Seven Years in Tibet When Communist China invades Tibet and attacks them, over one million people were killed, over 6,000 monasteries were ruined, and some Tibetans betrayed their own people, this is what Heinrich had to go through after living in Tibet for many years. He also befriended many of the Tibetans there, including the Dalai Lama. Some of the differences between my culture and Heinrichs culture are that Buddhist monks and monasteries surrounded him, and he was always running away from P.O.W. camps or enemies. Even though Heinrich and the Tibetans may have a totally different culture than me there is one similarity, Heinrich was born in Austria but spent many years in foreign countries including Tibet. Differences and Similarities When Heinrich arrived in Tibet he saw all the monasteries and monks praying and worshiping Buddha. When he meets Dalai Lama he is blown away by the all the rules. After meeting the Dalai Lama he teaches him about things in the outside world and in return he is shown the teaching of Buddha. In contrast I am surrounded by a Christian family who teaches the Bible and want me to have a relationship with Christ. I also go to a Christian school and have a Bible class where I learn about Gods word.

Byrns 5 Another difference is that Heinrich had to always be on the lookout for enemies because they were in a war. He was once captured by the enemy and arrested and put in the P.O.W. Camp. After many tries he finally escaped with Peter Aufschnaiter. He still is in danger of being captured again so is very careful. They then travel to Lhasa and even though it is banned to foreigners, they disguise themselves and sneak in. I dont live in the time of a war so unlike Heinrich I can live without being afraid of being captured by enemies or put in a P.O.W. Camp. I can live freely and I live in a country were you have the freedom of religion and speech. A similarity between Heinrich and I is that we were both born in our home country but live in a foreign country. For Heinrich, he was born in Austria but has lived in Tibet for many years. His main purpose of going there was to climb Nanga Parbat and bring glory to his country after eleven climbers died trying to do so. He then journeys to the city of Lhasa in search for food and while there he meets many Tibetans including the Dalai Lama. I have also lived in a foreign country for many years. I was born in the United States and since then have lived in two foreign countries. Conclusion In conclusion the cultures of Heinrich and I differ greatly, but there are some similarities between them. Heinrich observed the destruction of the Tibetan culture after the Communist Chinese invaded and attacked Tibet. He also experienced the divorce with his wife and his sons refusal to communicate with him. He changed from a self-centered, lonely husband to a caring, humble friend. Even though Heinrich went through these difficulties he didnt give up in keeping Tibet and the Dalai Lama safe.
