diane
That's who's behind the lens. Well, and sometime's her assistants, too. With 10 years in wedding photography, plus a background in art, literature, illustration, and graphic design, she combines her greatest strengths with her natural sense of creativity to meticulously tailor her work to reveal not only images, places, and events, but the heart, soul, and emotion behind them. "...each couple is unique and special. Their story is different than anyone else and their wedding deserves to be documented in a way that shows what their love really is." Photographing weddings in Lawrence, Topeka, Kansas city, and throughout the region for the past decade, Diane helps S&N put together the necessary elements (creativity and experience) to make our photography full of quality, personality, and life. "Ive worked with several photographers...going by their rules, watching them take every client as 'just another paycheck'. I've watched clients and couples go ignored and taken advantage of it and it broke my heart..."
"...there isn't a 'one size ts all' when it comes to wedding photography. There's only a 'this size ts one'. I don't believe in cookie cutter photos or cookie cutter people. Its individual." She goes on to say, I still personally believe that every person really is a beautiful snowake. Cliche? Maybe. But i nd it's a good philosophy to live by."
When she doesn't have her eye to a camera or a computer screen, Diane spends most of her time coming up with other creative endeavors. She enjoys knitting, drawing, website design, and gourmet cooking, and she also works with local nonprots that provide assistance to the local community and promote education in Native American culture. (Diane is half Cherokee.) She also sings (both in the shower and out), dances, and is currently working on post-apocalyptic political novel. This winter, she'll be adding an Etsy store to her "things-to-do" list, featuring some of her creative photography, artwork, headbands, felt creatures, and knits. She's also the ofcial photographer (as well as sitting on the board) of CLM Outreach, a 501c3 nonprot organization in Topeka. ...We don't think she sleeps.
assistants
Yep. We've got'em. Typically, Diane works alone, but it always helps to have an extra pair of hands. Want a second photographer for your wedding? Just say the word and we'll bring them along. With a wide variety of backgrounds, our second shooters comes from all walks of life, with interests ranging from music to lm, pottery to programming, and fashion design to ballet. Not to mention years of photography experience, of course. We think they're all beautiful snowakes, too.
what else?
Wanna know what we do when we're not shooting weddings? We'll tell you.
what we do
Of course, were photographers (thats what we do), but we want you to know how we run our business, handle our clients, and book our events. Behind the camera, the images, and the website, what do we really do? First of all, did you notice the word documentary in our front page? (Its ok if you need to ip back to it. Trust us, its there!) We want to tell you what that means. Most people probably remember when they were young and their Aunt Tess (or someone else close to them) tied the knot. If you were the ring bearer, the ower girl, a bridesmaid, groomsmen, or, in some cases, even the guest book attendant, you probably remember Mr. Photographer lining you all up on the stairs of the church altar and shouting Everyone say cheese! Ah, now its probably coming back to you. Well, we dont do that. At all. Not even a little bit. Instead, we do documentary photography. Essentially, we capture the real moments as they happen, candidly. We wont ask you to look at the camera, and we promise we wont ask you to say cheese. We want to capture whats really there. The real tears, the real joy, and the real love, uninterrupted by us, just as it should be. What we want to capture is you. Because each couple is different with a unique story, we believe in giving special attention to every single detail of your wedding day. How do we do it? Easy. We talk to you. A lot. Every time you book a vendor, change a color theme, or buy a pair of wedding shoes, we want to know. What is your style? Tell us! We want to make sure that every image from your wedding day reects not only the events of the day, but the personalities of the people in them as well as who you are both individually and as a couple. We want to know whats special to you so that we can give you the memories that you want. When you book your wedding with Sparrow (and) Nightingale, we go over a contract with you. It isnt all just legal jargon. Our contract is specially tailored, having been reviewed and revised countless times to ensure we had it just right, so that we can ll in all the information about who you are, how you met, how he popped the question, and when youre saying I do. Why? Because the little things matter. If your proposal happened in a movie theater, guess what our suggestion will be for your engagement session. Thats right. Back to that movie theater so you can relive the moment all over again. In a nutshell, if it means a lot to you, it means a lot to us. ...And, yes. We always cry at weddings.

booking how-to
when to book
Try to book as early as possible. Somewhere between 8 and 14 months before your wedding will give you ample time to interview photographers and our schedule will be more likely to be open for your big day. Keep in mind that the earlier you book your vendors, the less stress youll be under when the wedding day arrives. Our best advice is to make your wedding photography one of the rst things you arrange. For instance, if you book with us 10 months before your wedding, we can then take that time to focus on the other aspects of your plans, such as color schemes, attire choices, and ceremony scenery to best pull together a style scheme for you. The more time we have to focus on getting to know you, the more your personality will resonate in your images! and were happy to answer questions about different sections. Youll also be able to ll in all the smallest (and largest!) details of your wedding in your contract, such as the designer and style number of your dress, whether you will be going by the ye olde something borrowed, something blue, if you want to do your bridal portraits before the ceremony, after, or on a different day, and any other particular points that mean something special to you. Our contract is perfectly constructed to give our couples the most opportunities to share even the smallest tidbits of their big day. Last, once your email has been sent, the consult has been set, the coffee has been consumed, and the contract has been signed, well have you put down your deposit to hold the day of your wedding on our calendar and choose a day for your engagement session. Congratulations, youre booked! We dont want to produce some cookie cutter images for you that look just like everyone elses wedding. We want it to more than look like you; we want it to be you. It may seem like a bit of an overkill for the photographer to have as much information about your wedding as the wedding planner themselves, but trust us. It what gives us so much pride in our work: treating our couples like people instead of paychecks, individuals instead of clients. We know how important your wedding is. Its important to us, too. So dont be surprised if we want to share your stresses, your laughter, your tears, and your joy. For us, it remains a privilege and an honor to attend each and every wedding we photograph, no matter how large or how small, and we stand by our promise to make your photography more than images, but memories that are real, raw, and intimate. In short, for giving us the honor of being a part of the biggest and most beautiful day of your life, what were trying to say is: thank you.
how to book
There are simple steps to booking with us. First, get in touch! Send us a message from our website and let us know youre interested in booking information. Be sure to include your name, your ances name, and your wedding date! Next, well set up a time with you to sit down in person for a consultation. Do you like coffee? We do! (Actually, were a bit obsessed with it.) Generally, we choose places like Aimees Cafe in Lawrence, or PTs Coffeehouse in Topeka for our over coffee consults. Dont like coffee? Well, in that case they carry juice, too. Theres always a backup plan! During the consultation, you can view examples of our work, meet Diane in person, ask any questions you want, and receive your copy of our contract. We make sure to go over each clause with you so that you understand the contract completely
what to expect
Think were going to have you sign a contract and then just wait until we have to show up at your wedding? Think again! We like to be kept up-to-date and informed on how your planning process is going. If youve decided who will be your cake artist, let us know. If youre changing the ceremony music, keep us updated. Why? Because we dont simply shoot photos for you. We want to shoot photos of you (the real you). We want to nd out who you are, what you enjoy, what makes you happy, whether you like coconut...see what we mean? We want to know because we care!
f.a.q.s
Q. What forms of payment do you take? A. We try to accommodate all of our couples by accepting various forms of payment. Right now we accept cash, check, or PayPal. (If you would like to pay with cash, we would like you to know that we do issue an immediate receipt for all cash payments.) Q. When do we have to pay? A. When you book, we require a deposit to hold your date. After the deposit, we ask that your account be paid in full no later than 2 weeks prior to your wedding day. Q. Are there payment plans available? A. You bet! We can set up a monthly payment plan for you so that you dont have to pay all at once. Your monthly payment will depend on the total of your account and how many months there are before the day of your wedding. For payment plans, well issue you monthly invoices and receipts so that you know what your current balance is at all times and when your next payment is due. Q. Are there late fees? A. We try to avoid them actually. As long as you talk with us and let us know when your payment will be in, your account is in good standing. We only charge a late fee in the most extreme of circumstances, such as 6 months with no payment and no communication. So far, we havent had any problems where a late fee was needed. Q. What are bridal portraits? A. Bridal portraits are photos taken of the bride and groom together, and normally span about 1 hour to complete. Generally, bridal portraits also include shots of the bride alone and shots of the groom alone as well. These come standard with each of our collections. Q. What does wedding party mean? A. The term wedding party refers to the groomsmen, bridesmaids, ringbearer(s), and ower girl(s) as a group.
Q. Can we request that certain shots be taken? A. Absolutely! We want you to be completely involved in your photography and let us know if there are special people, moments, or shots that you would like to capture. Seen a wedding photo online that you really want to replicate? Tell us and well get it done for you! Q. My parents are helping us pay for our wedding. Can they come to the consultation? A. We love to meet the parents! By all means, bring them along! Q. How many total images will I receive? A. We dont limit on the number of total images. Instead, we shoot continuously throughout the time we are there, then pull the absolute best images from the total amount. Your nal number of photos will depend on shooting time, your cooperation, and any extenuating circumstances. From a full day wedding (Amys Choice collection), we generally issue approximately 500 images. Q. Is my deposit an additional fee? A. No. Your deposit is based off of your account total and gures into the total amount. No extra fee is charged. Q. What should I wear for my engagements? A. Anything you want! We usually make suggestions to stay away from pure whites clothing, pure black clothing, clothing with text, or exceedingly busy patterns. Text and patterns can cause a distraction from the subject, and pure whites or blacks can be too harsh in the sun or in shadows. Q. Our wedding is out of state. destination weddings? Do you do
A. We sure do! If you would like to book a destination wedding with us, get in touch and well work with you on transportation, accommodations, and travel. Destination weddings are beautiful and unique, and we love having the opportunity to photograph them.
Still have questions? Email us from our website and well answer them for you!
