides of the argument. It is good that they want to ban the carrying of weapons to reduce crime, but on the other hand they must think as it can also lead to increased crime if people are defenceless.

Mnr. Right: Ms Dineo Makofane said: It will reduce criminality. They use toy guns to rob people and this will now be prevented.
