I’ve divided my talk in 3 main parts. First, I’m going to talk about what you often
hear : “The climate is changing”. Follow by the argument that CO2 is not the main
reason for Global Warming, and finally is the actual cause of this phenomenon.
First of all, I’ll start with the changing climate. You have been told that the earth
climate is changing. But, the truth is the climate has always been changing. Since it
was established, the earth has experienced periods of much hotter and colder
weather, such as the Little Ice Age in the fourteen century or the Medieval Warm
period and many other periods in the further history. The earth temperature had
risen in the one hundred-year period from the mid 19th century to the 1940s, and in
the following 4 decades, the period of the World War II and the economic boom, it
decreased while theoretically we think that it must have shot up. The global climate
is changing naturally without being affected by human.
Secondly, you also have been told that CO2 is responsible for the changing climate.
But how can it be? CO2 takes the proportion of about 0.054% of all the gas in the
atmosphere. People say that CO2 increases the Greenhouse effect, but CO2 takes
even the minor part of greenhouse gases. 95% of greenhouse gases is water vapor,
not CO2. Moreover, the amount CO2 produced by human activities, including cars,
planes, factories and many other sources, is much smaller than by volcanoes,
animals, plants and especially oceans, the greatest source of CO2. There is no clear
evidence telling that the CO2 leads the earth temperature. In fact, the earth
temperature controls the amount of CO2. When the ocean gets warmer, more CO2 is
released, and when the ocean gets cooler, it dissolve more CO2. In short, carbon
dioxide is not the main cause of the Global Warming.
So, if CO2 is not driving the Global Climate change, then what is? The answer is The
Sun. The Sun affects the temperature directly, as we know, by sending its heat to
the earth. But it also affects indirectly through clouds. Clouds are formed with the
help of the cosmic rays originated from far beyond our solar system. When the solar
activity is strong, few cosmic rays get through to the earth, hence less clouds are
formed. Clouds play a significant part in reflecting the solar ray to the outer space,
therefore when there are fewer clouds, the earth temperature increases. In
conclusion, it’s the sun that determines the global climate.
And that brings me to the end of my talk today. To sum up, I want to briefly run over
my main points again. The Global Climate is always changing, and it is the Sun, not
CO2 , responsible for this change. Thank you for your attention.
Key points:
The change in recent years (mid 19th century -> 1940s , the following 4
decades)
Sources of CO2
The Sun . Cosmic ray -> Clouds -> reflect solar rays. Solar activity is strong
-> less cosmic ray - > less cloud -> higher temperature
