In Figure 1 there is a TV tower which has a shaft, observation building and an antenna. Suppose the tower can be modeled as a fixed-free beam. The whole tower can be considered as a SDOF system, the y-coordinate being at the middle of observation building (y-coordinate is in the lateral direction of the building). Original damping ratio of the structure is 5%. To dampen the excessive vibrations, a new damping system is implemented to the tower such that damping of the structure is adjustable. When the tower starts to vibrate, damping of the structure becomes 3 times of the original value. Then, after the tower starts vibrating freely, damping remains 3 times of the original value for 2 seconds before returning to its original value. A vibrating roller is working near the TV tower and it causes the tower to vibrate. Measurements are done on the observation building and it is seen that amplitude of vibration while the roller is working can be approximated as:

y (t ) = 0.001 sin(15.5 2 t ) m
The vibrating roller stops suddenly after 3 seconds and the structure starts to vibrate freely. In other words, roller operates during seconds.

Note: Assume the shaft has constant cross-section and neglect the weight of antenna

a) Plot the time history of the displacement, velocity, and acceleration of the vibrations at the free end for t<20-s. (do not plot the response during the shaking period due to the vibrating rollers). b) Determine how much time it takes for 95% of the energy of the vibrations to be dissipated. c) Draw bending moment diagram for the fixed end. d) Repeat steps (a) and (b) if the vibrating roller stops after 2 seconds. e) Repeat steps (a) and (b) if the vibrating roller stops after 2.5 seconds. IMPORTANT NOTES: This term project WILL be collected and graded. Therefore, please use the first as a cover page for your project. Please direct your questions to the assistants that prepared this assignment. Late submissions will be penalized by severe percent reduction. You can learn your list number from the course web site.

ABOUT THE PROJECT: Give all of the references (books, papers, class notes etc) you use. Present all of the calculations in full detail and in a neat form. Explain each step of your solution clearly. Solutions must be hand-written. Fully annotate the plots (i.e. state plot titles and axis labels in detail with corresponding units). Provide units with your results. You can use any software and/or programming language provided that you present full detail about the tools you use, i.e. you must supply all the input/output evidences in printed form as well as the source listings of your program, and the name of the program used. Do not submit the print-out of the tabulated data which is used for plotting the variations of parameters with respect to others. The solutions you submit must be the product of your own personal efforts. Any help which you get from others in any form must not be beyond discussions on the solution methods used and/or cross-checking your findings. Otherwise, you will get a zero from the assignment.
