Babohlale has worked two months in a row without a Disabling Injury. During the last eight months they have worked four months without a single DI. This is an exceptional achievement, taking their difficult ground conditions into consideration. The Manager, Mr. Johann Kotz, the Mine Overseers, Mr. Rudi van den Berg and Mr. Leonard Hlatswayo, together with their whole team
maintain their zero tolerance towards sub standard safety standards. Frequent safety meetings are being held to discuss safety issues, and to increase safety performance. The ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine Management Team would like to congratulate Babohlale for their dedication towards the safety of their employees. ALLERGIC RHINITIS OVERVIEW Rhinitis refers to inflammation of the nasal passages. This inflammation can cause a variety of annoying symptoms, including sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, runny nose, and postnasal drip (the sensation that mucus is draining from the sinuses down the back of the throat). Fortunately, the symptoms of rhinitis can usually be controlled with a combination of environmental measures, medications WHO GETS ALLERGIC RHINITIS? Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, affects approximately 20 percent of people of all ages. Allergic rhinitis can begin at any age, although most people first develop symptoms in childhood or young adulthood. The symptoms are often at their worst in children and in people in their 30s and 40s. However, the severity of symptoms tends to vary throughout life. ALLERGIC RHINITIS CAUSES Allergic rhinitis is caused by a nasal reaction to small airborne particles called allergens. In some people, these particles also cause reactions in the lungs (asthma) and eyes (allergic conjunctivitis). The affected cells produce inflammatory substances, including histamine, that cause fluid to build up in the nasal tissues (congestion), itching, sneezing, and runny nose. ALLERGIC RHINITIS SYMPTOMS The symptoms of allergic rhinitis vary from person to person. Although the term rhinitis refers only to the nasal symptoms, many patients also experience problems with their eyes, throat, ears, and sleep, so it is helpful to consider the entire spectrum of symptoms. Nose: watery nasal discharge, blocked nasal passages, sneezing, nasal itching, post-nasal drip, loss of taste, facial pressure or pain. Eyes: itchy, red eyes, feeling of grittiness in the eyes, swelling and blueness of the skin below the eyes. Throat and ears: sore throat, hoarse voice, congestion or popping of the ears, itching of the throat . ALLERGIC RHINITIS TREATMENT The treatment of allergic rhinitis includes reducing exposure to allergens and other triggers, in combination with medication therapy. In most people, these measures effectively control the symptoms. Reduce exposure to triggers eg. dust, smoke, pollen and other chemicals. Several different classes of drugs counter the inflammation that causes symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Please ask your pharmacist or doctor. Medication, there are different over the counter medicine that can be used to manage the symptoms they are found in the form of oral preparations eg. tablet and syrups while others are used locally eg eye drops, throat spray etc. Ask your pharmacist for more professional help.

ECM Lab
Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines built and commissioned their own laboratory in 2009. The laboratory plays a key role in ensuring that product quality is on specification. In May this year, the lab received an assessment by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS). After a process of six months, the ECM lab received their accreditation on 27 July 2011. SHEQ Manager Frank Cotton said :ECM is very proud to have a laboratory of such high quality. Every member of the team is an asset!.
Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) is dedicated and committed about Women in Mining. ECM currently employ 280 women in positions right across the value chain of the business. Women accounts for 15% of the total workforce (which is much higher than the required target set in the Mining Charter of 10%). Womens Day is a special occasion whereby the ladies of ECM are recognized for their contribution to the business, and had the opportunity to celebrate their gender. A very special day for the ladies was hosted by ECM and the Winterveld Recreational Club hall was turned into a spectacular sight. At first the ladies were motivated by Loraine Mphahlele, who is a professional entrepreneur and the founder and Executive Director of Investments for African Women Holdings, to inspire and achieve their full potential. After her inspiring talk, the ladies were entertained by the handsome Riba Cross Timers. The ladies thoroughly enjoyed the choirs charm. Then the Riba Cross Civil Society Youth Choir energised the audience with their vibrant singing. Last but not least the ladies enjoyed a special lunch. As the ladies left the celebration, the words
of Loraine Mphahahlele stayed with them when they remembered her saying: Give a woman a house, and she makes it a home.

Mnr.
Ms Ivy Ngomane said: Sometimes you find that you innocently work late. You find that there is no bread in the house and you have to go to the shop. We women are in danger. We have to carry something to defend ourselves with. I dont have a husband to defend me and the tsotsis are sitting everywhere. Theyll take my car, everything. You can get raped and get HIV infected. I must still be able to carry something to defend myself.
Mnr.
Ms Cleopatra Mateyo and Ms Salom Phiri said: Especially pepper spray is important for women to defend themselves. Criminals will now go and take real guns instead of toy guns. They are criminals and have access to other weapons. This will increase crime. More people will get killed. Criminals will know people are afraid to carry things that can be seen as against the law and cannot defend themselves.
Mnr.
Mr Isaiah Mathebula said: They must ban weapons completely. Even the legal ones. Then we wont have criminality. A toy can influence a person to want the real thing. Things that defend like pepper spray is ok, but not things that kill. With defensive items there is no problem. Mr Gaonyatse Moroke said: Why should especially women be defending themselves? All dangerous weapons should be banned. It will reduce crime because many people use toy guns in robberies. Yes, boys will be upset if toy guns are banned, but if I never gave my child a toy gun, he will never miss it. Kids watch their fathers and if the father carries a gun, the child wants one too. They follow the example of the fahers. Children must be taught.
Mr Meshack Mavhunda said: Its 50/50. The pros and the cons are heavy on both sides of the argument. It is good that they want to ban the carrying of weapons to reduce crime, but on the other hand they must think as it can also lead to increased crime if people are defenceless.
Mnr. Right: Ms Dineo Makofane said: It will reduce criminality. They use toy guns to rob people and this will now be prevented.
